The duo's latest single, "Middle of Your Mess," combines modern folk with alt-pop. The song reminds me of First Aid Kit meets Lucy Dacus. It's a lush and melodic song that swirls around the listener in an embrace that might not be warm. As lovely as the song is, there's a strong sense of anxiety and trouble within the song, which comes through for the listener. "Middle of Your Mess" is a compelling listen, with the sisters' voices laying out all of the emotion of the song.

Charm of Finches say of their new single:

“’Middle of Your Mess’ is a tongue-in-cheek bop on when sometimes women like to blame other women for their own internal issues when it comes to relationships. At the time of writing this one, we were listening a lot to Nora Jones’ album ‘Little Broken Hearts’ and we think some of her brazen brutal honesty was an influence on this song.”

You can watch the "Wes Anderson meets Heathers" video for "Middle of Your Mess" below. Marlinchen in the Snow is due out April 19 on Spunk Records. The band's latest single, "All About You," borrows from four decades of power pop. It has elements of 60's and 70's power pop, especially with its sugary melodies. Some of the guitarwork in the song has a very distinct 80's sound, like Tommy Tutone or The Knack. It's all put together in a way that's reminding me a lot of 90's era power pop, in particular Fountains of Wayne. The Jellybricks are just fun power pop with a little of the edge of garage rock, which is what you truly want with the genre.

You can listen to "All About You" below. The project's latest single, "Embarrassed Dog," is a mostly electronic track that also blends elements of hip hop and indie rock. It reminds me a little of late 90's electronic artists that would create a sound collage out of existing elements, but "Embarrassed Dog" also has a much more organic feel to it. It also sounds like Lavers created a bunch of different pieces for different songs, and then decided to mash them all together to create "Embarrassed Dog." And somehow made it all work into a cohesive piece of music.

You can watch the video for "Embarrassed Dog" below. Your Day Will Come is due out April 19 on Jagjaguar, and is available for pre-order here. "The Runaround" fits the stoner-punx label perfectly. It has the edge, speed, and heaviness of punk rock, but with a little bit of laid back stoner charm. It's a fuzzed out punk rock song that comes charging at you full speed, but in a warm and cheery way. It has a lot of the style of proto-punk that you would get from The Stooges, but through a mid-90's post-grunge filter. As hard as the song it, there's an unmistakable groove flowing throughout, as well as a sense of pop hooks. It's a good reminder that sometimes punk rock can be fun while still delivering a message.

Zip-Tie Handcuffs say of their latest single:

"This song is about society's attachment to social media, and how so many people project a completely false personality online. Feeding off of the digital validation of 'likes' and 'shares' as opposed to existing with other people face to face, no filters and no edits. Humans aren’t perfect, and to me that is what makes us each so interesting. I can appreciate certain merits of social media, and connecting with the world in a few clicks, but sometimes it can be hard to see the line between fabrication and the truth. Earlier this week the Venezuelan post-rock band announced they were releasing a cover of Radiohead's "The National Anthem," and my anticipation immediately started building. I was curious as to how a hardcore version of a Radiohead classic would sound. Instead, Zeta's version is much more faithful to the original than I expected. It's a lot heavier, but it's not as far off from Radiohead than I assumed. It's also a lot funkier than the original, but that was too be expected. "Rattlesnake" is based in traditional folk, but it also sounds completely modern. The track sounds like it has a looping element, and Lapell's electric guitar sounds completely modern. The guitar might be the secret weapon of the song, as it has a modern quality that is somehow haunting. The way the guitar mixes with Lapell's vocals creates this element that is oddly comforting while still clashing a bit. It's like the modern and the past are being forced to find a common ground, and while they are, it's not entirely comfortable.

Abigail Lapell says of her latest single:

“Rattlesnake is an ode to love and superstition. The trad-inspired track combines powerhouse vocals and slightly distorted finger-style electric guitar. The serpentine melody unspools around a catchy refrain, doubling vocal lines about archaic love omens and herbalist incantations to timeless yet modern effect."

You can watch the video for "Rattlesnake" below. Anniversary is due out May 10 on Outside Music, and is available for pre-order here. Their latest single, "Eclipse," was written around the time of the 2023 lunar eclipse. It definitely fits being compared to 90's grunge, although the song is a bit more straightforward rock than that description might imply. It's more along the lines of a band like L7 meets The Donnas, and it includes a killer hardcore-esque breakdown. The song just charges straight through you and Pythies are barely able to control the ferocity. But, like with the best of grunge, there is a surprising amount of melody for such a fast and heavy song.

