Laetitia Sadier - "Une Autre Attente"

We haven't heard any solo music from Stereolab founder and singer Laetitia Sadier, since 2016, but luckily that has changed. The indie legend just released a new single off an upcoming album, and fans will be delighted with "Une Autre Attente." Sure, the song sounds a bit like Stereolab, which is to be expected, but "Une Autre Attente" isn't just a Stereolab song minus the other members. The song leans even more heavily into the groovy 60's world that Sadier's longstanding band dabbles in, and even adds some vintage disco into the mix. If you've been a long term fan of Sterolab, or just love a groovy tune, Laetitia Sadier is definitely going to be your thing.

You can listen to "Une Autre Attente" below. Rooting for Love is due out February 23 on Drag City Records, and is available for pre-order through Bandcamp. For more on Laetitia Sadier, check out the artist on Instagram. Upcoming tour dates are below the song.

Ben Kweller Covers Adam Green

Last month we brought you the first single from the upcoming Adam Green tribute album from Sean Ono Lennon, and right now it's Ben Kweller's turn. Kweller takes on "Her Father and Her." While Green's original is a stripped down song with just his vocals and guitar, Kweller's "Her Father and Her" is a full band version heavy with piano and feedback. As you would expect, the cover is a more mainstream version of the song. Kweller adds a shocking amount of intensity to the song, which is something you don't always get with a cover. He's feeling every single line of this song, and delivers his vocals dripping with venom.

You can watch the lyric video for Ben Kweller's version of "Her Father and Her" below. Moping in Style: A Tribute to Adam Green is due out December 1 via Org Music and Capitane Records, and is available for pre-order here. For more on Adam Green, check out the artist's website.

Eight Foot Manchild - "We're Goin' Out on a High Note"

The world's first and therefore best doombrass band are back with a final single before their new EP is released on December 1st! Boston Music Awards nominees for Metal Artist of the Year Eight Foot Manchild have released "We're Goin' Out on a High Note," which could be their funkiest yet. This one is a little less metal than some of their previous songs. Instead, this one is straight up hard rock... just with a whole lot more funk. Eight Foot Manchild seem to be swinging for the fences on this one and trying to write a killer song, and they have succeeded. It feels a bit all over the place, but in a truly great way. Metal is a genre that tends to have subgenres that sound a lot like each other, but no one does it like Eight Foot Manchild.

You can listen to "We're Goin' Out on a High Note" below. Eight Foot Manchild's third EP is due out on December 1. For more on Eight Foot Manchild, check out the band on Facebook and Instagram.

Artelia Green - "Ghetto Children Funk"

Hailing from the Bay Area, Artelia Green have released a new single, "Ghetto Children Funk." Founded by author, educator, organizer, and activist Tiffani Marie, the group gets compared to artists such as Parliament Funkadelic, Lauryn Hill, and The Roots. Their latest single shows why. "Ghetto Children Funk" blends hip hop, funk, and gospel in a powerful mix. The song is a giant celebration despite being about black trauma. But, as we learned from Public Enemy and Parliament Funkadelic, sometimes the best way to reach people with your message is to make them dance. "Ghetto Children Funk" is the kind of song that will instantly grab you as long as you still have a soul.

Tiffani Marie says of her band's new single:

"’Ghetto Children Funk’ celebrates the resilience of BIPOC youth in the hood. Inspired by a youth-led participatory action research (“YPAR”) project conducted in collaboration with former California Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke-Harris, the song sheds light on stressors such as gentrification and racism, which are referred to as Adverse Childhood Experiences (“ACEs”) and can result in chronic illnesses and early mortality.”

You can watch the video for "Ghetto Children Funk" below. In No Particular Order is due out March 8 on Redtone Records. For more on Artelia Green, check out the artist's website.

House of Harm - "Two Kinds"

House of Harm have such an interesting sound that evokes late 80's/early 90's synth heavy alt-rock while still feeling like modern day music. Their latest single, "Two Kinds," is a slower song that isn't quite a ballad, but isn't quite mid-tempo either. It sort of has a Pet Shop Boys discover feedback thing going for it. It has that upbeat New Wave sound, but in a downtempo/goths trying to pretend everything is ok way. It's an oddly beautiful song that feels like when you're in a deep funk and trying desperately to pull yourself out of it. This might be what's so great about House of Harm's music. It always feels like it's living in two worlds at the same time and finding a way to bridge them both.

Lead singer Michael Rocheford says of the new song:

“The lyrics are written from a place of reflection and weakness. It’s a desperate call for things to return to the way they were, imperfections and all.”

