Things are definitely slowing down... Artist : Marie Davidson Album : Working Class Woman Quick Description : Superlative electronic music. Why You Should Listen : This is the best of all worlds when it comes to techno. Overall Thoughts : Hoo boy this was really great. This may be a late entry in my best of lists (starting tomorrow), because it is the perfect mix of the weird Holly Herndon/Kelly Lee Owens vibe with more traditional beats-driven dance stuff. So, so much of this had me moving at my desk, and it feels both straightforward and complicated in ways I did not anticipate. Do not ignore this one if you’re up for a challenge or into more electronic stuff. Recommendation : It’s one of the best out there this week. An unlucky day for some, but not for those interested in some solid music from this week: Album of the Week : Artist : Boots Album : Aquaria Quick Description : Debut album from the acclaimed R&B producer. Why You Should Listen : Nothing like this has been released in some time; his resume requires at least a look. Overall Thoughts : Boots has done production most notably on songs for Beyonce, Run the Jewels, and FKA Twigs, and this is definitely more Twigs than Beyonce. It's a really weird, interesting release, equal part rap, hip-hop, and electronica that results in an album that's less about the hooks and more about the overall atmosphere. A very modern record, and one that I really enjoyed. Recommendation : Best release of the week. If you've been reading my posts here/know me at all, you know that it usually takes something interesting for me to really get into hip-hop or R&B. Thus my love of FKA Twigs, Naomi Pilgrim, and the like. Thus enters Alessia Cara, another song sent over to me that is left-of-center and fully engaging. A different song that isn't something that connects right away, I'm glad I gave this a full shot because now I can't really stop listening to it. It's a pretty interesting song, and it won't be for everyone, but it's definitely worth your time.
