Big Thief - "Born for Loving You"

There are a lot of bands doing the indie rock meets Americana thing these days, but no one nails it quite like Big Thief. The band just released a new single that is the pinnacle of the genre. "Born for Loving You" is a cheery and breezy song that lands right in between indie rock and folk. Buck Meek's trademark guitar gives the song the perfect level of fuzzy twang, and the song is perfect for both holding onto the last days of summer and welcoming fall. The song just sounds like a hug can feel, and if you can't get into "Born for Loving You," you may need to check to see if you have a soul.

You can listen to "Born for Loving You" below. The song will be the B-side to the "Vampire Empire" 7" due out on October 20 via 4AD, and is available for pre-order here. For more on Big Thief, check out the artist's website.

Buck Meek - "Paradise"

Despite making relatively traditional music, Buck Meek truly has his own sound. Despite the Big Thief guitarist's distinctive voice and vocal style, even the playing on his latest single, "Paradise," has it's own specific sound. The new single is almost painfully slow and oddly hypnotic. Meek's vocals seem to go on at their own pace, speeding up and slowing down as the mood changes, with instrumentation that's almost too sparse. "Paradise" is the kind of song that shouldn't work, and couldn't with any other artist. Buck Meek has almost created his very own genre of folk.

Buck Meek says of his latest single:

“Sometimes when you half-hear something spoken, something unspoken inside the words is revealed. Your mind fills in the blank, finishes the sentence, infers deep meaning - though you still can’t fully explain it. Jolie Holland sent me some of the lyrics for this song, about feeling in awe of the vastness within a loved one, and I wrote it thinking about how love often feels too big to comprehend, like death, or life after death, or space.”

You can listen to "Paradise" below. Haunted Mountain is due out August 25 on 4AD, and is available for pre-order here. For more on Buck Meek, check out the artist's website. Upcoming tour dates are below the song.

Buck Meek - "Haunted Mountain"

Aside from being the guitarist in Big Thief, Buck Meek has been quite the established solo artist. His 2021 album Two Saviors was a favorite of mine, and now he's back with new music. "Haunted Mountain," co-written with Jolie Holland, is a ramblin' style country song. It has just the slightest hints of indie rock, but other than that this is just a straight up country/Americana track. It's an upbeat song that just has a timeless quality. It feels like it could have been released any time in the last fifty to sixty years. In fact, the occasional indie rock guitar has some roots in Neil Young, which adds more to the timeless quality.

Buck Meek says of his new song:

“It’s about being humbled by the thing you’re drawing power from only at which point an actual, fair relationship begins."

You can watch the video for "Haunted Mountain" below. The album Haunted Mountain is due out August 25 on 4AD, and is available for pre-order here. For more on Buck Meek, check out the artist's website. Upcoming tour dates are below the video.

Mary Elizabeth Remington featuring Adrianne Lenker - "Dresser Hill"

Hailing from Ware, MA, Mary Elizabeth Remington brought in some friends for her upcoming album. The new single, "Dresser Hill," features vocals from Adrianne Lenker of Big Thief, percussion by James Krivchenia (also Big Thief), and guitar by Mat Davidson (Twain). Most of "Dresser Hill" is just Remington and Lenker's vocals. Remington takes the lead with Lenker accompanying her. The instruments are just barely there, coming in softly and occasionally. It's a traditional sounding folk song focusing on the pair harmonizing perfectly. The simplicity of the song is what is so captivating about it. It feels like you've stumbled onto friends hanging out and playing music while on a walk in the woods.

You can listen to "Dresser Hill" below. In Embudo is due out February 10, and can be pre-ordered here. For more on Mary Elizabeth Remington, check out the artist on Facebook and Instagram.

First Listen: New Releases for 11 February

Artist: Empath
Album: Visitor
Quick Thoughts: This album surprised me in all the best ways. It's a light, poppy, fuzzy indie rock effort with some truly catchy songs throughout its runtime, and ended up being a low-key favorite this week. It's definitely got the indie rock pastiche going for it, but it's also advanced from their also-solid debut. If you like the melodic lower-fi slice of independent rock, check this one out.
Songs of Note: "Born 100 Times," "Passing Stranger," "Diamond Eyelids"

Artist: Kill Alters
Album: Armed to the Teeth L.M.O.M.M.
Quick Thoughts: I should not like this as much as I do. Is Kill Alters post-punk? Industrial? Just loud? I have no idea, but I do know that I truly loved this record in so many ways. It's strange and unsettling, but still incredibly compelling as a complete package. Fair warning: this is not for everybody, but this was very much for me and is 100% the album I'm most looking forward to returning to this week.
Songs of Note: "Dissect Me," "Slow Heat," "Phantom Body 2"

