The Breeders with J Mascis - "Divine Mascis"

Way back in June I first discovered there was a version of The Breeders' "Divine Hammer" featuring J Mascis, and I desperately wanted to hear it. I assumed I'd have to wait until Last Splash (30th Anniversary Original Analog Edition to be released on September 22, but The Breeders decided to release it a couple of days early! "Divine Mascis" features Mascis on guitar and lead vocals for this version of "Divine Hammer," and the song is basically reworked around him. It sounds more dreamy and pop than the original, and less Dinosaur Jr than I ever would have expected. The bass also seems to kick a little harder on "Divine Mascis," which is fairly unexpected. It's a fun re-imagining of an iconic song from the 90's and makes me wonder what could have been if this ended up on Last Splash.

Kelley Deal says of the newly released song:

At the time, J Mascis was a guitar god… we sent him the tape to put guitar on, so when it came back and he’s got rid of our voices and just put his vocal on, we were like, ‘Wha?!’ But it’s really cute. There’s a freshness to it, and it’s just so weird. I like his voice and the idiosyncratic way he sings and delivers lines. So I thought it was really neat.

You can watch the video for "Divine Mascis" below. Last Splash (30th Anniversary Original Analog Edition) will be out September 22 on 4AD, and is available for pre-order here. For more on The Breeders, check out the band's website. Upcoming tour dates are below the video.

Big Thief - "Born for Loving You"

There are a lot of bands doing the indie rock meets Americana thing these days, but no one nails it quite like Big Thief. The band just released a new single that is the pinnacle of the genre. "Born for Loving You" is a cheery and breezy song that lands right in between indie rock and folk. Buck Meek's trademark guitar gives the song the perfect level of fuzzy twang, and the song is perfect for both holding onto the last days of summer and welcoming fall. The song just sounds like a hug can feel, and if you can't get into "Born for Loving You," you may need to check to see if you have a soul.

You can listen to "Born for Loving You" below. The song will be the B-side to the "Vampire Empire" 7" due out on October 20 via 4AD, and is available for pre-order here. For more on Big Thief, check out the artist's website.

Buck Meek - "Paradise"

Despite making relatively traditional music, Buck Meek truly has his own sound. Despite the Big Thief guitarist's distinctive voice and vocal style, even the playing on his latest single, "Paradise," has it's own specific sound. The new single is almost painfully slow and oddly hypnotic. Meek's vocals seem to go on at their own pace, speeding up and slowing down as the mood changes, with instrumentation that's almost too sparse. "Paradise" is the kind of song that shouldn't work, and couldn't with any other artist. Buck Meek has almost created his very own genre of folk.

Buck Meek says of his latest single:

“Sometimes when you half-hear something spoken, something unspoken inside the words is revealed. Your mind fills in the blank, finishes the sentence, infers deep meaning - though you still can’t fully explain it. Jolie Holland sent me some of the lyrics for this song, about feeling in awe of the vastness within a loved one, and I wrote it thinking about how love often feels too big to comprehend, like death, or life after death, or space.”

You can listen to "Paradise" below. Haunted Mountain is due out August 25 on 4AD, and is available for pre-order here. For more on Buck Meek, check out the artist's website. Upcoming tour dates are below the song.

The Breeders - "Go Man Go"

Logically, I know that The Breeders' classic album Last Splash came out in 1993, and that 1993 was thirty years ago... but it still hurts. To help ease all of our pain and to celebrate the album's thirtieth anniversary, The Breeders are set to release an anniversary edition of Last Splash on two 45rpm vinyl records, plus a 12" disc with two lost tracks from the original sessions: "Go Man Go," which was co-written by Black Francis and "Divine Mascis," which is a version of "Divine Hammer" with lead vocals by J Mascis. We can listen to "Go Man Go" now, and it sounds like exactly what it is: A vintage Breeders track co-written by Black Francis. It sounds like something we've all heard hundreds if not thousands of times before, but that's only due to our love of The Breeders and Pixies. "Go Man Go" is a treat for fans, and we're going to cherish these new songs.

You can watch the video for "Go Man Go" below. Last Splash (30th Anniversary Edition) is due out September 22 on 4AD, and is available for pre-order here. For more on The Breeders, check out the band's website. Upcoming tour dates are below the video which will feature Last Splash performed in its entirety!

