I absolutely adored Stay Safe!, the 2023 album from Montreal's La Sécurité. When you discover bands from nowhere near you, sometimes you resign yourself to never getting to see them live. After all, that album came out over a year ago and the band still hadn't made it to the Boston area. Once I saw they were playing The Sinclair opening for The Go! Team, I obviously had to go.
I didn't know what to expect with La Sécurité's live show. They play a version of dance punk that can easily go wrong live and is better as a studio creation. Instead, the songs off Stay Safe! were much more suited to the stage. Making their Boston area debut, the band played a high energy set that quickly won over the crowd. They play this bizarre mixture of indie rock meets punk combined with disco. The guitars in song like "Anyway" are somehow both indie and disco, which I didn't think could be possible. If you love to dance to music but feel you're too awkward, make sure you get out to a La Sécurité show. The music is just perfect for awkward dancing. Eliane Viens-Synnott may be the perfect dance punk frontperson. She was enigmatic as a frontperson and seemed to drive the fun atmosphere for their entire set. Let's hope they make it back to Boston sooner than later.
The Go! Team headlined the night, and were celebrating the twentieth anniversary of their breakthrough album Thunder, Lightning, Strike by playing the entire album. They are a nearly impossible band to categorize, but they play a mostly instrumental version of high energy dance meets indie rock with some cheerleading thrown in. Even before they took the stage, the crowd was thrilled to see them. The UK band draws a truly all ages crowd, with most seeming to be either in their early twenties or an older, NPR listening base. There was even one elementary school aged kid there. This might be the most unbridled fun I've ever seen a crowd have before, and The Sinclair was filled with people rocking out and dancing with no pretense.
