mary in the junkyard - "Blood"

Image
Photo by Xander Lewis Our most anticipated new album of this week comes from mary in the junkyard, and now the London band have a new single out to help satiate our desire for the new album. "Blood" is a dreamlike indie rock track that sees vocalist Clari Freeman-Taylor showing off her speak-singing abilities. The song is hypnotizing, with fantastic guitarwork to fully suck you in. It's an almost ramblin' kind of song, or at least as ramblin' as you can get with indie and alt-rock. It's almost an epic, if it wasn't just a tiny bit too mellow to hit the epic mark. I've been a huge fan of mary in the junkyard since I first heard "marble arch" in 2024, and "Blood" could end up being my favorite from them. You can watch the video for "Blood" below. Role Model Hermit is due out July 3 on AMF Records, and is available for pre-order here . For more on mary in the junkyard, check out the band on Instagram . Upcoming tour dates are...

Blood - "One Dimensional Man"

Image
Photo by Morgan Kelley In the winter of 2021, Blood moved from Austin, TX to Philadelphia. There the band recorded their debut album, which is set to be released in August. The first single from that album is "One Dimensional Man," and if you have an affinity for certain musical styles from the 90's, you're going to love this one. To me "One Dimensional Man" sounds like a cross between Jeff Buckley and Radiohead's first two albums. It's quiet and intimate while also being an epic song. It's a melodic song with a ton of jangly pop thrown in, and it's undeniably infectious. Although, when a song is as great as "One Dimensional Man," you don't mind it being lodged in your head for an extended period of time. You can watch the video for "One Dimensional Man" below. Loving You Backwards is due out August 2 on Ramp Local, and is available for pre-order here . For more on Blood, check out the band on Instagram .

Juliana Hatfield - "Gorgon"

Image
Photo by David Doobinin Juliana Hatfield has been giving us top notch alt-rock/singer-songwriter songs for decades at this point. She's carved out this perfect little niche for herself, so it's always great when she moves out of her comfort space a little. Her latest single, "Gorgon," shows she learned a few things while working on her Olivia Newton-John covers album. According to a press release, the song is about "... a non-compliant, discontented woman who escapes from the chains of love..." While that sounds like it would make a great riot grrrl song (and it definitely could), Hatfield makes it a groovy near disco anthem. It's laid back and synth heavy, but still fits perfectly into what we've come to expect from a Juliana Hatfield song. Juliana Hatfield says of theh song: “... it was fun building it up from scratch and then letting it all hang loose in the long free-pop/jazz outro. Recording at home, there’s no one stopping me from indulging in ...

Juliana Hatfield - "Mouthful of Blood"

Image
Photo by David Doobinin Juliana Hatfield has been shockingly prolific as of late. She's been averaging a new album every year since 2017, and she's set to release a new album in May. The first single from that album, "Mouthful of Blood," is going to be adored by anyone who's even had a passing interest in Hatfield over the past three decades. "Mouthful of Blood" is both gritty and melodic. It truly sounds like it could be from any period of Hatfield's career. The song has the edge of her 90's releases while keeping the mature side of her more recent work.  Hatfield explains the songs on the new album:  “I think these songs are a reaction to how seriously and negatively a lot of people have been affected by the past four years. But it’s fun, musically. There’s a lot of playing around. I didn’t really have a plan when I started this project.” You can listen to "Mouthful of Blood" below. Blood  is due out May 14 on American Laundromat Reco...
