Live Shows: In Between Days Festival, Veteran's Memorial Stadium, Quincy, MA 8/19/23

Towards the end of Modest Mouse's headlining set on Saturday night, Isaac Brock commented that he can normally ignore about half of the bands during a festival, but In Between Days just kept making him want to watch every band from the very start of the day. I ended up having the same experience. When I looked at the schedule, there were some bands I wasn't that familiar with or hadn't been able to get into previously, so I figured I'd have some downtime to casually eat some food from the food trucks, or play some free classic arcade games at the pop-up arcade, but instead for ten hours (ok, at one point I did stop to shove a quesadilla in my face for five minutes) I was just blown away watching band after band after band!

I got there a couple of minutes late, and Quincy's own Gypsy Moths were already rocking the Arbella Insurance stage. Their classic Boston garage rock set the stage for the festival perfectly without sounding anything like any of the other bands on the bill. We also got fantastic sets from other Boston area bands Paper Tigers (who opened up the main stage with a mind blowing set of mainstream alt-rock), Carissa Johnson, Dutch Tulips, and Shallow Pools. Carissa Johnson was great as always, and a crowd seemed to materialize out of nowhere once she started.

I planned to eat and play some arcade games during Fantastic Cat and Shallow Pools. I had never heard of Fantastic Cat, and from what I had heard, Shallow Pools have always been a bit too pop for me. But Fantastic Cat ended up sucking me in with their Americana tinged alt-rock. I kept thinking I'd walk away during the next song, and I just kept staying. I decided to watch a bit of Shallow Pools out of obligation to at least see everyone. As soon as they started playing, I was hooked. The band played a completely infectious set of dance songs that was completely irresistible live. This may very well end up becoming a Shallow Pools fan page if we're not careful.

Slothrust have always been a band I've liked but not loved. After Saturday, that has completely changed. The band was joined by Annie Hoffman from Weakened Friends on bass, and live they were just a force of nature. They seemed to be the first band of the day people came for, and I understand why. They played a set of noisy indie rock that bordered on pop, with Leah Wellbaum secretly being one of the most magnetic frontpeople in indie rock today. Plus, busting out an indie rock "Baby One More Time" is always welcome.

I've seen Weakened Friends more times than I can count, starting off when they were pretty much Boston's house band for 90's reunions coming through town. They have grown exponentially since then, and even though I typically prefer small club shows to festivals, it was great seeing them shine in a larger venue. They played a brand new song for the first time that could very well end up being their finest song to date. It was an intense and joyous set that felt like it accidentally ended a few minutes too early.

Somehow I had never seen Sunny Day Real Estate despite being a fan for decades. Turns out I waited too long. The emo legends were unbelievably tight, and just rocked out in front of a field of die hards. Every song in their playlist was a classic, but I forgot just how great "In Circles" was in particular. I had walked away before they finished to secure a space for The Beths (who were enjoying their space on stage to watch Sunny Day finish out) and had instant regret once that song came on.

The Beths were the first band on the Arbella Insurance stage that had a crowd well before they started. This was somehow my third time seeing the New Zealand indie rockers play in the last fifty-three weeks, and I'm certainly not sick of them yet. It was a shortened version of their set at The Sinclair earlier this year, but it was no less entertaining. The Beths have this great rapport in their stage banter which is just as much fun as their live set, and they are a great live band. Isaac Brock in particular became a fan of theirs, even if he couldn't remember their name.

Modest Mouse were another band I got to check off my bucket list despite decades of fandom. I expected them to be great, but it turned out to be one of the greatest shows I've seen in my nearly three decades of regularly seeing live music. Their nearly two hour set kept the entire crowd in a state of bliss. Typically festivals are mostly filled with casual fans and a sprinkling of die hards, but Modest Mouse played to a field of die hards. "Cowboy Dan" got a much bigger reaction from the crowd than the giant hits "Fire It Up" and "Float On" received. Usually two hours would be enough, but a sizable portion of the crowd kept waiting and hoping for more even after the house lights came on and recorded music started playing.