Artist: Dropper
Album: Don't Talk to Me
Quick Thoughts: Dropper came out of nowhere for me and gave me a bunch of songs that I didn't know I needed. It's just the type of rock music I needed this week, and there's a lot to love on a whole - if you can listen to "Two Dollar Beer" and not smile, in particular, I don't really know what you're doing here. A very solid effort.
Songs of Note: "Two Dollar Beer," "Signal"

Artist: Eddie Vedder
Album: Earthling
Quick Thoughts: Last year it finally clicked for me re: Pearl Jam. Dunno what took me so long, but here we are, with my being excited about an Eddie Vedder solo album. While parts of it feel about as indulgent as you'd expect, there are songs like "Power of Right" and "Good and Evil" that, for my money, stand up to some of my favorite Pearl Jam songs. Chances are you already know whether you'll like this or not, but if you're on the fence I think you'll be surprised.
Songs of Note: "Long Way," "Power of Right," "Good and Evil," "Try"

Artist: Frank Turner
Album: FTHC
Quick Thoughts: We're both fans of Frank Turner here, but felt the same way about some of his more recent efforts. FTHC, however, is the return to form we were hoping for. The sort of heartfelt punk-adjacent songwriting in some of his great early work is on display here, and songs like "Fatherless" and "A Wave Across A Bay" hit hard alongside songs like "The Resurrectionists" and "Punches" that sound hard, too. This is a truly great album, and you shouldn't ignore it.
Songs of Note: "The Gathering," "Fatherless," "A Wave Across A Bay," "The Resurrectionists," "Punches," "The Work," "The Zeitbeast"

Artist: Big Thief
Album: Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You
Quick Thoughts: Big Thief hasn't steered us wrong yet, but this latest album definitely leans hard into the Buck Meek-style roots music in a way I didn't expect, and that is overall a real good thing. There are a few stellar gems on this one when you can always expect a gem or two from the band, and this is familiar enough to appeal to fans while changing the script a little along the way.
Songs of Note: "Sparrow," "Spud Infinity," "Little Things," "Simulation Swarm," "Red Moon"

Artist: The Cactus Blossoms
Album: One Day
Quick Thoughts: This was a late catch from me and still glad I caught it. The Cactus Blossoms do that roots-inspired retro-folk so well, it's a wonder they aren't huge at this point. Yeah, Orville Peck's going to get all the attention this week, but One Day is the one that ultimately deserves your ears.
Songs of Note: "Hey Baby," "Is It Over"

Of note:

* OMBIIGIZI - Sewn Back Together (Collab between Status/Non-Status and Zoon)
* Spoon - Lucifer on the Sofa (Solid and reliable.)
* Chris Farren - Death Don't Wait (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (Soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist. Look out for the Bond-ish "main title" theme with Laura Stevenson on vocals.)
* GRMLN and TAESAN - American Boy (Brothers with songs they wrote together. Gorgeous at times.)
* alt-J - The Dream
* Sea Change - Mutual Dreaming
* Keren Ann & Quatuor Debussy - Keren Ann & Quatuor Debussy
* Kinbrae and Clare Archibald - Birl of Unmap
* More Eaze and Claire Rousay - Never Stop Texting Me
* Lady Pills - What I Want

EPs:

* Kim Petras - Slut Pop (Channeling her inner Ayesha Erotica.)
* Tomato Flower - Gold Arc
* The Wave Pictures - When the Purple Emperor Spreads His Wings: Winter
* Orville Peck - Bronco: Chapter 1
* Alto Arc - Alto Arc
* Marissa Nadler - The Wrath of the Clouds
* Kelsey Bulkin - Hear Me Beloved
* Yung Gravy and Dillon Francis - Cake and Cognac
Live albums/Compilations/Reissues:

* Tegan and Sara - Still Jealous (A reimagining of their breakout album.)

