Live Shows: Snapped Ankles, Gloin, and Muzzins, Crystal Ballroom at Somerville Theater, Somerville, MA 3/12/22

Crystal Ballroom is a fairly new venue that opened up within the Somerville Theater that seems to be more of a performance space than a live music venue. They've hosted concerts, but also burlesque and other performances. Based on what has been booked there, the promoters seem more concerned with art and quality than just getting a Sublime cover band once a month to sell the place out. This was very apparent on Saturday with the triple bill of Snapped Ankles, Gloin, and Muzzins.

We've written about Muzzins before, and they were the main reason I was in attendance for this show. Despite having only two songs out, the band had a pretty die hard fanbase show up for being a brand new band. The three piece led by Rayna Jhaveri were a perfect fit to open this triple bill of oddball bands, with their own sound taking pieces of alt-rock, electronic, funk, hip hop, jazz, and punk into one cohesive sound. Their stage presence belied their relative newness, and they played like a band that has been together for years. It was a fun thirty minute art/dance rock set that included a cover of Blondie's "Rapture" that I hope gets officially recorded. Plus, as great as the recorded version of "Electromagnetic" is, live it is an epic. This is a band you simply need to see if you just need a good time that can still stimulate your mind.

Gloin was the most straightforward rock act of the evening, but the hardest one to describe. They're a four piece noise rock band out of Toronto, but that hardly describes them. For their set on Saturday night, they combined the intense noise and aggression of bands like Sonic Youth, A Place to Bury Strangers, and And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead..., but with some metal thrash and funk. They are another band that are completely different live than recorded. On their EP Soft Monster they are restrained compared to their performance. Recorded they focus on the art, live they focus on the rock. It was a breakneck performance that seemed to get out of control from them at times, but they were always able to reign it in at the last minute.

Snapped Ankles came all the way from London. They're an electronic based post punk band that are made up of "forest folk... descended from the trees." Their identities were disguised by leafy and mossy masks (that could have been their real faces, being forest folk and all), their music is certainly not as organic as you would expect from forest folk. With three to four members playing some form of keyboard or electronic noise instrument throughout the set, they can best be described as dance music for people who can't dance. As they ripped through their headlining set, slowly but surely the audience went from chin stroking to full on awkward dance party. The front tree person wandered into the audience regularly, making it a true party of equals and less of a performance. They also may have busted out a cover of Peggy Lee's "Johnny Guitar," but I could be very wrong on that one.

Put all three of these bands on your Must See Live list. You are guaranteed to not be disappointed.

Ex-Hyena - "Sight Unseen"

I don't cover a lot of electronic music here at If It's Too Loud..., so when I do you know it's something special. The latest from Boston's Ex-Hyena is "Sight Unseen," and it's one of the more intriguing songs coming out of the city for a while. The song comes across like a dark and moody and very off kilter version of trip hop. While trip hop tends to be chill, "Sight Unseen" is anything but. Sure, it's a slow song, but this could never get played in the chill room of a rave. This song is almost orchestral in an anxiety inducing way. It's what would play in a dream where nothing was specifically coming to get you, but you knew something could at any moment. And I mean this all in the best possible way.

Reuben Bettsak of Ex-Hyena says of the new song:

“‘Sight Unseen’ is about how we fill our headspace with beautiful noise and music to combat thoughts of loneliness. The line ‘From our beds into the waves’ conjures up stormy dreams and memories. An ocean can be dangerous, dark, and beautiful at the same time. Love can be those things as well.”

You can listen to "Sight Unseen" below. Moon Reflections is due out June 24 on Brutal Resonance/Hush Club LTD. For more on Ex-Hyena, check out the band's Facebook.

Leyla McCalla Covers Caetano Veloso

We've been huge fans of Leyla McCalla and her unique perspective on traditional folk music for a while now. Her latest single moves into a direction that we aren't familiar with her: "You Don't Know Me" is almost a rock song in McCalla's hands. It features electric guitars and crashing drums and an impossibly infectious groove. This is by far McCalla's most mainstream sounding single, and it's great to hear an artist expand on their sound in this way. McCalla puts such heartfelt emotion into the song, which is a cover of Caetano Veloso's Tropicalismo original, it's impossible to not be moved by it.

In a Facebook post, Leyla McCalla says of her new single:

"'You Don't Know Me' was written by Caetano Veloso who is one of the architects of the Tropicalismo movement and one of my all time favorite creative heros. The song comes from Veloso's album, Transa, an album of stories that reflect his experience as an immigrant artist in exile from Brazil in the early 70s. The words of the song reflected so much the emotionality of the exile experience that it reminded me of Radio Haiti's journalists, many of whom were exiled in the United States intermittently throughout the 80s and 90s. When I recorded the song, there was a lot of rhetoric in the US media about the wall between the United States and Mexico and the line "there's nothing you can show me from behind the wall" resonated deeply in my mind. As we see the tragedy of war unfolding in the Ukraine, we are reminded that political persecution and the fight for free sovereign nations is still very much a part of our world. Haiti doesn't seem so far from Ukraine afterall."

You can listen to "You Don't Know Me" below. Breaking the Thermometer is due out May 6 on ANTI- Records, and can be pre-ordered here. For more on Leyla McCalla, check out the artist's website.

Faz Waltz - "Hot Cold Fever"

If it seems like we've been covering a ton of Italian bands lately, it's because there has just been so many killer bands out of that country we've been discovering the past few weeks. We've brought you music from Faz Waltz before, and if you have a certain fondness for classic rock 'n' roll, you're going to be all about "Hot Cold Fever." This new song is a tribute to early rock 'n' roll. It's an amped up song that hits all the spots from when the genre just started, albeit in a punk rock style. The song doesn't quite make the two minute mark, but doesn't leave you wanting for more. How could you, when all they need is one minute forty five seconds?

