Miesha and The Spanks - "Fight My Body"

Image
Photo by Sebastian Buzzalino It's been a few years since we've brought you any new music from Miesha and The Spanks, but now the Calgary band are back with a new single. "Fight My Body" keeps their modern day garage rock sound but adds in more than a little bit of a pop sound in. This is still a full out rock song, it's just as catchy as a pop song can get. It's a fun and uplifting song despite (or because of?) the subject matter. "Fight My Body" is the perfect rock song to pogo or full out dance to. Somehow Miesha and The Spanks have added pop to their garage rock style and come out with something a little extra punk. Miesha Louie says of her latest single: "Fight My Body  is a lament to the frustrations of fighting with ones’ body, trying to fit how we see ourselves or maybe want to be seen. For myself - I barely remember a time I wasn’t on some sort of diet, spending my childhood up to 13 in ballet. It also replays my relationship with my bod...

Miesha & The Spanks - "Dig Me Out"

Image
As we would expect, the latest from Calgary's Miesha & The Spanks is a fiery, amped up version of modern garage rock. However, the song has a much deeper meaning than just being a kick ass rock song. On the YouTube description for "Dig Me Out," Miesha Louie explains: "Last year the remains of 215 children were found at the site of the old T’kemlups Residential School. When the news came out it was everywhere fast. A lot of people in Canada didn’t know about Residential Schools because it wasn’t taught in our schools, or at least, not the truth. I remember sitting in class when they briefly came up in social studies, saying that they taught kids how to speak English, read, write, basically helped them adjust to modern society. Like most Indigenous kids I already knew the history of abuse that came with the assimilation these schools offered, designed to 'kill the Indian,' where it often succeeded. I saw it first hand reflected in the generational suffering...

Miesha & The Spanks - "I Want Fire"

Image
Calgary's Miesha & The Spanks have quickly become one of our favorite proto punk/garage rockers. The band took a bit of a break since their last album while Miesha Louie had twins (congrats!), but are back to bring their brand of rock to the masses. "I Want Fire" is a huge rock song. The obvious comparisons are going to be The White Stripe and The Devil's Twins, and those are indeed apt. It's also going to remind you of more classic bands like the MC5 and the Runaways. Miesha & The Spanks are in good company with those. "I Want Fire" is a rock song with killer riffs, pounding guitars, and growling vocals from Louie that are a near religious experience.  You can watch the video for "I Want Fire" below. Singles , the new EP from Miesha & The Spanks, will be out April 16. For more on Miesha & The Spanks, check out the band on Facebook and Twitter .

Miesha & the Spanks - "Wanna Feel Good"

Image
I've always been a fan of classic garage rock, which is why I'm always obsessed with anything that Miesha & the Spanks put out. The Calgary based duo have a new single out. "Wanna Feel Good" may not be purely classic 60's or 70's style garage rock, but fans of the more vintage side of the genre will find plenty to love here. Miesha Louie's vocals are just dripping with attitude, the song is filled with an attack of fuzzed out (and somehow slinky?) guitars, and Sean Hamilton is pounding his drums like his life depends on it. Punk infused garage rock is a standard in the genre these days, but "Wanna Feel Good" also injects a healthy dose of classic metal into garage punk, which I don't think anyone can argue with. You can listen to "Wanna Feel Good" below. Singles EP , the upcoming release from Miesha & the Spanks, will be out March 2021. Miesha & The Spanks - "Unstoppable"

Image
Miesha & The Spanks are a rock duo from Calgary. Due to Miesha recently having twins and... you know... 2020... they're slowly recording their follow up to 2018's Girls Girls Girls. The first single from their upcoming EP is out, and "Unstoppable" is a rock 'n' roll rager. It's a little too polished to be garage rock, and it's not huge enough to be an arena anthem. Instead, "Unstoppable" lives in the sweet spot between lo-fi indie garage rock and huge sounding rock while still having elements of both. This is just straight up big sounding garage rock that even the snobbiest of music fans won't be able to help but enjoy. You can listen to "Unstoppable" below. Singles , the upcoming EP from Miesha & The Spanks will be out March 2021 (which is probably not a bad idea to wait nearly a year to release anything right now). Miesha & The Spanks - "The Girls Are O.K."

Image
Photo by Unfolding Creative Photography Hailing from Calgary, Miesha & The Spanks have a new pop garage rock single, "The Girls Are O.K." It's a great mixture of the dirty sound of garage rock and the shimmering sound of pop. It's a fun, celebratory song that reminds me of Carissa Johnson & the Cure-Alls. According to Miesha: "I wrote “ The Girls Are O.K.”  while in my third trimester this summer, expecting twins— no idea what their gender would be. At the same time I was scheduling this year’s Girls Rock Camp in Calgary. The whole thing got me thinking about these strong, weird, cool girls that I get to work with every year and watch grow, and how if I ended up with two baby girls, I wouldn’t be worried about or for them at all, because the girls from camp were already light years ahead of where I was at their age. They’re so brave and they already know they don’t have to take any bullshit— something I learned much later in life. They...
