Grampfather - "Hot Dog Beach"

Image
Grampfather just released an album back in February and they're already back at it with new music. "Hot Dog Beach" comes out just in time to capitalize on our need for summer themed music. There is a little bit of a 60's surf/beach vibe with the song, but that could just be the psychedelia sneaking through. While songs off Gramppappies  had more of a post punk psychedelia, "Hot Dog Beach" is more groovy and sounds like a fuzzed out track off a Nuggets compilation. But, hey... a song called "Hot Dog Beach" has to be fun, right? You can listen to "Hot Dog Beach" below. 666G is due out August 19, and can be pre-ordered via Bandcamp . Grampfather - "Poppies"

Kingston, NY's Grampfather still have one of my favorite band names I've heard in a while. The band's newest single, "Poppies," is a psychedelic jam rooted in other genres like post punk and jangle pop. Any song called "Poppies" has to have a little psychedelia in it, but Grampfather keep this from sounding too jammy. It has this hypnotic vibe along with jangly guitars and some of the dark feel of post punk. This is a catchy and fun song mixing genres you'd think shouldn't be mixed but these four guys pull it off wonderfully. James Kwapisz of Grampfather says about the new song: "I wrote the main riff for this song a few years back, but I wasn't quite sure what to do with it until I connected it with the chord progression in the second half of the song. I liked the poppy vibe of it, so I just named the song file 'Poppy song,' which then became "Poppies, drawing a connection to the title of the album, Gramppappies. The first ...

Grampfather - "Murder Hornets"

Normally I might balk at a song called "Murder Hornets" as it's an already dated title, but when the band is named Grampfather I have to at least give it a shot, right? "Murder Hornets" starts off as a relatively mellow psychedelic slice of hard rock. It's heavy in a more mainstream version of The Stooges' freak out tracks. And then the song just takes off with almost no warning. It's turns into this thrash meets psychedelic sound with some blues thrown in. It's a little bit of a mess and kinda sloppy at times, but that is not a bad thing in this case at all. "Murder Hornets" is one of the most unexpectedly exciting songs I've heard in a while. James Kwapisz of Grampfather says of "Murder Hornets": "I wrote 'Murder Hornets' as a follow-up to our 2020 album 'Magnum Grampus,' our thrash album. What with the pandemic and all the blaring social injustices that came to define 2020, the news of incoming murd...
