If It's Too Loud...

Photo by Bec Parsons We loved Genesis Owusu's album Struggler that was released back in August. Now the Ghanian-Australian artist has released "Survivor," which is meant as a bonus track for the album. "Survivor" is everything we loved about Struggler . It's high energy hip hop meets electronic music. While a lot of songs released right after an album can have the feel that they weren't quite good enough to be included on the actual record, "Survivor" will add to the album and is a standout track. It's an absolutely thrilling song that sucks you in and demands that you acknowledge it, and do some kind of movement, even if it's just bobbing along at your desk. Photo by Bec Parsons I'm not a huge dance music person, although I was in college in the late 90's, so obviously I did some dabbling then. But sometimes an artist comes around that completely defies you not to love their music no matter the genre, and Genesis Owusu is one of those. The Ghanian-Australian musician's latest single, "Tied Up!," is a pure dance track. It has a distinctly 90's feel to it, mixing mainstream dance music from that period with funk and hip hop. It's the kind of track that feels instantly familiar while also sounding completely fresh. It's like PM Dawn mixed with Madonna mixed with Parliament/Funkadelic, and is somehow even more fun than that sounds. Genesis Owusu says of his new single: “The Roach continues to run through an absurd world, trivially trying to make sense of it. Photo by Bec Parsons As much as I'm enjoying the new song from Genesis Owusu, I'm not quite sure how to describe it. The Ghanian-Australian artist has released "Leaving the Light," which is a pop song... I think? The song is as intense as it is danceable, but just calling it pop doesn't sit right with me. There are some strong elements of drum and bass here, along with some punk, hip hop, rock, and psychedelia. I hesitate to even call this song fun, because it feels like there is too strong of a darkness lurking beneath the surface to be fun, even though it sounds like the best dance song you've heard in years. "Leaving the Light" is filled with so many conflicting elements that it just has to work. You can watch the video for "Leaving the Light" below. Struggler is due out August 18 via Ourness/AWAL.