Also out:

* Amos Lee - Dreamland
* Joywave - Cleanse
* The Rumjacks - Brass for Gold

Big Thief - "Certainty"

Big Thief have become universally beloved over the past five years with their unique blend of indie rock and folk, swaying between the two genres with ease. Their latest single, "Certainty," might just be their most traditionally folky single yet. The song is filled with tons of twang and classic folk elements. It truly sounds like a group of friends hanging out on a porch just playing some music together. And there's a good reason for that. The song was recorded directly to a four track during a multi-day power outage at the studio. Buck Meek explains:

“On the third day of the outage, I found Adrianne on the porch writing a new song, so I sat with her and we finished it together, with the rain falling from the gutters splashing over our guitars. James and Sam saw us writing, and quickly set up a four track tape machine in the kitchen, powered by the F250 cigarette lighter out in the yard. They set up the drums by the sink, and Max plugged his bass into a bluetooth speaker set on top of the stove. Take 2 had a great bark from Sam and Hannah's pup Jan during the solo, but we ended up going with take 3 because it took us about that long to learn the chords. Then we made pancakes and sausages and ate breakfast for dinner."

You can listen to "Certainty" below. You can get a copy of the single here. For more on Big Thief, check out the band's website. Upcoming tour dates are below the song.

Bella White Covers Buck Meek

Photo via Facebook

Just as most artists are winding down at home performances and covers series, Bella White has started one up! This week saw the beginning of her "Under the Covers" series which will see her covering a song from another artist from the comfort of her bed weekly. The debut edition is a cover of Buck Meek's "Candle" from his Two Saviors album released back in January. It's obviously going to be a more stripped down version and missing the steel guitar of the original, but other than that it's quite true to the original. White takes Meek's song and makes it more of a traditionally folk song. It's a gorgeous cover that sounds far better than most bedroom covers, and we can't wait for week two!

In a Facebook post, White explains her choice of "Candle":

"when this song came out in January I found myself listening to it a lot. Perhaps I was relying on it (and the whole album) as a source for escapism to get through the pandemic winter. i hope you enjoy my take."

You can watch Bella White covering "Candle" below. For more on Bella White, check out the artist's website.

Big Thief - "Love In Mine"

One of the very few good things to come out of quarantine is that bands are starting to dig around their archives for unreleased music. Big Thief are the latest with "Love In Mine," an outtake from their 2019 album Two Hands. Big Thief diehards are sure to know the song, as it appeared as the b-side on a 7" the band mailed to fans when they announced Two Hands.

"Love In Mine" is beautiful. It's a quiet little folky song that borders on ethereal but is far too grounded. As with all Big Thief songs, the focus is Adrianne Lenker's vocals. She has a way to just draw you in and hold you with her voice, which has never sounded as warm and inviting as it does here.

You can listen to "Love In Mine" below. Big Thief is also offering up demos they recorded in February 2018 on their Bandcamp to raise funds for their road crew who are obviously currently out of work. Demos Vol. 1 - Topanga Canyon, CA - Feb 2018 is available here. For more on Big Thief, check out their website.

First Listen: New Releases for 11 October

Artist: The Dead South
Album: Sugar & Joy
Quick Description: New album from an underrated roots act.
Why You Should Listen: They're gritty but polished, which is a great mix.
Overall Thoughts: For what it’s worth, I never read about The Dead South when I’m hearing about current roots/Americana acts, and I don’t know why, because they’re great. They had the one viral hit, yes, but this new album does not betray their sound or provide any sort of sea change that would make you think they’re anything less than one of the more solid, skilled acts in the genre. If you want good roots music? Just make time for this.
Recommendation: You won’t regret a moment of it.

Artist: Cursive
Album: Get Fixed
Quick Description: Second new album this year from the indie emo band.
Why You Should Listen: Cursive is good, guys.
Overall Thoughts: A surprise second release from the indie act, this one is a little more chamber-emo than the harshness of the solid album earlier this year, but it definitely doesn’t feel like a ton of castoff songs. Cur have been great for some time now, and this is just the latest in their line of quality music.
Recommendation: Don’t miss out.

Artist: Very Good
Album: Adulthood
Quick Description: One of the more interesting folkish listens of the week.
Why You Should Listen: Defies any expectations you may have.
Overall Thoughts: This is a very interesting listen in a lot of ways. I can’t say for sure whether it works for me on first listen, as it is such a stilted jolt to the system for what comes across as a folk-style record, but still such a fascinating adventure. I didn’t want to ignore this one this week, and if you’re feeling like a trek off the beaten path…
Recommendation: Worth your time.