You can watch the video for "Eclipse" below. Grand Puba joins the duo on "Think Twice," and if you love early 90's hip hop, this song will be a true delight. Besides just being a great solo artist, Grand Puba was a member of Brand Nubian, and "Think Twice" has that early 90's alternative hip hop sound. This legitimately sounds like a forgotten song from a hip hop heavy soundtrack from my high school days, so I'm in old school heaven on this track.

Saigon says of his latest single:

“Growing up, Brand Nubian was one of my favorite groups, and Grand Puba as a solo artist shaped and molded my fashion sense at that time, and he is my favorite artist of all time. Grand Puba has never gotten his due respect. Before Kanye, it was Puba who made the rugby with the knapsack look cool. He also always made sure there was some kind of a positive message in his music. While making this song, I tried to channel Grand Puba Maxwell from Masters Of The Ceremony (his first group), with the Puba from his Reel to Reel album, and I came up with 'Think Twice.' "Hammer" is one of those songs that is too pop for rock and too rock for pop. I think it might lean a little more into pop than rock, but just slightly. It starts off more as a singer-songwriter track with an acoustic guitar opening, and then Vu's vocals come in with some of the best slacker rock intonations of this century. Eventually the song fills out with more instruments which give it that pop and/or rock sound. Hana Vu is quickly becoming a favorite here, and we can't wait to hear more in the near future.

Hana Vu says of her writing process:

“I do plead with the world, or the universe, in writing. My writing of songs is where I feel inclined to ask questions and look for answers within myself. ‘Hammer’ is one of the first songs I wrote for this record. It’s one of those songs you write to yourself amidst existential crisis. Maybe that’s what all songs are.”

You can watch the video for "Hammer" below. Romanticism is due out May 3 on Ghostly International, and is available for pre-order here. Led by singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer Fabi Reyna, the artist's latest single is "Conexión Ancestral." Reyna's music combines Congolese, Peruvian, and Columbian rhythms into modern dance music. It's the kind of sound that will appeal to anyone that had an electronica phase in the 90's (which is probably where I come in) without being a throwback. It's the kind of music that borrows from the past and adapts multiple sounds to create something new, yet oddly comforting. Just to show how unique Reyna Tropical is as an artist, she's playing the Newport Folk Festival this year, which may be a first for a dance artist.

Reyna Tropical says of her latest single:

"'Conexión Ancestral' is about starting the journey towards being in relationship with another part of my raíces. "Gold" was a little more folk meets alt-pop, and "Nobody's Watching" had more of an indie rock sound. The third song from the Maine based artist is more of a straightforward singer-songwriter track. There is still some of the alt-pop catchiness in "Cigarette" and some of the indie rock noise, but for the most part the song sticks to a singer-songwriter base. It's the slight flourishes into other genres that keep Stancioff's song interesting, which is what we're coming to enjoy about her music.

Louisa Stancioff says of her latest single:

“Zack [Leavitt] set up a drum machine, a dreamy synth loop, and we both started playing guitar. "ID'd at Aldi" is a punk rager with heavy guitars and pop hooks about the bizarre joy you get when someone tells you that you don't look your age. It's the kind of punk song that has an anger and edge, but also a sense of joy. "ID'd at Aldi" is a ridiculously fun song that also makes a strong point about aging in a fuzzed out, noisy punk song about being asked for your ID. Sonically, it's kind of a mix of L7 and that dog. Plus, it's always great to hear punk rock that doesn't make you feel ancient, as much of the punk rock that the kids are making does.

Kerry Devine says of the band's new single:

“getting ID'd - last time it happened to me was at Aldi, my response was to take it as a compliment - but then as I walked out I thought to myself, how weird is that? What's wrong with looking your age?! What is this obsession about looking younger, especially for women, as a man you can be a craggy faced 'silver fox' but what is it about women where our currency is directly linked to youth. The song is about us questioning our response and what that says in turn about women older than us."

You can watch the video for "ID'd at Aldi" below. Chaos is due out April 19 on Trapped Animal, Green Island Music, and Big Romantic Records. He has gained fame through Instagram videos of himself playing songs from the 80's and 90's on pedal steel guitar, and now has an official EP coming out. His new single is a cover of Joy Division's iconic "Love Will Tear Us Apart." I never would have expected to hear a cover of a Joy Division classic done on pedal steel, but Pedal Steel Noah just crushes it. This could easily have come across as a novelty cover, but this is one of the better covers of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" I've ever heard. Tom Hanks announced he tested positive for COVID. The NBA and NHL cancelled their seasons. Travel to Europe was banned. All of that happened while I was at an Against Me! show in Holyoke, which led me to abandon my spot near the front of the stage to the very back corner of the venue to get as far away from everyone as possible. It was obviously a bad experience, and I've wanted a do-over ever since. Sunday night, I finally got my chance when Laura Jane Grace played the Crystal Ballroom in Somerville.

