Screaming Females - "Mourning Dove"

Screaming Females have their new album out tomorrow, but since we can't wait just one more day to hear it, they've released a new single from Desire Pathway. "Mourning Dove" is exactly what we want from the New Jersey trio in 2023. Sure, they've slowed down a little bit, and it's more poppy than we would have expected from the band back in 2009, but this is a band coming up on their twentieth year, so that is expected. "Mourning Dove" might sound a bit more radio friendly these days, but Screaming Females haven't lost a step or any of that edge. There is still Marissa Paternoster's biting guitar, and her solos just keep getting better and better. At a time where most of their peers are slowing down, Screaming Females are just getting better.

Marissa Paternoster says of the band's new song:

"It is seldom that any Screaming Females song is about just one thing. Mourning Dove is the only exception that I can really think of, a song about being profoundly in love while simultaneously being profoundly heartbroken."

You can watch the video for "Mourning Dove" below. Desire Pathway is due out February 17 on Don Giovanni Records, and can be pre-ordered here. For more on Screaming Females, check out the band's website.

Screaming Females - "Brass Bell"

Despite starting off with a thirty second burst of electronic noise that would make an art school band proud, Screaming Females' latest is a pure rock song. "Brass Bed" continues the New Jersey trios' path towards a more polished, less raw sound. Of course, that's a relative statement since "Brass Bed" is hardly a mainstream rock song. Although this could be Screaming Females' biggest sounding song to date. Marissa Paternoster's guitarwork is the stuff of legends, and this song might not be Screaming Females moving towards the mainstream, but forcing the mainstream to move towards them. And it's about time that happened.

Marissa Paternoster says of the new single:

"'Brass Bell' is a song about surrendering your autonomy to something so overwhelmingly powerful you willingly relinquish your ambitions and self-worth. My intention was to draw an interesting dichotomy between the muscular nature of the song and the rather bleak, worried lyrics."

You can listen to "Brass Bed" below. Desire Pathway is due out February 17 on Don Giovanni Records, and can be pre-ordered here. For more on Screaming Females, check out the band's website. Upcoming tour dates are below the song.