You can watch the video for "Hot Cold Fever" below. The song will be included on the band's upcoming ninth album, but for now you can pre-order it as a 7" on Surfin' Ki and Snap Records in Europe and Spaghetty Town Records in the US here. For more on Faz Waltz, check out the band's website.

Fantastic Negrito - "Oh Betty"

The latest single from Fantastic Negrito tells one hell of a story. It's about his seventh generation grandparents (Elizabeth "Betty" Gallimore and Grandfather Courage) who cohabitated in colonial Virginia in the 1750's despite the horrific laws against that. "Oh Betty" is a righteous song mixing blues, funk, and garage rock with an absolute punk edge. As someone who has been a fan of Fantastic Negrito for a while, "Oh Betty" is one of his finest songs. It keeps everything you loved about the blues rock that is done in his unique style and just amps it up. If you're late to the Fantastic Negrito bandwagon, there has never been a better time to jump on board!

You can watch the video for "Oh Betty" below. White Jesus Black Problems is due out June 3 and can be pre-ordered here. For more on Fantastic Negrito, check out the artist's website.

John Doe - "Never Coming Back"

Legendary L.A. punk band X always had a country/rockabilly side, and when John Doe has done solo music he has tended to go full on country/rockabilly. His upcoming solo album is made up of songs that take place in the 1890's, and the first single, "Never Coming Back," is going to be beloved by X fans. It has all the edge of anything Doe's band has done, but just a less in-your-face version of that sound. Maybe it's just Doe's iconic voice, but "Never Coming Back" sounds like a stripped down version of an X song. When one of your favorite punk legends announces a solo album, this is exactly what you want. It still sounds like what you've always loved from them, but doesn't just sound exactly like their band.

You can watch the video for "Never Coming Back" below. Fables in a Foreign Land is due out May 20 on Fat Possum, and can be pre-ordered here. For more on John Doe, check out the artist's website.

Honeyglaze - "Female Lead"

London's Honeyglaze's latest single hits a very sweet spot for me. "Female Lead" is that kind of song that borders on modern indie rock and folk, and leans towards the pop side of both. What really helps the song stand out is the inspiration of 60's girl groups. It's that sound that gives "Female Lead" a Big Thief meets Please Be Mine era Molly Burch. The sounding modern while acknowledging the past sound is simply irresistible for us.

Honeyglaze's Anouska Sokolow says of the band's new song:

"I was overwhelmed by the state of the world during the first lockdown and constantly being surrounded by bad news. It was a time when people were playing with changing their appearance and I felt incapable of writing anything of any actual importance so I decided to write about something as completely arbitrary as dying my hair. I was inspired by the song ‘Leader of the Pack’ by the Shangri-las  and the narrative heavy pop songs that were coming out of the Brill building during the 60s."

You can watch the video for "Female Lead" below. Honeyglaze's self-titled debut is due out April 29 on Speedy Wunderground, and can be pre-ordered here. For more on Honeygalze, check out the band's Facebook and Twitter.

The Chats - "Struck By Lightning"

A lot of punk today avoids the classic or more traditional sound. It can be a lot poppier or dance friendly. Australia's The Chats missed that memo and are sounding like classic punk on their new single. "Struck By Lightning" is loud and fast. The video is just over two minutes and the song is shorter than that. It's buzzsawing guitars, shouted vocals, and plenty of gang vocals. It reminds me of an amped up version of the Buzzcocks. There may be just the beginning traces of pop punk in here, but early punk was pretty poppy if you really listen to it.

Eamon Sandwith talks about his band's new song, which is about being struck by lightning:

People can't grow their hair back and shitIt’s weird – especially the whole no-eyebrows thing. That would be really scary! I'm really hoping that this doesn't happen to me, now I've written a song about it.

You can watch the video for "Struck By Lightning" below. For more on The Chats, check out the band's website. Upcoming tour dates are below the video.

La Casa Al Mare - "Otherwise"

It seems like the majority of shoegaze released lately has been of the more dream pop variety. It's been more mellow and dreamlike. Italy's La Casa Al Mare are here to change that. Their latest single, "Otherwise," is much faster than most shoegaze out there. It's not necessarily aggressive, just faster and noisier. It's also oddly catchy and upbeat for the genre, kind of like a merging of pop punk and shoegaze while staying firmly in the latter. "Otherwise" has that swirling guitar noise you need, but it has just a slight edge to it. And once the vocals drop out about halfway through and it just becomes a cylinder of noise spinning around you, that's when this song truly takes off.

You can watch the video for "Otherwise" below. The song is available as a single over at Bandcamp. For more on La Casa Al Mare, check out the band on Facebook and Twitter.

Girl Talk, Wiz Khalifa, Big K.R.I.T., and Smoke DZA - "Put You On"

The upcoming collaborative album between Girl Talk, Wiz Khalifa, Big K.R.I.T., and Smoke DZA started 2017 when Gregg Gillis (aka Girl Talk) started working with the other three artists separately. He started having the other artists collaborate on each other's songs and came up with the idea of all four making an album together. They all got together in Los Angeles and Full Court Press is the result of those sessions.

"Put You On" is the first single from the upcoming album. It's a laid back party song that shows off Girl Talk's cut and paste style production (although a bit toned down from his mixtapes) and gives each MC a chance to shine over some 70's soul. If you're familiar with Girl Talk, you're going to love this. If you're just a fan of great hip hop, you're also going to love this.

You can watch the video for "Put You On" below. Full Court Press is due out April 8 on Asylum/Taylor Gang.