Playing as the newly christened Laura Jane Grace & the Mississippi Medicals, this is going to be a hard show to write about as it's going to be impossible to not overly gush about it to an embarrassing amount. Joined by drummer Mikey Erg and bassist Matt Patton, the trio took the stage with some of the most tremendous energy I've ever seen. Based on some of Grace's solo releases, I wasn't sure what we were going to get, but this was a full on punk rock show. Early on in the set, Grace declared that they were playing the same setlist that they did in New York City the night before to prove it wasn't the songs but the audience. I'm fully aware that "You're a much better crowd than last night" is a rock and roll cliche, and Boston particularly eats that up when the other city is New York, but considering Grace isn't known as a bullshit artist and how enthusiastic the crowd in Somerville was, we believed her.

And what a show it was. Grace was joined by Ezra Furman for "Punk Rock in Basements" and "Pints of Guinness Make You Strong," and Grace's wife Paris Campbell on vocals for most of the set. The band played nine Against Me! songs and ten of the eleven songs on the recently released Hole In My Head. It's rare for an audience and a performer to match energy as perfectly as they did Sunday night, but the energy just kept building with every song. I'm a huge fan of watching Matt Patton perform since no one is happier on stage than he is, and that was on full display in Somerville. Getting to sing the "Pig pig pig/Pig pig pig" from "I'm Not a Cop" seemed to bring him a particular delight.

For the encore, Grace planned it as a slow burn, starting off playing "Dysphoria Hoodie" solo, and closing with the epic Against Me! song 'Black Me Out." At one point in the show, Grace offered to put anyone who wanted to go to their Wednesday show in Virginia Beach on the guest list and pay for their hotel if they promised to dance and jump around as much as they were at this show, and I'm still seriously debating bailing on my life for a couple of days to take her up on that offer.

Thelma & The Sleaze played second, and I was curious how they would do with both Grace's crowd and not playing in a dive. Their opening song, "Good Girls," seemed to confuse the audience who didn't know what to think of this cowboy hat wearing band playing a bewildering mix of punk, metal, country, and power pop. When singer Lauren "LG" Gilbert announced the second song was about her two favorite things: pussy and cars, it clicked with the audience who got fully into the rest of the set. From them on, we were all locked in for songs about not stabbing people with a broken lamp, butts, and "sucking and fucking." I thought that there was no way they'd be able to beat their show at O'Brien's back in July, but Thelma & The Sleaze are the rare band who work better in front of a larger crowd.

Dikembe opened up the night with a version of earnest punk rock. The Gainesville band were a solid choice who set the tone for the evening. I'm unsure of how much of the audience knew them before that night, but they were fully invested in the band right from the start. They gushed about how much fun they were having on tour and how great everyone on the tour was, and I fully believe them. Don't be surprised to see some versions of this exact tour down the road. Some combinations are just magic, and that was proven Sunday night.
Kenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04565688219125654986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8135772162582789469.post-66631154578389451922024-03-12T10:00:00.001-04:002024-03-12T10:00:00.289-04:00Mei Semones - "Tegami"

Brooklyn's Mei Semones just released a new single that is a glorious mash-up of multiple different styles. "Tegami" is based in jazz and bossa nova, but there are also strong elements of indie rock and melodic pop music. At times the song will sound like pure jazz, and others more like an artist like Stereolab. And then there's the time the guitars kick in and "Tegami" rocks much harder than expected. Despite all the different sounds and styles, at no point does the song sound like a trainwreck. Everything flows together and all the elements weave in and out of each other expertly. Mei Semones has truly crafted a brilliant and entertaining song just begging for multiple listens.

Mei Semones explains her new single:

“‘Tegami’ was my first time experimenting with Bossa Nova style music in odd meters. It's a love song. My partner likes to write me letters, but I'm not very good at writing letters back. So instead I wrote this song, hence the name of the song ‘Tegami’ which means ‘letter’ in Japanese. I think the range of style is really noticeable in this song, and it's one of our more ambitious string arrangements with lots of intricate lines & textures.”