Artist: Kim Gordon
Album: No Home Record
Quick Description: Sonic Youth frontwoman with her first solo album.
Why You Should Listen: Kim Gordon is basically grunge royalty.
Overall Thoughts: An odd and frustrating record in all the right ways. Most of my favorite Sonic Youth songs featured Kim Gordon in a big way, so I’ve been low-key looking forward to this effort. The result ends up being something very odd and often impenetrable, and that isn’t a bad thing. In fact, in many ways, it is exactly what I was hoping for and expecting from it. This is basically impossible to really write about coherently, but it is worth a full listen. For me, I’m definitely looking to revisit.
Recommendation: A really fascinating experience.

Artist: The Building
Album: PETRA
Quick Description: Thoughtful, interesting folk rock.
Why You Should Listen: This doesn't play it entirely straight.
Overall Thoughts: The number of fairly basic folk rock records that come across our weekly listens is often staggering, but this means that when a superlative one hits our stack, we notice. This is one of them, with a pleasant demeanor and some interesting musical and lyrical flourishes that sets it apart. There’s something a little more special about this one...
Recommendation: ...so check it out.

Artist: Big Thief
Album: Two Hands
Quick Description: Second album this year from the indie faves.
Why You Should Listen: More in line with what you might expect.
Overall Thoughts: Big Thief is back after a few months with a new album. This one feels a lot closer to what I expect compared to U.F.O.F., and the result is a pretty solid listen that doesn’t feel like a bunch of throwaways from the previous sessions.
Recommendation: Good for fans, worth it for all.

Of note:

* Chris Farren - Born Hot (Power pop lives!)
* Tahiti 80 - Fear of an Acoustic Planet (Sneaky good.)
* 808 State - Transmission Suite
* Elbow - Giants of All Sizes
* Lemolo - Swansea
* Allah-Las - LAHS
* Suitcase Sam - Goodnight Riverdale Park
* Newmoon - Nothing Lasts Forever

* The Hard-Ons - So I Could Have Them Destroyed

* Lindstrom - On a Clear Day I Can See You Forever
* Babehaven - Suspended Animation

Big Thief - "Forgotten Eyes"

Big Thief is set to release their second album this year next week. You might think that they might be spreading their material a bit thin and the upcoming album would be leftovers from the first. Judging by the previous single and "Forgotten Eyes," they were saving the best for this month. "Forgotten Eyes" is exactly what we want from Big Thief: It's a mixture of equal parts beauty and discomfort. It's folk adjacent indie rock that feels important and lovely while working through some pain and negativity. It's this play between the light and the dark that makes Big Thief truly great.

You can listen to "Forgotten Eyes" below. Two Hands, the new album from Big Thief, will be out October 11 via 4AD. You can pre-order the album here. For more on Big Thief, check out their website. Current tour dates are below the song.

Big Thief - "Not"

Confession time: As much as I absolutely loved Big Thief's 2016 debut Masterpiece, I just wasn't able to get into Capacity or U.F.O.F. Those albums were fine, but they just didn't grab me the way their first album did. I know, I know... I'm probably wrong. Somehow they're set to release a fourth album in the fall, and if the first single is any indication, I'm going to be very happy with this new one. "Not" reminds me of Masterpiece. It goes back to that beautiful yet noisy rock epics I came to love from Big Thief. "Not" sounds like it could break apart at any moment, but it keeps on chugging along, gaining momentum without the tempo speeding up. Plus, it climaxes with one of the most epic J Mascis worthy guitar solos I've heard in years.

You can listen to "Not" below. Two Hands, the upcoming album from Big Thief, will be available October 11 via 4AD. You can pre-order the album here. For more on Big Thief, check out their website. Current tour dates are below the song.

Adrianne Lenker - "cradle"

We've both been huge fans of both of Big Thief's albums, so we're pretty excited that Adrianne Lenker is proving to be absurdly prolific and is releasing a solo album this year. "cradle" is the first single off of her solo album, and it's what I had expected in the best possible way. Big Thief's music isn't exactly hard rock, but it's definitely rock with some fantastic guitar flurries. "cradle" is decidedly more quiet and introspective. Lenker's vocals are barely a whisper above a barely plucked guitar. Harmonizing background vocalization fills out the song to give it not quite a lush sound, but definitely a fuller sound.

You can listen to "cradle" below. abysskiss, the new solo album from Adrianne Lenker, will be out October 5 on Saddle Creek. You can pre-order your copy here. For more on Adrianne Lenker, check out her website.

Boston Calling 2018 Looks Pretty Great

This is apparently the week that every single major festival is going to announce their line ups, and most have been rather... underwhelming. I know that middle aged dads aren't exactly the target audience for music festivals, but we like to think we're "with it" here. Regardless, I've only seen about 3-5 artists per festival that I've cared about, and that has gone down as I realize that the Belly they've booked is the wrong Belly.