In Between Days might just be the perfect festival. It boasted a perfect line up of great acts. There were no overlapping sets, and you could see both stages from the other one. Between four thousand and five thousand fans attended both days, which is just big enough to feel like a big show but not too big to get overwhelmed. It was easy to get up close if you wanted, or you could lounge under the shade tent or hang out in the stadium's seats. You would assume that after ten hours of music, I would have been exhausted, but I was completely wired. I took a longer way home, and had trouble falling asleep because I was still on a musical high. Usually I listen to artists before I see them, but I've spent the past few days almost exclusively binging Modest Mouse, Sunny Day Real Estate, etc. to bask in my memories. In a festival world where bigger is supposedly better, In Between Days offered a perfect alternative with a well curated line up and the perfect day of the summer.

The Beths - "Watching the Credits"

Recorded during the sessions for last year's phenomenal Expert in a Dying Field, "Watching the Credits" was left off that album, but luckily The Beths have decided to release the song as a standalone single. "Watching the Credits" is an indie rock power pop song that barrels along for it's three minute run time. The song is about frontwoman Elizabeth Stokes' habit of learning about movies without watching them. What's phenomenal about this song is how cinematic it is for a three minute pop song. It's almost done in three acts with a build, a climax, and an ending. It even has some strings just to tug at your emotions. If it isn't my imagination coming up with this concept, "Watching the Credits" is a wonderfully clever song that is quickly becoming one of my all time favorites from The Beths.

You can listen to "Watching the Credits" below. For more on The Beths, check out their website. Upcoming tour dates are below the video, including a stop at In Between Days Festival in Quincy, MA on August 19.

First Listen: New Releases for 16 September 2022

Artist: The Beths
Album: Expert in a Dying Field
Quick Thoughts: The Beths are the best indie/alternative rock band going right now. I said it because it's true. Experts is another incredible entry in a discography of what is now three great releases, and the band shows no signs of slowing down. There's not a bad song on here, and they know how to make a tight rock song. One of the best of the summer.
Songs of Note: "Silence is Golden," "Knees Deep," "Head in the Clouds," "I Told You That I Was Afraid"

Artist: Tysk Tysk Task
Album: You're Sorry More
Quick Thoughts: There's not much I can say about Tysk Tysk Task that Ken hasn't said better in his many live reviews and song highlights. What I will add is that the band walks a fine line between careful and chaotic in a way other bands would fail, and what it means is a memorable record that has all the dark horse qualities for an album that will stick with you. A mandatory listen this week.
Songs of Note: "Contagion," "Rosegold," "I Need This"

Artist: DOMi and JD BECK
Album: NOT TiGHT
Quick Thoughts: I joked with Ken that I am "learn about new music from The New Yorker years old," but that's how I learned about the modern jazz-but-not-quite stylings of DOMi and JD BECK. The duo feel like they're making jazz music for people who don't like jazz (like me), and it just works. This won't be to everyone's taste, but I have to admit: it was to mine.
Songs of Note: "NOT TiGHT," "TAKE A CHANCE"

Artist: Well Wisher
Album: That Weight
Quick Thoughts: Well Wisher offers up a powerful, hook-laden indie rock record that feels crunchy and raw in all the right ways. I don't have a ton to say about it - it's one of the more well-done indie rock efforts of the last few months and Well Wisher is an act you should keep on your radar.
Songs of Note: "Need You Around," "29," "Miserable," "That Weight"

Artist: Darkswoon
Album: Bloom // Decay
Quick Thoughts: I always love when bands sound like what their name evokes. Darkswoon is a dreamy, gothy-sounding band that really impressed me on this album, and the heavy gloom that permeates the post-punk framework here just works. Of all the albums out this week, this is probably the one I'm most excited to get back to.
Songs of Note: "Bloom Decay," "Under Glass"

Artist: Starcrawler
Album: She Said
Quick Thoughts: Wanted to highlight this: if there's a such thing as modern indie glam, Starcrawler might be it. Riffs for days, soaring choruses, it's the total package. They're a really underrated and underappreciated rock band, and deserve your attention.
Songs of Note: "Roadkill," "Stranded"