You can listen to "Tegami" below. Kabutomushi is due out April 5 on Bayonet Records, and is available for pre-order through Bandcamp. To keep me listening, make it as good as Magana's latest release. "Break Free" is a little more rock based than the synth heavy "Girl In Chains," but there is still plenty of synth goodness in this new song. "Break Free" is a hypnotic track driven by Jeni Magaña's entrancing vocals, and a swirling guitar solo. Quick Thoughts: I'm like a lot of people where I got on board with Q thanks to "Druggys WitH Hoes Again" and "Hands on the Wheel," and his latest is still high quality and cements him as one of the more underrated rappers currently working. Lots of great tracks here, and one of the better rap albums of the year thus far.
Quick Thoughts: Faye Webster has a delivery that always catches me off-guard. Her voice floats above the music, which gives a timeless quality to her sound that's missing from even some of the best retro acts. "He Loves Me Yeah!" is an earworm and a half, and the title track is a real highlight, but there's a ton of great stuff in here in a busy week. Check it out.
Quick Thoughts: Woody Woodworth is a new artist to me, and this is a pure Americana record across the board. Sometimes, like with "Bastards" and "Flag on the Highway," you get some real Jason Isbell vibes, and other songs feel much more like classic country, up to and including the version of "In the Pines." A great listen, especially for fans of the more rootsy stuff.
Quick Thoughts: This is a loud, abrasive, and addictive record. Bricklayer is a sort of thrashy, sort of dance-punky band out of Boston that definitely has a favorite from this week. "Cig Race" and "Gay Breakfast" are both solid tracks, and this is the sort of album that could break big. Check it out.
Songs of Note: "Cig Race," "Bloodsucker," "Detach," "Sticky Fingers," "Gay Breakfast"

Quick Thoughts: I loved Yard Act's last album, an impressive slice of polished indie rock. Somehow, Where's My Utopia improves on the concept with some great hooks and a leveled-up sound. "We Make Hits" indeed.
Songs of Note: "We Make Hits," "When the Laughter Stops"

Quick Thoughts: On the Oasis conflict, I'm still Team Noel, but I have a grudging acceptance that Liam Gallagher has a strong frontman charisma that makes efforts like this, with John Squire of The Stone Roses, that much more appealing. More, the album feels like it could go off the rails at times, but ultimately stays on course in a way that feels more rollicking than risky. I really enjoyed this listen on a whole, worth checking out.
Songs of Note: "Raise Your Hands," "Mars to Liverpool," "One Day at a Time," "Make It Up As You Go Along," "You're Not the Only One," "Mother Nature's Song"

Album: Stranger
Quick Thoughts: This EP was *very* anticipated for me, as I became addicted to "Drivin'" during the pandemic. The full record, launched after a bad major label deal and an indie bet on herself, is rootsy and mature beyond its years, with song after song after song that just put the work in. Whether barroom singalongs or hook-laden radio-friendly singles, there's something here that's worth hearing. Absolutely a stellar release this week.
I only recently discovered them thanks to Jeff, and they were always one of those bands that I just had to accept the fact that I missed out on. But, somehow the band reunited in 2014. So when a show at The Sinclair in Cambridge was announced for last Friday, I jumped at the chance to go despite feeling like an imposter fan.

And what a show it was. I doubt there were any casual Mclusky fans at the show on Friday night, but if there were they are now diehards. Opening with "Fuck this Band" (which is literally the perfect choice, both because it's hilarious and helped ease the crowd into the show before the explosion of "Dethink to Survive"), Mclusky instantly had the crowd enraptured by their show. Quite often reunion shows can be very obvious cash grabs, with the band having no real interest in playing the material. That's not the case with Mclusky, who just attacked these old songs with an energy that defied their middle-age. It was also the rowdiest show I've seen in years. There wasn't any hardcore 90's style moshing, but there was pushing and jumping around for the entire hour plus set.

Plus, Andrew Falcous has legitimately great stage banter. From encouraging the crowd to start texting their friends during a new song to some bizarre exchange with an audience member who needed to discuss the penis size of inhabitants of a certain Irish town, each music break was entertaining.

Mclusky also have such a great catalog of songs for a band that wasn't around for a huge amount of time. There's the obvious "Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues," but each song just obliterated the crowd. "Without MSG I Am Nothing?" "Collagen Rock?" "Day of the Deadringers?" All amazing. When they announced they only had two songs left, the audience asked for a third. They obliged, but had to abort the audience's pick of "No Covers" in favor of "That Man Will Not Hang" after they messed up. Even that made the night even more spectacular.