You can watch the video for "Two Kinds" below. Playground is due out December 1 and is available for pre-order here. For more on House of Harm, check out the band's website.

Spring Summer featuring Mac McCaughan - "Holiday Dream"

Typically we get a few holiday song submissions throughout October that I hold on to until after Halloween, but I think this was the first holiday song submission for 2023. Spring Summer, the musical project of Jennifer Furches, has released "Holiday Dream" which features Mac McCaughan of Superchunk on background vocals. This new song is a lovely and quiet holiday song that has the feeling of the quiet during a snowstorm. It's a song of longing more than merriment, but there is still a positive light to "Holiday Dream." It might be the perfect song to gently ease us into the holiday season this year.

Jennifer Furches says of her new single:

“I wanted to make a song about the longing we can feel during the holidays to be with the ones you love or have loved–like a movie that ends happily ever after. There was something about it I felt Mac would connect with and make better: and he did! We have roots in the same place in North Carolina, but have both spent time in New York. There's something so special about New York during the holidays, and this song speaks to those snowy nights in the city with the one person you want to be with the most.”

You can listen to "Holiday Dream" below. For more on Spring Summer, check out the artist on Bandcamp and Instagram.

Haiku Hands - "Cool for You"

Australian alt-dance trio Haiku Hands are the perfect band if you went through a club/electronica phase in the 90's. Their latest single, "Cool for You," is going to remind you of the prime of artists like The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers. If you played this for me and told me it was an unreleased song from the Wipeout XL soundtrack, I would completely believe you. It's a high energy and fun track that is going to bring back memories from twenty-five years ago for a lot of us. As someone who doesn't get into a lot of electronic music of today, "Cool for You" is the rare modern dance song I can get behind.

Bea Lewis says of her band's new single:

“This song is about feeling yourself, being at a party and enjoying being yourself. Being with your crew and feeling everybody, it’s the antithesis of capitalism that you need to be something else, that you need another product to feel good, that you need anything. It's a statement that you’re already good. In fact you’re already awesome and mad and lit and you should be singing it from the rooftop and celebrating yourself and backing yourself and feeling yourself. It still gives me goosebumps when I listen to it even though I’ve heard it a million times. It’s liftoff baby!!!!"

You can listen to "Cool for You" below. Pleasure Beast is due out December 1 on Spinning Top Records, and is available for pre-order here. For more on Haiku Hands, check out the artist's website.

Other Brother Darryl - "Drive"

Boston's "cosmic canyon rock band" Other Brother Darryl have released a new single about making sure to tell your friends you love them, since you never quite know when you won't get the chance again. As you may know, bandmember Dave Mirabella passed away last year, so it's a message they truly mean. "Drive" doesn't sound like anything that typically comes out of Boston. It sounds more like vintage Laurel Canyon bands, but with a Northeast blue collar sensibility. I'm getting some serious Corsby, Stills, Nash & Young vibes on this one, with it's use of vocal harmonies throughout mixed with killer twangy electric guitar solos. It's a heartbreaking song, but one we should all listen to the message of.

Nate Leavitt (guitar and vocals) says of his band's new song:

“To me, the song says, ‘It’ll be okay. Keep driving, you’ll get there.’ My favorite line is, ‘If you found someone whose beats so you won’t die.’ It really spoke to me in that moment we were all together writing these songs. I realized we all have hearts that beat for each other. When you have people like that in your life, you tell them you love them. This song is a reminder of that sentiment. We made it part of our goodbyes to each other when Dave was with us and continue to do so today. We encourage you to tell someone before it’s too late. It’ll make you feel good.”

You can listen to "Drive" below. For more on Other Brother Darryl, be sure to check out the band on Instagram.

Mary Timony - "Dominoes"

It's hard to believe but it's been fifteen years since Mary Timony has released a solo album. The indie rock legend (besides her solo work, she's also been a member of Helium, Ex Hex, Autoclave, and Wild Flag) is finally back with an upcoming album and a brand new single. The album is the result of the end of a long term relationship and was recorded while Timony was caring for her ailing parents. The first single, "Dominoes," is exactly what we'd want from Timony at this point in her thirty-plus year career. It's a mixture of classic indie rock/pop with a more modern indie groove. While it's rooted in vintage Timony, "Dominoes" could easily come from a younger artist just starting out. Timony is the rare artist that can still sound vital but also like herself three decades into a career.

Mary Timony says of her new single:

“This song was almost not on the record. We needed one last song, and I found a demo of it I had forgotten about at the last minute.”

