Of all the songs we've heard from theWorst's upcoming album, "Couldn't Stay Away" sounds the most like traditional punk. On this one, the Maine trio are just straight up bringing the rock with feedback soaked pop punk guitars. Just the slightest hints of emo come through on this one. It's more like 80's Joan Jett went pop punk. "Couldn't Stay Away" has that garage rock grit blended with the sheen of pop punk. This one is a ton of fun, and if modern rock radio was still a thing in New England this one could have been a massive local hit.

For their latest single, Portland, ME trio theWorst brought in their friend Tony Bevilacqua of The Distillers. "Hurt Forever" lives in a world between genres. You're going to hear a lot of modern and contemporary punk and emo here. There is definitely the edge of punk and the heartfelt sincerity of emo, but this isn't an early 2000's Warped Tour band here. "Hurt Forever" also has the fuzz and aggression of bands that broke out in the wave of grunge and were lumped into that category despite not being grunge, like L7 or Dinosaur Jr. theWorst are making music that truly lives in between all of those sounds.
Brooke Binion says of the new song:
“When you’re manic, it’s like your brain is making decisions that you don’t agree with but you’re doing them anyway. There’s a lot of impulsivity and that feeling of knowing something is a terrible idea but suddenly you’re doing it.”

We first discovered Portland, ME's theWorst when they teamed up with Dana Colley of Morphine for a song. On their latest, they brought in another friend. This time it's Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce, Nth Power) for "Monomania." This new song isn't quite as indie punk as we're used to from the trio. Instead, it leans more towards straight up alt-rock with an oddly danceable beat. That does make sense, given that Glaspie has played drums for Beyonce in the past. But "Monomania" isn't a pop song. This is heavy alt-rock with a pop twist.

Alternative Press has called theWorst "... the glorious love child of Joan Jett & Kurt Cobain." That comparison is going to make perfect sense once you hear "Jim's Song." The new track has all the pop sensibility and punk snarl you'd hear in a Joan Jett song mixed with the grunge guitar of Nirvana. It's the kind of song that is just dripping with attitude while still having a killer pop hook. Typically we hear songs that distinctly choose to go more pop or more punk edge, but "Jim's Song" stands defiantly on the line refusing to pick a side.

Hailing from Portland, ME, theWorst have been called "... the glorious love child of Joan Jett and Kurt Cobain" by Alternative Press. I hate to just cop what another music writer said, but in the case of their newest single, it fits too perfectly not to. "Yes Regrets" is loud, guitar heavy rock with a little 80's pop sensibility thrown in. It's noisy, but not too noisy. It's driving punk rock in the way that Nirvana were punk, but with Jett's attitude and hit making abilities. Plus, it features Dana Colley of Morphine on baritone saxophone so you know they've got some serious indie cred.
