Other Brother Darryl - "Drive"

Image
Photo by Chris Valle Boston's "cosmic canyon rock band" Other Brother Darryl have released a new single about making sure to tell your friends you love them, since you never quite know when you won't get the chance again. As you may know, bandmember Dave Mirabella passed away last year, so it's a message they truly mean. "Drive" doesn't sound like anything that typically comes out of Boston. It sounds more like vintage Laurel Canyon bands, but with a Northeast blue collar sensibility. I'm getting some serious Corsby, Stills, Nash & Young vibes on this one, with it's use of vocal harmonies throughout mixed with killer twangy electric guitar solos. It's a heartbreaking song, but one we should all listen to the message of. Nate Leavitt (guitar and vocals) says of his band's new song: “To me, the song says, ‘It’ll be okay. Keep driving, you’ll get there.’ My favorite line is, ‘If you found someone whose beats so you won’t die.’ It rea...

The Bobby Lees - "Drive"

Image
This is the week that the new  Jon Spencer produced  album from The Bobby Lees should be out, but due to COVID-19 it's been delayed until July 17. At least we have a new song to listen to while we wait an extra two months. "Drive" sounds like the song that wants to be the hit. It's still the hyped up punk blues that we're coming to love from the Woodstock, NY band, but this one is about as pop friendly as we're going to get from them. It's undeniably catchy, but more mainstream music fans are really going to struggle through the discordance that's still pervading throughout the song (which we mean in the best possible way). Plus, there's an all too brief J Mascis style guitar solo that threatens to plunge the song into total chaos. Luckily, The Bobby Lees use some scream along vocals that do that job quite nicely. You can watch the video for "Drive" below. Skin Suit , the upcoming album from The Bobby Lees, will be out July 17 on Aliv...

The Wolff Sisters - "Drive"

Image
The Wolff Sisters just do the Americana/folk think perfectly. Their latest single, "Drive," hits in that perfect spot you want from a song from them: It's equal parts down home twang, modern more mainstream folk, and just good old rock music. "Drive" takes the best parts of all three of those styles (the roots of Americana, the pleasant, familiar feel of mainstream country, and the killer guitars of rock) and combines them all into a sound that may not break down walls, but it is all theirs. If this sounds like anything you might like, you'll probably end up loving it. You can listen to "Drive" below. Queendom of Nothing , the upcoming album from The Wolff Sisters, will be out "soon." For more on The Wolff Sisters, check out their website . If you happen to be in New England, they have a trio of shows this weekend: August 2 at Riverwalk Cafe and Music Bar in Nashua, NH (with Julie Rhodes!), August 3 Live at the Barn in Chaplin, CT, an...

Matt Pond PA Covers The Cars

Image
Photo via Facebook Matt Pond PA might love covers as much as we do. As they wind down, they're giving us another great cover song. This time it's for The Cars' classic "Drive." "Drive" might be my least favorite of The Cars' hit songs, but that being said, it's still a great song. Matt Pond PA's version of it keeps it completely true to the original, which is hard to do without synthesizers. Instead, it's a dreamy folk ballad version with pedal steel standing in for the synths. Somehow, this makes it an absolutely perfect cover song. You can listen to Matt Pond PA's cover of "Drive" below. For more on Matt Pond PA, including what appear to be their final tour dates, check out their website .