That's why we're excited about Boston Calling this year. The headliners aren't all that thrilling (pretty sure Eminem is playing every festival this year, but yay for Jack White!) and of course The National are playing,  but as you go down the poster we start getting more intrigued. Fleet Foxes, St. Vincent, and The Decemberists are beloved by young and aging hipsters, plus they booked the right Belly and Pussy Riot. You go even further down and find Big Thief and Charly Bliss, who have been two of our favorites the past couple of years. Way down on the bottom line is the most exciting for us, with Third Man Records' artist Lillie Mae in what I believe is her first New England performance, and our beloved local indie rockers Weakened Friends and hip hop stars STL GLD.

Boston Calling is selling early ticket packages now. For more information on Boston Calling, check out their website.

First Listen: New Releases for June 9

A solid week.

Album of the Week:

Artist: The Secret Sisters
Album: You Don't Own Me Anymore
Quick Description: Long-awaited third album from the folkies.
Why You Should Listen: This is a gorgeous, amazing album.
Overall Thoughts: I won’t lie – the second Secret Sisters album didn’t grab me the way the first one did. This new album sounded promising given the early music that was released, and the whole album is a nice, familiar relief. I loved every aspect of this, which is why it’s my album of the week – it’s taken a few albums, but they’ve really perfected their sound. The harmonies are spot on, the music absolutely gorgeous. There is nothing negative I can say about this, and it’s an album that needs to be on your list for listening this week.
Recommendation: A must-listen, easily the best of the week.

Artist: Katy Perry
Album: Witness
Quick Description: Pop starlet's latest.
Why You Should Listen: It's not what you think.
Overall Thoughts: I was actually kind of excited when I heard that Taylor Swift, in the most petty pop star fashion imaginable, put all her music back on Spotify on the day that Katy Perry’s new album came out. They have some sort of feud going, I don’t pretend to know the details, but the end result is that they don’t get along to the point where at least one wants to sabotage the other’s career. So I had it all planned out – I hadn’t heard TayTay’s new album yet, so I’d do a fun tale-of-the-tape thing for yesterday for the two albums. The problem? 1984 is really dull and uninteresting. ESPECIALLY compared to Witness, which is a Katy Perry album that, at least for me, upended what I believe Katy Perry to be. It feels different and ambitious and feels like an attempt to break out of whatever it is she typically does. While 1984 is pop music distilled into its purest, glossy form, Witness feels like someone trying to spread their wings and get out of the polished stuff a bit. It’s a little long and doesn’t always work, but it’s something I found worth listening to. And sure, at the end of the day? I’ll take Carly Rae any day of the week. But if your entire vision of Katy Perry is one of really obnoxious pop star nonsense, this might change your mind without any visuals to go along with it.
Recommendation: Worth a listen.

Artist: Zephaniah Ohora & The 18 Wheelers
Album: This Highway
Quick Description: Great traditional country.
Why You Should Listen: This is a throwback like so many others, yet seems to do it so effortlessly.
Overall Thoughts: We cover a lot of this throwback country folk stuff here, and there’s a habit to make it all out to sound the same or that it’s not breaking ground. I think there’s a bit of a perception that it’s simple music at its core, and that anyone could do it. Zephaniah Ohora is great because, as far as I can tell, he makes the easy sound super difficult to perfect and then does a good job perfecting it. Toward the end of the album, Ohora presents a version of “Somethin’ Stupid” that immediately became a favorite version for me, and it really personifies how really great this record is. A great listen from start to finish.
Recommendation: This is so great, you need to listen to it.

Artist: SZA
Album: Ctrl
Quick Description: First proper album from the buzzworthy R&B singer.
Why You Should Listen: Her first release was really noteworthy.
Overall Thoughts: I really liked SZA’s debut mini-album, and I’ve been waiting for the next thing from her for some time. Unfortunately, this full-length does not feel nearly as unique and groundbreaking as her debut, and that’s a shame. It feels like rote soulful R&B, and in a busy week – and a busy genre, lately – this just doesn’t stand out. I really wanted more from this and it doesn’t deliver on a whole.
Recommendation: Skip this one.

Artist: Glen Campbell
Album: Adios
Quick Description: The country legend's final album.
Why You Should Listen: Glen Campbell deserves 40 more minutes of your time, even if this wasn't pretty solid.
Overall Thoughts: Listening to Glen Campbell these days is difficult. My mother is in the last late stages of Alzheimer’s, and knowing that Campbell is going through the same trajectory doesn’t make this farewell album any easier. Campbell always had a purity of sorts to his approach, and while his voice is wavering a little more on this album, this is a worthy, albeit sad, curtain call for the country legend.
Recommendation: Worth at least one listen.

