Arny Margret - "In a Dream"

Image
Photo by  Guðm Kristinn Jonsson Iceland's Arny Margret is following up her excellent 2025 album I Miss You, I Do  with a brand new single. "In a Dream" is a warm and lush track that edges right up to the mainstream world of singer-songwriters while keeping a fresh and unique sound that is all Margret. As with any of Margret's releases, this latest single isn't redefining singer-songwriter or folk music, but she is perfecting it. I feel like every song or album she puts out seems the one that will launch her into superstardom, and this is no exception for that. When an artist is as compelling as Margret with such gigantic crossover potential, it's just a matter of time. There's no gatekeeping an artist this fantastic, and so deserved of being the next big thing. Arny Margret says of her latest single: “I wrote this song on New Year’s Eve, just sitting in my room with my cat while fireworks were going off outside. It’s mostly about me wanting to become the w...

Arny Margret - "I Love You"

Image
We've been raving about Arny Margret since 2021. Each single has sounded like it could be the one to finally break the Icelandic singer-songwriter to a huge audience. "I Love You" might be the one to finally do it. The song isn't quite folk-pop, but it's a folk and singer-songwriter track that has huge pop crossover potential. Margret isn't redefining the genre with this new song, but she is perfecting it. Plus, there are little bursts of interesting and unexpected instrumentation to keep even the grumpiest of music snobs rapt. With "I Love You," Margret's voice is what will pull you in, and the rest of the musical flourishes in the song are just an added delight. Arny Margret says of her latest single: “I wrote ‘I Love You’ for my mom. I went to visit her after I hadn’t seen her for a long time, I didn’t realise I missed her until I met her again. It’s about her and her childhood home, the farm she grew up on, it’s a song for her. It’s a song I ...

Arny Margret - "Day Old Thoughts"

Image
Photo by  Guðm. Kristinn Jónsson As blown away as we were by Arny Margret's 2022 debut album, judging by the singles for its follow up, she might be set to conquer the musical world. "Day Old Thoughts" continues the Icelandic artist's move towards a more mainstream folk pop sound in the best possible way. Of all of the singles released off I Miss You, I Do , this one is somehow the least and most mainstream. The sound moves in and out of folk territory at will, and is truly a showcase for Margret's vocals. The song has some of the most gorgeous and lush guitar work, and despite not following the more traditional aspects of folk, is quite compelling in its simplicity. Arny Margret says of her upcoming album: “The main thing I wanted for this album was for it to be different. When I listen to the last one, I feel like it's mainly about me and the guitar. It's very stripped back. I wanted to do more - I love the banjo, the fuller sound, I love the American so...

Arny Margret - "Happy New Year"

Image
Photo by  Kristinn Jónsson On her last single, "I Miss You, I Do," Iceland's Arny Margret was experimenting with folk pop. That's not the case with "Happy New Year." This new song may skirt the mainstream of folk pop, but it's a much more stripped down and melancholy song. "Happy New Year" is gorgeous and gets more lush as the song goes on, but it's more along the lines of being more experimental and singer-songwriter. It's interesting to hear a song that incorporates all of of these sonic elements without overdoing it. Arny Margret is the rare artist that can pull this off, and we're dying to hear more of what she's up to sooner than later. Arny Margret says of her latest single: “This one is about Christmas and New Year. New Year’s Eve has never been the best time of year for me, I’ve always felt like it’s a sad and dark time...there’s probably a lot of people out there that can connect to that.”  You can listen to "Happ...

Arny Margret - "I Miss You, I Do"

Photo by  Guðm. Kristinn Jónsson Iceland's Arny Margret is back with a new single off an upcoming album. If you loved her 2022 album they only talk about the weather , you're going to be into the first single, "I Miss You, I Do" even with a slight change in sound. While Margret's previous album was a more stripped down version of folk, this new song has a more full and lush sound to it. The album was produced by Josh Kaufman, who has also produced for Bonny Light Horseman. I only mention that since "I Miss You, I Do" shares some sonic traits with Kaufman's work with that band, including the intimate qualities and stunning beauty. Margret's latest may be more mainstream than her previous release, but it never falls into folk pop territory. This is a great evolution for one of our favorite young artists. Arny Margret says of her latest single:  “I wanted to have a good song to take with me, so I wrote it in my pyjamas in the Airbnb I was staying at...

Arny Margret - "waiting"

Image
Photo by Keiko Icihara The latest single from Arny Margret may be the one that causes the Icelandic singer/songwriter to finally explode. "waiting" is a straightforward modern folk song. This might be the most mainstream Margret has sounded, and I mean that in a great way. "waiting" still sounds like her very own blend of singer/songwriter material, but this is just about as great as the genre gets. This one is sure to pull anyone in based on just the strength of her voice, and then the bare instrumentation will just hold you there. "waiting" keeps just enough of the more odd side of the genre to keep music snobs happy, but this song is just simply spectacular.  Arny Margret says of her latest single: “ The song is about always feeling like you’re waiting for someone, or a moment to say something, but the person doesn’t really see or give you the time .  It’s about that feeling of saying to someone ‘Hello, I’m here’ but they don’t notice. It’s another wher...

Arny Margret - "i went outside"

Image
Photo by Keiko Ichihara Iceland's Arny Margret is just one of those artists that is impossibly compelling. Her latest single, "i went outside," skirts the mainstream of modern folk-pop, but eschews it in favor of her very own sound. As with any of her songs, "i went outside" focuses on Margret's vocals, which are charming and lovely in the way that virtually any listener is going to become a fan. This is a song that initially feels simple, but the deeper you listen, the more you'll hear going on. There is unexpected instrumentation and sounds throughout that add to how lush the song feels without taking away from Margret's vocals and lyrics. The more often and the more intently you listen, the more you'll be rewarded. Arny Margret says of her upcoming EP: “The EP is different than anything I’ve done. I push my voice more, I even scream at one point. The title track is the first song I've ever actually written broadly on piano. One of the trac...

Arny Margret - "akureyri"

Image
Photo by Benni Valsson Last month we brought you the debut single from Iceland's Arny Margret. We said that it was "... perfectly familiar despite not sounding quite like anyone else." She just released a second single, and "akureyi" keeps that sound going perfectly. Margret sounds like your favorite acoustic singer/songwriters that don't quite fit into folk but are maybe a little bit folk, but she just has this wonderfully unique vocal delivery. It's warm and welcoming while keeping you at a little bit of a distance. According to a press release, the new song is "... about how you judge yourself unfairly through the eyes of those that would put you down," which could explain the overall vibe of the song. You can watch the video for "akureyri" below. intertwined is due out February 25 on One Little Independent, and can be pre-ordered/pre-saved here . Arny Margret - "intertwined"

Image
Photo by Guðmundur Kristinn Jónsson Iceland's Arny Margret has just released her debut single. "intertwined" is a gorgeous song that straddles the line between singer/songwriter and folk. It's composed of Margret's vocals and acoustic guitar. The song is stunning in its simple beauty. Margret has this instantly compelling vocal style that feels perfectly familiar despite not sounding quite like anyone else. "intertwined" is a mesmerizing debut single that is going to have you rushing to all of Margret's socials to make sure you don't miss a follow up. Arny Margret says of her new single: “Past experiences kept coming back to me while I was alone, and all these feelings mixed with the weather and the trees somehow. I dreamt about these things, and I came up with the lyric ‘our pasts are intertwined,’ as if you’re connected to someone even if you don’t want to be.”  You can listen to "intertwined" below. The song is available as a single ...