Artist: Lissie
Album: Carving Canyons
Quick Thoughts: I've been a fan of Lissie for ages, and this latest album is the closest I've felt an album was to her early work as anything she's done of late. This feel a lot like classic Lissie, and that means some great songwriting and some catchy hooks to go along with some really introspective lyrics. If you're not on board yet, by all means, it's time.
Songs of Note: "Sad," "Chasing the Sun," "Night Moves," "Unlock the Chains"

Artist: Rina Sawayama
Album: Hold the Girl
Quick Thoughts: If you closed your eyes and heard this on its own, you might be convinced it's a Lady Gaga record. That's how solid this listen is from top to bottom. The edge that a lot of her debut had is gone, but in its place is a really great pop record that deserves your time. Loved this one.
Songs of Note: "Hold the Girl," "This Hell," "Frankenstein"

Of note:

* Herva - Seez (Very Aphex Twin-esque.)
* Gogol Bordello - Dolidaritine (A return to form of sorts.)
* Death Cab for Cutie - Asphalt Meadows (They've fully become a dad rock band and I'm cool with it.)

* Hickeys - Fragile Structure
* (The London) Suede - Autofiction

The Beths - "Knees Deep"

At this point, The Beths releasing a fantastic indie rock/pop song isn't a huge story. The New Zealand band just keeps cranking out great single after great single seemingly at ease. But something is just different about their latest. "Knees Deep" leans a little more towards the pop side of things. It's a little bit cleaner and more polished than what we normally hear from The Beths, but in a fantastic way. "Knees Deep" is the kind of song that should be a huge crossover hit, and it still could be if there is any justice in the world. It's undeniably catchy with mesmerizing guitar work. If you've somehow avoided jumping on The Beths' bandwagon so far, this one will basically force you onboard.

Singer/guitarist Liz Stokes says of the new single:

I'm the kind of person who wants to go swimming, but takes like ten minutes to get all the way into the cold water, slowly and painfully. I hate this about myself, and am kind of envious of people who can just jump straight in the deep end. In a shocking twist, this is also a metaphor?! For how I wish I was the kind of person who was brave and decisive instead of cautious and scared.”

You can watch the video for "Knees Deep" below. Expert in a Dying Field is due out September 16 on Carpark Records, and can be pre-ordered here. For more on The Beths, check out the band's website. Upcoming tour dates are below the video.

Live Shows: Here and There Festival, Mass MoCA, North Adams, MA 8/13/22

When I first heard about the Courtney Barnett curated Here and There Festival, I knew I wanted to attend. Courtney Barnett putting together a travelling festival with a revolving group of artists playing? When I saw our local one was being held at Mass MoCA in North Adams, which is one of my favorite festival venues, and was going to be one of the larger all day ones, and also included Hana Vu, Faye Webster, The Beths, and Lucy Dacus, all of which are artists I'll go see any time they play in the area? How could I miss this?

Despite having a logistical mishap on the way and missing Hana Vu, I was in great spirits. Besides the amazing musical line up, that was one of the great joys of Here and There: Everyone was happy. There was no aggression from everyone, everyone was nice and polite to each other, and everyone was just thrilled to be there. Even in the photo pit the vibe was just chill and friendly. I overheard two young women saying they drove twelve hours to be there because they loved so many artists playing Saturday. The entire day was just a joyful celebration. I feel way too hippy dippy saying that, but it was beautiful.

The first artist I saw of the day was Bartees Strange. I hate admitting this, but I haven't exactly been a fan of his. His albums are fine, but I just haven't connected with them. Maybe it's just been too pop oriented for my personal taste, but seeing him perform live was a revelation. His live show had an edge that is missing on his albums and the performance was still pop but with a lot more indie rock to it. Plus, Strange is one of the most compelling performers I've seen in a long time. You just couldn't stop watching or getting sucked in by his performance. I definitely owe his albums another chance after Saturday.

