Mightmare - "Enemy"

Image
Photo by Jillian Clark Mightmare, Sarah Shook's dark pop/indie rock project, has a new single we can check out. As with previous singles, "Enemy" is a complete change of musical direction that we're used to from Sarah Shook & The Disarmers. This is a dark and brooding song that somehow still ends up being more than a little bit pop. There's an interesting 90's alt-rock goes goth and modern alt-pop vibe with "Enemy." We've been huge fans of the Disarmers and everything they've put out, and while this is completely different it's great to see an artist like Sarah Shook branch out into an entirely new sound, especially when it's this great. Sarah Shook says of their new song: “When I started working on ‘Enemy’ I was thinking about how people can be so vindictive during breakups and how pointless it is. It got me wondering if a breakup somehow triggers something deeper in us psychologically, like a fundamental fear of being forgotten ...

Mightmare - "Easy"

Photo by Jillian Clark While the previous single from Mightmare, the indie rock/dark pop project from Sarah Shook, was decidedly more indie rock, their latest single lean much harder into pop. "Easy" is a laid back indie pop song. It's relatively bare bones in the world of pop, and much more synth heavy than anything we've heard from Shook previously. It kind of sounds like an unreleased demo from one of your favorite 80's synth bands, recorded while they were just writing the song and before the huge hit sound was built into it. Of course, "Easy" is much more polished than a demo, but it has that stripped down and laid back vibe. Sarah Shook says of their new single and video: “[The single] is easily the most lighthearted song I've written. I felt like anime was the perfect way to tease the innocence and agony of exploring a new love interest.” You can watch the video for "Easy" below. Cruel Liars is due out October 14 on Kill Rock Stars, ...

Mightmare - "Saturn Turns"

Photo via Facebook We absolutely adore Sarah Shook & the Disarmers here. Outlaw country/country punk is one of our favorite genres, and they might be our favorite artist in the genre today. If you had asked me if I thought Sarah Shook should release an indie rock side project, I would have thought that was a crazy idea, but now that I know that it exists I need to hear it. Their new project is called Mightmare, and the debut single is "Saturn Turns." The song isn't your traditional noisy indie rock song. It's more along the lines of modern indie rock or dark pop, maybe even a little New Wave. It's an exquisitely moody song that sounds nothing like what you'd expect to hear from Shook. Most of Shook's trademark twang is (mostly) gone when they're singing in this style. If you've been a fan of Sarah Shook & the Disarmers and have an open mind, you're going to love this one. And if you've never quite gotten into their country sound, yo...