You can watch the video for "Dominoes" below. Untame the Tiger is due out February 23 on Merge Records, and is available for pre-order here. For more on Mary Timony, check out the artist's website. Upcoming tour dates are below the video.

Weakened Friends - "Awkward"

We're huge fans of Weakened Friends, and we've been writing about the Maine trio almost as long as this blog has existed. They've just released a new single, and it's no surprise it's another banger (as the kids say). Weakened Friends have edged into a slightly poppier sound than they had with their early EPs, but that's hardly a complaint when it gives us a song like "Awkward." It's a surprisingly upbeat song for Weakened Friends, but that's all relative for Weakened Friends since most songs that include the lyrics "Cuz we still have time to fuck this up" and "It's like I'm breathing underwater" would be any other band's most depressing song. "Awkward" is Weakened Friends at their most perfect, with incredibly catchy parts and killer background vocals over fuzzy guitars.

In a Bandcamp post, singer/guitarist Sonia Sturino says of the new song:

"All the songs I’ve ever written are really depressing…'Awkward' was my attempt at writing a song about something joyful. I don’t know if I really nailed it, since it’s still filled with the ol’ self doubt narrative, but I’d like to think this song is more on the positive side. Awkward really pinpoints the feeling you get when everything is just new and exciting. I wanted to dive into the feeling of having a big practically life altering crush, where you’re equal parts excited, embarrassed and terrified. As someone who identifies as queer, I think it’s important to also share the happier, more joyful experiences regarding love and relationships, it’s not always dread, doom and gloom, and 'Awkward' is a testament to that!"

You can watch the video for "Awkward" below. The song is out now via Don Giovanni Records, and is available as a download through Bandcamp. For more on Weakened Friends, check out the band's website.

Doggy Daycare - "acid walk"

After hearing Doggy Daycare's "(forgetting) sarah marshall" back in July, we said we couldn't wait to hear what they did next. The wait is officially over with the release of a second single, "acid walk." The southern shoegaze band really takes that genre to new levels with this one. The song has all the fuzz required with shoegaze, but the guitars have a distinct if odd twang to them. It's almost like if Archers of Loaf decided to switch up genres a bit. "acid walk" has a fuzzed out laid back vibe you just couldn't get anywhere else but the south. Doggy Daycare have created a new sound that is truly all theirs, and once again, we're dying to hear what comes next.

You can listen to "acid walk" below. I Love My Friends will be released via Fort Lowell Records. For more on Doggy Daycare, check out the band on Instagram and Twitter.

Sleater-Kinney - "Say It Like You Mean It"

As someone who didn't like the last two Sleater-Kinney albums but loved their single released last month ("Hell"), I was nervous to check out the second single from their upcoming album. "Hell" could have been a fluke, and I'd end up hating "Say It Like You Mean It." I'm both relieved and thrilled to say this new single is also fantastic. With "Say It Like You Mean It," Sleater-Kinney have found this new ground that isn't anything like their 90's classics but still fresh enough to keep even their most snobby middle-aged indie rock fans (aka me) happy with a thrilling new sound. The Center Won't Hold and Path of Wellness were them trying out a brand new sound, and so far Little Rope appears to be them mastering it.

Carrie Brownstein says of her band's new video, which she directed:

The video tells the story of a woman who's lost all sense of what's appropriateSick with the alienation that stems from existing in a disparate emotional state from the person or people closest to her, she grapples with debilitating loss, desires to be seen, and dares you to leave.

You can watch the video for "Say It Like You Mean It" below. Little Rope is due out January 19 on Loma Vista Recordings, and is available for pre-order here. For more on Sleater-Kinney, check out the band's website. Upcoming tour dates are below the video.

C'mon Tigre featuring Sean Kuti - "The Botanist"

Music collective C'mon Tigre has a new single out featuring Sean Kuti, son of Fela Kuti. "The Botanist" features a mixture of South American music and African jazz, but at no point does it sound like what you would think of as world music. It has elements of typical world music, but "The Botanist" sounds like something all its own. It has so many elements from so many musical styles and genres that it sounds both familiar and completely fresh. C'mon Tigre have crafted a song that sounds like an organic version of a collage of samples as the song meanders along through different musical elements. Even if you typically hate international music or jazz, you need to check this one out.

You can listen to "The Botanist" below. Habitat is due out November 24 on Intersuoni, and is available for pre-order here. For more on C'mon Tigre, check out the artist's website.