Next up was supposed to be The Beths, but I had missed the news that Men I Trust had pulled out two hours before due to COVID. Instead of The Beths, out came Caroline Rose, one of my most beloved artists who I was disappointed wasn't playing the North Adams show. Nothing against Men I Trust, but this was an unexpected delight for me. Rose played a brief solo acoustic set, playing mostly new unreleased songs or old unreleased songs. She talked so much between songs that she joked it was more of her stand up set than her musical set, but she's so damn charming no one cared. No matter what she played, this was an unexpected delightful surprise for the day.

The Beths played next, and seeing them play in front of thousands of people was a huge difference from the last time I saw them at the eighty five person capacity Atwoods Tavern, but their show was still special. There's just something about The Beths' music that feels intimate, even at an outdoor festival show. They seemed to be the first band that the crowd was already pumped to see before they started playing, and if anyone wasn't already they were by the end. Their blend of indie pop rock is incredibly well suited to an outdoor festival in a gorgeous setting. Back when I saw them in 2018 I had commented that I was looking forward to seeing the chorus of "Little Death" sung by a field of people. I didn't quite get that at Here and There, but it was close enough.

Playing between The Beths and Lucy Dacus might have been the perfect timeslot for Faye Webster to play in. Her brand of ultra laid back retro hip pop chilled out the crowd without losing anyone's interest. Personally I was starving at this point, so for me it was the perfect soundtrack for grabbing some dinner on top of the hill while watching the sun set behind the stage. Webster has some die hard fans who treated every song like it was the most vital one on the planet. She definitely made some more fans that night.

I've said before that Lucy Dacus might have the most dedicated fans in music today, and Saturday proved that die hard fanbase continues to grow. As an artist gets bigger, they seem to attract more casual fans who like a few songs and are more there out of curiosity. Not with Dacus. Each new fan is just as die hard as the ones before. I haven't seen thousands of people as transfixed on a single performer like this since Tori Amos in the 90's. At this point in her career, Dacus' set was like a best of album. Songs like "VBS," "Hot & Heavy," "Brando," "Thumbs," "I Don't Wanna Be Funny Anymore," and the closer of "Night Shift" are all from just three albums released in just a five minute period. For a cover, she performed her recent dreamy cover of Cher's "Believe," and to close out the show "Night Shift" became a sing-a-long/shout-a-long for the thousands of people in attendance. Walking around the crowd after the set, I overheard a large number of people talking about just bursting into tears during "Night Shift," even people who had never heard it before. "Night Shift" is a gorgeous, moving song, but there was just something in Dacus' performance that night. It's very rare to think you just watched someone become a true star in one performance, but that's what Lucy Dacus did Saturday night.

Closing out the evening was festival curator Courtney Barnett. Playing after such amazing sets by Lucy Dacus, Faye Webster, and The Beths should have been a rough task, but Barnett nailed it. Her 90's style loud slacker indie rock was the perfect thing to keep a tired crowd going. Her entire vibe was completely different from anyone else playing. That was what worked best about Here and There: Every artist was completely different but they all fit perfectly together. Songs like "Avant Gardener," "Elevator Operator," and "Depreston" are just perfect live. Towards the end of her ninety minute set, Barnett was joined by Faye Webster for "An Illustration of Loneliness (Sleepless in New York)" and then by Bartees Strange for "Pedestrian at Best" and "Nobody Really Cares if You Don't Go to the Party." It was an epic set of music for sure.

What might have summed up the night perfectly happened after the concert ended. Courtney Barnett walked off to Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance with Somebody," and while the majority of the crowd started filing out, hundreds of indie rock fans danced wildly to the music in the field without a trace of irony. Just music fans celebrating a joyful day of music in the happiest way possible. And that's what Here and There was all about.

The Beths - "Expert in a Dying Field"

When The Beths released "Silence is Golden" last month, we noted that it was their most rock song to date. On their latest, "Expert in a Dying Field," the New Zealand band get quite a bit quieter. This new song stops short of being a power ballad, but just barely. There is still plenty of crunching guitars and noise to keep this from being a pure pop song, but "Expert in a Dying Field" has far more harmony for it to be pure indie rock. It's filled with plenty of reverb and crashing drums, but this is a gorgeous song. It's rare for a song to be this delicate but yet still rock this hard, but The Beths somehow pull this off.