Buck Meek - "Haunted Mountain"

Aside from being the guitarist in Big Thief, Buck Meek has been quite the established solo artist. His 2021 album Two Saviors was a favorite of mine, and now he's back with new music. "Haunted Mountain," co-written with Jolie Holland, is a ramblin' style country song. It has just the slightest hints of indie rock, but other than that this is just a straight up country/Americana track. It's an upbeat song that just has a timeless quality. It feels like it could have been released any time in the last fifty to sixty years. In fact, the occasional indie rock guitar has some roots in Neil Young, which adds more to the timeless quality.

Buck Meek says of his new song:

“It’s about being humbled by the thing you’re drawing power from only at which point an actual, fair relationship begins."

You can watch the video for "Haunted Mountain" below. The album Haunted Mountain is due out August 25 on 4AD, and is available for pre-order here. For more on Buck Meek, check out the artist's website. Upcoming tour dates are below the video.

Dry Cleaning - "Gary Ashby"

London's Dry Cleaning continue their crusade to become your favorite post punk/jangle pop band with their latest single. "Gary Ashby" combines the downbeat sound of Gang of Four with the more shoegaze and dream pop sounds of bands like Lush and Belly. The resulting sound gives "Gary Ashby" a hypnotically foreboding quality. It's also the greatest post punk song ever about a missing tortoise. Dry Cleaning explains that the song is ... a lament about a pet tortoise, escaped as a result of family chaos. We wrote it in December 2020, one of the first new songs after the New Long Leg session.”

You can listen to "Gary Ashby" below. Stumpwork is due out October 21 on 4AD, and can be pre-ordered here. For more on Dry Cleaning, check out the band on Facebook and Instagram. Upcoming tour dates are below the song.

Dry Cleaning - "Anna Calls from the Arctic"

It's truly promising when a young band changes up their sound between albums while keeping it sounding like them. The latest single from Dry Cleaning sounds like Dry Cleaning, but changes it up just enough to keep it interesting. "Anna Calls from the Arctic" still has that spoken word/Velvet Underground meets noise rock feel to it, but the noise is restrained a bit. The new song has a 1960's groove to it with a retro cool feel. It's oddly hypnotic in a vaguely threatening way. What's truly interesting with "Anna Calls from the Arctic" is that it's a relatively laid back song but one of the most intense ones Dry Cleaning have ever released.

The band says of their new single:

“The lyrics were partly inspired by phone calls with a friend who was living and working in the Arctic. The song developed from a keyboard, bass and clarinet jam. This then took shape during our pre-recording sessions with John Parish and Joe Jones in Bristol and finalized at Rockfield studios a month later, with some musical inspiration coming from the dramatic scores of John Barry. The song is observational and sensual.”

You can watch the video for "Anna Calls from the Arctic" below. Stumpwork is due out October 21 on 4AD, and can be pre-ordered here. For more on Dry Cleaning, check out the band's Facebook and Instagram. Upcoming tour dates are below the video.

Dry Cleaning - "Don't Press Me"

We were big fans of Dry Cleaning's New Long Leg last year. It was a post-rock masterpiece with spoken word over Sonic Youth and Velvet Underground style riffs that worked for us. Now the London band is back with a new single and a new upcoming album. "Don't Press Me" almost feels like Dry Cleaning decided to try to write a big mainstream hit in the vein of Wet Leg and failed spectacularly. First, there is some actual singing on "Don't Press Me." Plus, the song a certain groovy quality that is almost poppy and almost dance-friendly. But, this is still Dry Cleaning so it's the most oddball way of trying to make that kind of song possible. As always with these folks it won't be for everyone, but I think we all kind of like it that way.

You can watch the video for "Don't Press Me" below. Stumpwork is due out October 21 via 4AD, and can be pre-ordered/pre-saved here. For more on Dry Cleaning, check out the band's Facebook and Instagram. Upcoming tour dates are below the video.

Dry Cleaning - "Bug Eggs"

Dry Cleaning are one of the more interesting rock acts to get some mainstream attention recently. Despite releasing New Long Legs earlier this year, the band is back with a new single. (Although these two songs were previously available on the Japanese version of New Long Legs.) "Bug Eggs" gives us exactly what we want from Dry Cleaning. It's dark, foreboding indie rock (like the mellower side of Sonic Youth) with Florence Shaw's spoken, Velvet Underground-esque vocals. According to Shaw, "'Bug Eggs' is about the confidence that comes with age, fragility, and sexual desire."

You can listen to "Bug Eggs" below. The song is available as a single via 4AD with the b-side of "Tony Speaks!" You can get your copy via Bandcamp. For more on Dry CLeaning, check out the band's website. Upcoming tour dates are below the song.
