Hot Mustard is the instrumental jazz meets hip hop project that features Jordan Mclean (Antibalas), Dave "Smoota" Smith (TV on the Radio), and Matt Bauder (Father John Misty and Arcade Fire) on horns. The group's latest single, "Birdwatcher," continues what we loved about 2023's Seconds. The song sounds like it's pieced together from obscure jazz and soul samples from the 60's and 70's, but this is all fresh jazz. If you're one of those people that's never really been able to appreciate jazz but loves hip hop that samples jazz and soul classics, this is a great jumping on point. "Birdwatcher" is wonderfully creative and impossibly engaging.
Jack Powell (guitar) of Hot Mustard says of the band's latest single:
“It’s really just a simple allegory about getting caught up and losing sight of one’s passions; these things tend to unintentionally draw from deeply personal experience. For Hot Mustard, I try to strike a balance between ‘enjoyable to watch’ and ‘thought provoking’, ideally it invokes some kind of introspection, but doesn’t necessarily demand it. That’s the vibe of the Hot Mustard music for me, the deepness is in there but it’s not always in your face.”
You can watch the video for "Birdwatcher" below. Monster Season is due out in Spring 2025. For more on Hot Mustard, check out the band on Facebook.