Elizabeth Stokes says of the new song:

"I really do believe that love is learned over time. In the course of knowing a person you accumulate so much information: their favorite movies, how they take their tea, how to make them laugh, how that makes you feel. And when relationships between people change, or end, all that knowledge doesn’t just disappear. The phrase ‘Expert in a Dying Field’ had been floating around my head for a few years, I was glad to finally capture it when writing this tune.”

You can watch the video for "Expert in a Dying Field" below. Expert in a Dying Field, the album, is due out September 16 on Carpark Records and can be pre-ordered here. For more on The Beths, check out the artist's website. Upcoming tour date are below the video.

The Beths - "Silence is Golden"

We absolutely loved The Beths's 2018 album Future Me Hates Me. Its blend of pop tinged indie rock is kind of one of our sweet spots here, and no one nailed it quite like they did. 2020's Jump Rope Gazers leaned a little more towards pop, and was still fantastic. Now, the New Zealanders are back with a new song that changes up their sound a bit more. "Silence is Golden" straight up rocks. Indie rock doesn't usually rock out this hard, but we couldn't be more here for it. It's an oddly hypnotic swirl of guitars and includes a guitar solo that sounds like got completely loose and away from them, but they kept it on anyway. And The Beths pull all this off along with staying as poppy and fun as they've always been!

You can watch the video for "Silence is Golden" below. Expert in a Dying Field is due out September 16 on Carpark Records. For more on The Beths, check out the band's website.

The Beths - "A Real Thing"

We're huge fans of The Beths here, and I assume you are, too. The New Zealand band have this absolutely flawless mix of indie rock and indie pop. It reminds me a ton of some of my favorite mid 90's power pop, but amped up and bouncier, in the best possible way. They just released a new single, "A Real Thing," and it's exactly what we want from The Beths. It's filled with fuzzed out guitars and catchy hooks and is just a pure joy to listen to, despite its subject matter.

Liz Stokes explains the inspiration of her band's new song:

“‘A Real Thing’ is a kind of anxiety dream. It's a bit muddled, a bit frantic, a bit sinister. It's what came out of my guitar in late 2020, post NZ election (and U.S. election). I was limply reaching for optimism about the future, but was really just marinating in dread. In NZ people sometimes use tyres and cement to build retaining walls by the water, to try to stop the land being eroded away as the sea encroaches. It doesn't really work."

You can watch the video for "A Real Thing" below. The song is currently available as a single here. For more on The Beths, check out the band's website. Current tour dates are below the video.

Ken's Best of 2020 - #7: The Beths - Jump Rope Gazers

To say that we were huge fans of The Beths' 2018 album Future Me Hates Me is an understatement. It was the only album both of us chose for our top 10's at the end of that year. Does that mean that I didn't enjoy Jump Rope Gazers as much. I don't think so. Future Me Hates Me benefitted from the excitement of discovering a new band that I truly love, plus I was able to see them live that year, so I was still riding high off of how great that collection of songs was live. Jump Rope Gazers is truly a great album. It's filled with these great upbeat alt-rock/pop songs with a fantastic sense of humor and impossibly catchy hooks. If you loved Future Me Hates Me, you already love this album, too. And if you haven't listened yet, you truly need to as soon as humanly possible.

Songs of note: "I'm Not Getting Excited," "Dying to Believe," "Out of Sight," and "Don't Go Away"

First Listen: New Releases for 10 July

Artist: Kalen and Aslyn
Album: Back of Our Minds
Quick Description: Gorgeous rootsy folk.
Why You Should Listen: One of many male/female folk duos, but they're the real deal.
Overall Thoughts: Ken sent this over to me, and I'm glad he did, because this was super beautiful in so many ways. The songs are fairly straightforward, but the production value feels just right and the tone of this so surprisingly pleasant. We've had a few winners as of late with these folk duos, and I'm glad this hit my radar.
Recommendation: Absolutely worth the time.

