Mediocre - "I Might Be Giant"

Image
Photo by Ginger Port Mediocre's latest single lives in this unexpected world between alt-pop hooks and vocals and pummeling guitars and drums. "I Might Be Giant" starts off as a kinda cute and quirky rock song that leans a little more into he world of pop music, or maybe bubblegrunge. And then the guitars and drums kick in, and this is a straight up rock song. It's filled with fuzz and distortion, while still maintaining the charm the song started out with. Instead of loud/quiet/loud, "I Might Be Giant" is more cheery/heavy/cheery. This might be a strange comparison, but I'll stick by it: This reminds me of Local H meets the more indie rock side of Mary Lou Lord. You can watch the video for "I Might Be Giant" below. Growth Eater is due out September 27 on Dangerbird Records, and is available for pre-order here . For more on Mediocre, check out the band on Instagram and Twitter .

Mediocre - "Together Together"

Image
Mediocre, the queer Boston based duo that started off in Los Angeles, just released what might be the coolest song of the year. "Together Together" is a chilled out track that reminds me of a weird hybrid of Luscious Jackson and The Moldy Peaches, but in a much more mainstream kind of way. It's a quiet song that could be fully danceable if it was just a wee bit faster, but as it is it just has that unprotected sincerity you got with The Moldy Peaches and the ultra-cool groove of Luscious Jackson. It's a song about having a crush and not being quite sure how to confess or make your move. As Mediocre puts it, it's "... a swan song for the end of the world."  You can watch the video for "Together Together" below. Know You're Screwed is out April 7 on Dangerbird Records. Mediocre - "Pop Song Baby"

Image
Photo by Ginger Port I might have such a fondness for Mediocre because they might be the only band that started out in Los Angeles and moved to Boston. The queer rock duo have released a new song, "Pop Song Baby," that is and isn't a true pop song. The new track is a bouncy and cheery rock song that dances right on the line of the two genres, but has just enough of an edge to keep it on the rock side. Although "Pop Song Baby" sounds like a track released in 2023, it's the offspring of that great period of the mid to late 90's where alternative rock started experimenting with pop, although we never would have admitted it at the time. There is a bunch of the DNA of bands like Letters to Cleo, Belly, Veruca Salt, etc. in this song. Mediocre says of their new song: “We wanted to write a song that our teenage selves would blast in our bedrooms. As femme musicians growing up in a predominantly male music scene, we pulled from our frustrations of being underest...

Mediocre - "To Know You're Screwed is to Know a Lot"

Image
Photo by Ginger Port Mediocre started out in Los Angeles but are now Boston based. The duo have a new single out, "To Know You're Screwed is to Know a Lot." The new song is this great mix of indie rock and pop. It's a fast paced and bounce filled song that might be just a wee bit too cheery to be punk, although there is more than a little punk attitude in this one. This one is reminding me a lot of a middle ground Veruca Salt that lands somewhere between their lo-fi roots and the stadium rocking songs they ended up doing. "To Know You're Screwed is to Know a Lot" is just a fun and fuzzed out indie rocker, and Mediocre could end up becoming one of your favorite Boston bands if they keep this up! You can watch the video for "To Know You're Screwed is to Know a Lot" below. To Know You're Screwed is due out April 7 on Dangerbird Recordings. The EP can be pre-ordered here .
