MOURN - "This Feeling is Disgusting"

Image
No band makes us feel quite as old as Spain's MOURN. We're probably (definitely) old enough to be every member of the band's dads, but how are we supposed to resist a song like "This Feeling is Disgusting?" It's a two minute burst of pure noisy power pop. Fuzzy and jangly guitars combine into this perfect song that combines 90's indie rock with punk and pop. Plus, the ever so slightly off tune vocals and the shouted gang vocals just pull the entire thing together. If that still doesn't sell you on the joy of MOURN, according to their Bandcamp profile their influences include PJ Harvey, Sebadoh, Sleater Kinney, and Patti Smith. You simply can't go wrong with that. You can listen to "This Feeling is Disgusting" below. Self Worth , the upcoming album from MOURN, is due out on October 30. You can pre-order a copy via the band's Bandcamp . For more on MOURN, check out their Facebook . Self Worth by MOURN

A slower week, but one with some pretty impactful releases. Album of the Week : Artist : V. V. Lightbody Album : Bathing Peach Quick Description : Debut solo project from a Chicago-area singer-songwriter. Why You Should Listen : You wish Lucy Dacus would tone it down a bit? Overall Thoughts : This is an album that is a little hard to describe. It's kind of folky, but has some edge to it? The project of Vivian McConnell, she clearly has some great songwriting chops that make you pay attention from the first few notes, and this kind of came out of nowhere for me in terms of how much I liked it. If you like the folky stuff, or even the more contemplative singer-songwriter efforts of late, you should give this a listen. Recommendation : Best release of the week. Artist : The Carters Album : Everything is Love Quick Description : Surprise-yet-anticipated collaboration between Beyonce and Jay-Z. Why You Should Listen : Love it or hate it, this is what people will be tal...

Mourn Covers The Replacements

This has been a very covers heavy week at If It's Too Loud..., but we consider that to be a great thing. Barcelona's garage punk band Mourn have a new EP coming out today (maybe?), and it features a version of The Replacements' "Color Me Impressed." Mourn's version somehow does two seemingly separate things at once: It's both noisier and more poppy. It might be since while there is a lot more noise behind the song, it's a far more produced and polished version than the original. Plus, they speed it up just a bit more. It keeps the song their own while still being true to the original. Sure, it may not have the same raw power as The Replacements version, but this one is just pure pop punk fun. You can hear Mourn's cover of "Color Me Impressed" below. You can pick up your own copy of their new EP, Over the Wall , here . For more on Mourn, check them out on Facebook . Over The Wall by MOURN

First Listen, Part Two: More New Releases for June 3

Here are the rest of the releases for the week! Artist : Tegan and Sara Album : Love You to Death Quick Description : Newest album by the twin sisters. Why You Should Listen : Tegan and Sara have been consistently great for a long time now, and this album is no different. Overall Thoughts : Tegan and Sara have been mixing it up lately, and the synth-heavy pop rock of their previous album leads way to the logical progression of Love You to Death , which embraces that aesthetic quite well while having some definite Carly Rae-style hooks throughout. It's a very modern pop record in a lot of ways, and that isn't a bad thing unless you're really missing the "Time Running" days of over a decade ago. Definitely a solid listen this week. Recommendation : Worth your time, quite good. Artist : Kino Kimono Album : Bait is for Sissies Quick Description : Indie singer-songwriter stuff with involvement from members of Sonic Youth. Why You Should Listen : The nam...

First Listen: New Releases for February 17

It's rare to have a week without any real clunkers, so enjoy! Suz Slezak - When the Nighttime Comes : We've covered this album in more depth than anything else at this blog , so I don't think there's a lot new to say per se, but given that this was my first time listening to it, I was surprised at how much more I liked it than I thought I would have. For an album that's designed, at least in part, to be lullabies for little ones, it's actually a really pretty folk album that reminds me of the earlier Hem albums from long ago. Definitely the release of the week. Damon & Naomi - Fortunes : In a different week without the Slezak album, this would have really blown me away. Instead, we get a really solid folk-style quiet album meant to be a companion to a short film by Naomi , so listening to it independently might miss the point. Overall, though, a really good listen. Elle King - Love Stuff : I won't lie - everything I read about this had me hopi...
