Monday Mix (and more!): The Roadhouse Is Proud to Welcome... Music and Twin Peaks!

Image
The finale of Twin Peaks: The Return was two weeks ago and my brain is still busted wide open from the entire series. No television show has exercised my brain the way The Return did, and the mysteries that were solved during the season being replaced by new ones has just kept me so engaged in the entire mythology of the Peaks universe up to this point that I see no signs of stopping. I am looking for books that are like Twin Peaks , shows that will somehow fill the orb-shaped void inside of me. While the music of the original series is iconic in its own right, The Return stepped up in an interesting and unexpected way. While the series itself played around considerably both with ethereal whooshing soundscapes and the use of silence, most episodes ended with a scene in the bar, where the music venue, "The Roadhouse," was hosting all sorts of indie artists. It was almost a game in and of itself to see who would be featured along the way. Also related were some of...

Flesh World - "Into the Shroud"

Image
Photo by Roxanne Clifford The new song from Flesh World is punk, but not quite a style of punk we've seen before. "Into the Shroud" is not really hard or heavy. Instead, it combines elements of some of the most popular retro genres to borrow from currently. It has the quirky, slightly off beats of post punk, plus the drone and monotone style of shoegaze, and then the jangle of dream pop. That doesn't exactly sound like a blend that would make for punk, but it somehow mixes together just that way. Not to mention that the entire thing reeks of England, but the band resides in California. You can watch the video for "Into the Shroud" below. It might just be me, but the video seems very Information Society. The new album from Flesh World, also called Into the Shroud , will be out September 8 on Dark Entries Records. It can be pre-ordered here . For more on Flesh World, check them out on Facebook .

A very interesting week. This will be quicker than normal, though. Album of the Week : Artist : Rayland Baxter Album : Imaginary Man Quick Description : Well-crafted Americana/folk music. Why You Should Listen : When Ken praised two of the songs on this album, he wasn't kidding - the rest of the album is just as good. Overall Thoughts : Seriously, I can't say enough good things about this album. Whether it's an album of the year candidate remains to be seen, but it's a pretty perfect piece of work and I've listened to a lot of folk music this year. Recommendation : If you listen to one album this week, make it this one. Artist : FKA Twigs Album : M3LL155X Quick Description : New EP by strange off-center artist FKA Twigs Why You Should Listen : You liked her previous album; you enjoy challenging music. Overall Thoughts : I mean, it's an FKA Twigs EP, so you know what you're getting. It's weird and different and it deserves a lot of tim...