Artist: TJO/Tara Jane O'Neil
Album: Songs for Peacock
Quick Description: A minimalist electronic mixtape.
Why You Should Listen: Tara Jane O'Neil has done a lot of great music so far.
Overall Thoughts: Her first big release under the TJO moniker, this is a covers album with a lot of interesting... everything. As musically compelling as it is compelling in terms of the song choices being made, this is something that I really enjoyed even if it may be more a curiosity piece for many. I am always down for interesting covers, and this has plenty, and I'm glad it's in O'Neil's catalog.
Recommendation: Give this one a shot.

Artist: Gillian Welch and David Rawlings
Album: All the Good Times
Quick Description: Latest from the folk royalty.
Why You Should Listen: Welch and Rawlings rarely misstep.
Overall Thoughts: Another covers album, this one has plenty of what we expect from Welch and Rawlings along with some great takes on folk standards and important songs in the canon alike. No one sounds quite like them, for sure, but I am glad they're back for another round.
Recommendation: A must-listen.

Artist: Kestrels
Album: Dream or Don't Dream
Quick Description: Feels like you got transported to alt-rock radio circa 1994.
Why You Should Listen: It's better than just a hit of nostalgia.
Overall Thoughts: The first song I heard off this was the one that featured J. Mascis, so it's no surprise that the rest of the album sounds like it could have come from a band that opened for Dinosaur Jr. back in the day. Everything, from the guitars to the production, are spot on, and have that timeless quality to them. Anyone who comes from our era will love this.
Recommendation: Make time for it.

Artist: Margo Price
Album: That's How Rumors Get Started
Quick Description: Latest album from the country songstress.
Why You Should Listen: This album should cement her as one of the best current country singers going.
Overall Thoughts: Margo Price has always been great, and this album is absolutely no different in that regard. On her third album, the title track once again sets a nice tone before sending us off into a classic country journey. I loved it from the first few notes, and I loved the whole thing to the very end.
Recommendation: One of the best of the week.

Artist: Rufus Wainwright
Album: Unfollow the Rules
Quick Description: Indie-adjacent troubadour's latest.
Why You Should Listen: This may be his best effort in decades.
Overall Thoughts: I saw Rufus Wainwright a few times in concert back in the day, and I still think his best effort was his second one, Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk. While his cabaret-style musical presentation is one that hasn't worked 100% of the time, this album feels much more mature while still going back to the basics, and I feel like it's why the whole thing works so well. I wasn't sure I'd be into it, but this ended up being one of my favorites this week, and I'm hoping it has some real staying power.
Recommendation: Give this a shot.

Artist: The Beths
Album: Jump Rope Gazers
Quick Description: Long-awaited follow-up album by a blog favorite.
Why You Should Listen: No sophomore slump here.
Overall Thoughts: Too many times, a debut comes out that I just play to death, and then the second effort comes out and it just doesn't have that same feeling. Not so with The Beths, who have absolutely expanded their power pop palate a bit while still staying true to what set them apart to start. While I don't know what a jump rope gazer is, I know that this album doesn't have a misstep on it. Another solid listen this week.
Recommendation: Don't miss out on this one.

Artist: David Wax Museum
Album: Carpenter Bird: Revisited (10th Anniversary Edition)
Quick Description: A reissue of one of the band's early albums.
Why You Should Listen: It's a great album without the perks of the reissue.
Overall Thoughts: We don't generally talk about reissues at length here, but I'll make an exception for David Wax Museum, a band we love to death here. Carpenter Bird was probably the album that got Ken and I into the band to begin with, it has my second favorite DWM song ("I Have Wasted My Life"), and it's great how well this album holds up, especially with the shift in sound DWM has taken over the years. If you missed this the first time around, don't wait to listen.
Recommendation: Worth the revisit.

Artist: Riverby
Album: Smart Mouth
Overall Thoughts: I don't usually highlight the seven song releases anymore, but I had to make an exception for Riverby's new album release, which is a great slice of alt-rock that I didn't expect to get this week. Keep this on your radar, because Riverby should be much bigger than they are.