Minibeast opened up. They're the new band of Peter Prescott, formerly of Mission of Burma. They rely heavily on the use of loops to craft these mind-blowing and heavy indie rock songs. I'm going to assume most of the crowd was unfamiliar with Minibeast before Friday night, but they won over plenty of fans with a high energy and impossible to ignore set. Plus, Keith Seidel is by far one of the best drummers I have ever seen live. This is the third time I've seen Minibeast live, and each show is both similar and wildly different from others due to improvisation. And each show has been better than the previous one.

Martha's Vineyard Ferries played second, and had the unenviable job of playing after the bonkers energy of Minibeast and before the beloved Mclusky. Featuring Boston rock legend Chris Brokaw on drums and vocals, the band played a more laid back set of indie rock songs. They may have been punk rock laced indie rock songs, but still more chill than the other bands. Luckily for the Ferries, they play amazing songs that kept the crowd entertained and didn't burn anyone out before Mclusky started.

Friday night was a night of legends, and all three delivered.
Kenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04565688219125654986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8135772162582789469.post-20159542376933651242024-03-11T11:00:00.001-04:002024-03-11T11:00:00.142-04:00Empanadas Ilegales - "Tobogan"

Vancouver cumbia psych-rockers Empanadas Ilegales just released a new single off their upcoming album, and if you liked "La Danza Del Vampiro,' you're going to love "Tobogan." This new song is a cover of Los Benfords' "El Tobogan," which was the first salsa song Empanadas Ilegales learned to play. They've added psych-rock elements to make the song sound more like themselves, and the results are infectious. It's a fusion of psychedelic music, salsa, and jazz. It's a smooth and trippy sound that demands the listener dance in some form. If you can sit through all of "Tobogan" and fight the urge to move even a little, you might not have a soul.

Guitarist and vocalist Ricardo Perez says of his band's latest single:

“We go and go and go, and then we blow your mind.”

You can watch the video for "Tobogan" below. Creepy Mambo: Rooftop Sessions is due out April 12 on We Are Time Records, and is available for pre-order here. But sometimes an artist just nails the mainstream thing so well, even the snobbiest of music fans can't help but to praise them. That's how it has been with Jon Muq's singles, and his latest is no exception. "One You Love" is a piano based pop-rock song that could easily end up getting played on Adult Contemporary radio, but you'll still love it since it's just so good. The Ugandan born, current Austin, TX resident Muq can take a song as mainstream and pop leaning as "One You Love" and inject enough of his soul into it to make it irresistible. Sure, it's pop-rock, but there's plenty of soul in the song and just enough of an Afrobeat element to keep things interesting. This is just top tier songwriting.

You can watch the video for "One You Love" below. Flying Away, Jon Muq's Dan Auerbach produced debut album, is due out May 31 on Easy Eye Sound, and is available for pre-order here. Since I discovered Glixen earlier this year, I've been swept up in adoration for the Arizona shoegaze band, and wondered if they'd make it all the way up to New England for a show. Once I saw they were touring with Glitterer, I knew I had to check them out at Crystal Ballroom. Plus, local phenoms Gollylagging were slated to open, and I've been meaning to check them out for a while.

Gollylagging

Gollylagging opened the show with a short burst of a set. I've been hearing about how great they are live, and they did not disappoint. They played a high energy variety of indie rock with a slightly aggressive edge. It was loud, and noisy, and set the tone for the evening perfectly. They definitely had fans in attendance and won over those of us not familiar with them. They even inspired a short mosh pit at one point. It was the kind of local support set that challenges the national touring bands to step it up a bit.

Glixen

Glixen came up next with their blend of shoegaze. They play a much more aggressive version of the chilled out genre, and live that is just amped up even more. This is mostly due to drummer Keire Johnson, who plays like he's in a hardcore band. I had unreasonably high expectations for Glixen, and those were far exceeded. For a young band, they melted everyone's face off as soon as they started playing, and just got better and better as their set went on. I heard a few people in the audience mention that they couldn't hear singer/guitarist Aislinn Ritchie's vocals well, but vocals can easily get swept away with shoegaze. Their set was simply astounding, and my only complaint is that five or six songs was not nearly enough.

Glitterer

Glitterer is the band I was least familiar with, and they were the band most people were there to see. They have a very dedicated fanbase, many of whom were wearing Glitterer shirts to the show. Seeing that they're from D.C. makes perfect sense with their sound, which was an earnest version of alt-rock edging into pop punk at times. They played a fast set of catchy rock songs perfect for pumping your fist to. If you see them live, you'll understand why their fanbase is as dedicated as they are. Just a solid rock band that almost forces you to like them.
Kenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04565688219125654986noreply@blogger.com0