Artist: Kronos Quartet
Album: Folk Songs
Quick Description: The contemporary classical act goes a little more modern.
Why You Should Listen: It's pretty and it has some of your favorites featured.
Overall Thoughts: Kronos Quartet is the classical instrumental go-to for the indie set, I feel, and their latest album is a series of collaborations with some of our favorites here. It’s musically interesting, it’s contextually exciting, and there are a lot of solid musical parts to this whole that make it a worthwhile endeavor. The Rhiannon Giddens stuff in particular is an attention-grabber at first listen, so definitely give this one a fair shot.
Recommendation: Absolutely a fun, interesting listen.

Artist: Rancid
Album: Trouble Maker
Quick Description: The latest from the punk rock royalty.
Why You Should Listen: I mean, it's Rancid. You have to ask?
Overall Thoughts: Rancid has been around forever, and this new record… well, it’s Rancid. I’m not sure what to expect in terms of anything new, but it’s that classic slice of punk rock that feels familiar. This won’t bring along any new fans, and there’s no “Time Bomb” or anything like that, but it’s a solid traditional punk record.
Recommendation: You know what you're getting here.

Artist: London Grammar
Album: Truth is a Beautiful Thing
Quick Description: Gorgeous light rock.
Why You Should Listen: No other group sounds like this.
Overall Thoughts: I see a lot of people refer to London Grammar as a purveyor of torch songs, and okay, sure. For me, they fill a niche hole that I didn't realize I wanted filled, and it just works. This new album has a seemingly fuller sound than their last, and it's just so, so pretty. You won't find anything else recently that does what London Grammar is doing here, and that alone is a reason to check them out.
Recommendation: A great listen.

Artist: Allie X
Album: ColleXion II
Quick Description: Indie pop with a mainstream bent.
Why You Should Listen: You like pop music but don't care to admit it.
Overall Thoughts: It's frankly strange to listen to this the same week as Katy Perry, given that Perry is trying new things while Allie X, instead of doing some stuff that made her interesting in the past, stays in her lane. I was obsessed with the initial mix of "Old Habits Die Hard," and the new take feels kind of sanitary and bland... a good take on this album on a whole, honestly. I wanted more than I got, and ultimately...
Recommendation: ...this was a disappointment.

Artist: Phoenix
Album: Ti Amo
Quick Description: Latest from the French indie favorites.
Why You Should Listen: They get a little weird?
Overall Thoughts: I think what's striking about this album is that it feels like a recent Ra Ra Riot record while still maintaining that purity that comes from what Phoenix does. They've never been a favorite of mine, but they know how to write a great indie rock song and this album is less about those and more about mixing it up a bit. I'm into it, moreso than anything since Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.
Recommendation: Really solid listen.

Artist: Big Thief
Album: Capacity
Quick Description: Highly-anticipated sophomore effort from the indie act.
Why You Should Listen: You recognize "Masterpiece" as the song it is.
Overall Thoughts: I'll say two things about this album: 1) It's not what you think it is in that it doesn't sound completely like their first album, and there is not a song on here that's quite like the breakthrough "Masterpiece" was, and 2) this album is one of the best of the week, if not the year, because it's such a really gorgeous, well-crafted album from start to finish. I was taken aback by how quiet and seemingly introspective it was on first listen, and while I'm not sure it lands quite the way I expected after their first album, that doesn't matter. This album is simply great.
Recommendation: A high-quality, must-listen effort.

Artist: Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner, James McAlister
Album: Planetarium
Quick Description: A concept album about the Solar System from some indie rockers and a classical composer.
Why You Should Listen: This is just weird enough to be fun, but still fun enough to not be too weird.
Overall Thoughts: Sufjan Stevens put out an ambitious, strange album called The Age of Adz however many years ago. An experiment in electronic sounds and such, it was probably a little divisive even though I was into it. This concept album absolutely has those touchstones throughout, but I don't mean to diminish the other efforts as well - Nico Muhly's influence is probably the clearest, where the way this is structured has a modern classical feel to it without being completely incomprehensible. I've written about "challenging" albums before, and this certainly qualifies, but not in a way where I feel it would be inaccessible to most listeners. It's weird, but it's wonderful.
Recommendation: Give this a shot.
