Joelton Mayfield - "Turpentine (You Know the One)"

It might sound like an odd stretch, but listening to the latest from Joelton Mayfield's latest single was thrilling. "Turpentine (You Know the One)," starts off as this ramblin' style alt-country song that opens with a line reminiscent of the Wilco classic "The Late Greats," but that appears to be on purpose. The track then morphs briefly into something heavier that isn't quite metal but isn't not metal, and now the lyrics seem to be Tenacious D inspired. This is absolutely killer alt-country, and it feels like we've been in an alt-country drought lately. "Turpentine (You Know the One)" is a fun and creative burst of music that will remind you of why you started loving the genre in the first place.

Joelton Mayfield says of his latest single:

“A majority of the songs on the album interrogate hope in some capacity—where it can be found, what can produce it, what will work as a stand-in—but ‘Turpentine’ shrugs off the questions for a moment. Despite the roadblocks identified in the opening verses—how hard it is to keep a band alive, choosing to make art when you have to pay rent, or the often discouraging and ever-soulless state of most popular music—new is still possible, a desire to create is still within. If that desire continues to exist, after all that’s been done in the silly little world of singing songs and playing guitars, then ‘Turpentine’ concludes you might as well acknowledge the absurdity, name the bullshit, and have a little fun.”

Brennan Leigh - "Dumpster Diving"

Her latest single, "Dumpster Diving," which she describes as a "trashy little tune," is everything we love about the musician. It's a vintage style country song that comes in at a punk like one minute, forty-eight seconds. With a chorus of "Dumpster diving, this ain't gonna last / Dumpster diving, 'cause baby you like trash..." how can you possibly resist. Leigh's latest gives us a decades old sound with modern sensibilities and her fantastic voice that's tailor made for this genre of music. Artist : Rain on Fridays Album : Death to Affection Quick Thoughts : This came out of nowhere and blew my socks off. It's indie alt/punk, sometimes on the screamy side, but the angst and noise comes across so well and in such a great, fun way that I didn't expect. "Banshee" is a true highlight, but the whole album is not only one of the best of the week, but perhaps one of the best of the year. Claire Morales - "YVB"

Photo by Wesley Kirk I'm really struggling with how to describe the latest from Claire Morales. The Denton, TX based artist recently released "YVB," and it's a mind-blowing new song. It's a cosmically psychedelic song that lands somewhere between the light and flowy hippie psychedelia and the heavy psychedelic side. It's an intense single that incorporates 90's indie rock, alt-rock, Mexican guitar, folk, late 60's hard rock, and possibly more. "YVB" sounds like the desert, if that makes sense. This is one you simply need to listen to in order to fully get. The song is filled with swirling guitars and possibly violin to create a song that launches from pretty and poppy to giant, theatrical hard rock.