Laura Jane Grace - "Hole in My Head"

Laura Jane Grace's solo work tends to be a little more rootsy than her work with Against Me!, but with "Hole in My Head" Grace leans into her punk roots. Sure, the new solo song would be the poppiest song on virtually any Against Me! album, and it's much more fun sounding than she normally gets, but this is still a punk song. It's a less than two minute burst of a song that is sure to get you pogoing like mad. On Twitter, Grace called "Hole in My Head" one of the best songs she'll ever write, and she's certainly not wrong. This has that perfect mixture of a catchy pop song with punk attitude that the Ramones built an entire career on.

You can watch the video for "Hole in My Head" below. Hole in My Head, the album, is due out February 16, and is available for pre-order here. For more on Laura Jane Grace, check out the artist's website. Upcoming tour dates are below the video.

First Listen: New Releases for 3 November 2023

Artist: Laura Veirs
Album: Phone Orphans
Quick Thoughts: Laura Veirs has been a favorite of mine since Carbon Glacier, and I've always enjoyed her back catalog, from the more roots and folk-style early stuff to the more disjointed folk music that felt a decade before it was cool. Phone Orphans isn't exactly a return to the old, but it is a return to a quieter, more deliberate sound than what we're used to, and it is gorgeous. Each song feels fragile and immediate in all the best ways, and it's a favorite of the week. Make some time for this.
Songs of Note: "If You Could Hold Someone," "The Archers," "Beautiful Dreams," "Swan Dive"

Artist: Little Lizard
Album: Big Lizard
Quick Thoughts: I didn't know what to make of Little Lizard when I saw the cover, didn't know what to make of the band in the first song, and I still don't know what to make of it now. This is a compliment, because it is a real thinker of a record. It's mostly instrumental, a sort of indie-jazz pastiche of sorts that always kept me guessing, and is an album I literally can't stop thinking about. It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but it's absolutely mine.
Songs of Note: "Lakers," "Six," "SF," "Ripper"

Artist: We Melt Chocolate
Album: Holy Gaze
Quick Thoughts: We Melt Chocolate is likely melting it via some better-than-most shoegaze riffs, because this album just rocks. It's a great, fuzzy listen in a fall that feels full of them, and sets itself apart due to the strong, sharp songwriting that works as a foundation for the guitars drenching track after track. Give this a listen.
Songs of Note: "Holy Ramen," "No Meaning Man," "Sunrise," "Shades"

Artist: Crystal Canyon
Album: Stars and Distant Light
Quick Thoughts: Speaking of shoegaze, Crystal Canyon is an act out of Portland, ME, that sounds great and isn't giving an indie vibe at all. This album, apparently their third, shows some real solid musicality across a tracklisting full of cosmic songs, and I fell hard for their brand of fuzzed-out rock. More like stargaze, am I right?
Songs of Note: "Dreamray," "Belt of Orion," "Pulsars and Magnetars," "Catatonia," "Cobra Aurora"

Artist: Lol Tolhurst, Budgie, and Jacknife Lee
Album: Los Angeles
Quick Thoughts: Has the idea of a supergroup died? I don't know, but a group led by members of The Cure, Siouxie and the Banshees, and a top producer is a supergroup in my mind. This is a very percussion-forward effort, reminscent more of UNKLE than anything the individual acts worked with, but the guest spots from James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse turn this into more of a party than I expected. This is a fascinating listen on many levels, and worth a spot in your rotation.
Songs of Note: "Ghosted at Home," "Los Angeles," "Everything and Nothing," "Travel Channel," "Country of the Blind," "We Got to Move"

Artist: Tkay Maidza
Album: Sweet Justice
Quick Thoughts: Tkay Maidza is amazing, and even though she has a million monthly listeners on Spotify I feel like she's still rap's best kept secret. After a series of EPs that largely stayed within the lines, Sweet Justice> feels more like a statement than a song collection, with equal parts FKA Twigs and current female rap stars like Megan Thee Stallion and Doja Cat. This is a great, great record and one I'm glad I hear this week.
Songs of Note: "WUACV," "WASP," "Ring-a-Ling," "Gone to the West"

Artist: Caitlin Harnett & the Pony Boys
Album: All Night Long
Quick Thoughts: This was one we missed earlier this year, and I regret it. This is your classic alt-country smoky bar music, with some great honest songs and a vibe that's all its own. I loved "Can't Have It All" in particular, which kind of blew my socks off in its unexpected raw beauty. Find some time for it.
Songs of Note: "Sidelines," "Can't Have It All," "Even Cowgirls Cry"
