Joelton Mayfield - "Turpentine (You Know the One)"

Photo by Tyler Squires It might sound like an odd stretch, but listening to the latest from Joelton Mayfield's latest single was thrilling. "Turpentine (You Know the One)," starts off as this ramblin' style alt-country song that opens with a line reminiscent of the Wilco classic "The Late Greats," but that appears to be on purpose. The track then morphs briefly into something heavier that isn't quite metal but isn't not metal, and now the lyrics seem to be Tenacious D inspired. This is absolutely killer alt-country, and it feels like we've been in an alt-country drought lately. "Turpentine (You Know the One)" is a fun and creative burst of music that will remind you of why you started loving the genre in the first place. Joelton Mayfield - "Speechwriter"

Photo by Tyler Squires It's been a while since we've heard anything as classically alt-country as the latest from Joelton Mayfield. The Texas native and currently Nashville based artist just released "Speechwriter," which is filled with all the twang you could possibly want with a ton of indie rock noise sprinkled throughout. Mayfield also has a strong sense of pop songwriting. The song could have been an amazing singer-songwriter track with a pop leaning based on his voice, and we would have still enjoyed it and happily brought it to you. But with the alt-country edges and noise that drops in unexpectedly, "Speechwriter" turned out to be one of the best songs we've heard this summer.
