Coliseum - "You Might Be Dead"

Image
Hardcore legends Coliseum called it a day back in 2015, but now they are back with their first single in nine years, just in time for this weekend's reunion shows in Louisville, KY. "You Might Be Dead" might be a bit slower than what you normally envision when you hear the description of hardcore, but aren't we all at this point? Coliseum always snuck a lot of melody into their music, and "You Might Be Dead" is no exception. It's probably more similar to Fugazi than Minor Threat or Converge, but it's obviously still punk. This is a great return from a dearly missed band, and we're thrilled to hear what's coming next. Ryan Patterson (vocals/guitar) says of the new single: “As we played together and revisited songs from our back catalog that meant so much to us, we were inspired to write a new song that channeled those feelings and that energy.  We had an incredible time making our C.L.S.M. side project/offshoot album that was released last yea...

shallow pools - "Golden"

Photo by Sarah Mentus After being blown away by shallow pools at this year's In Between Days, I'm thrilled to bring you a new single from the Boston based indie-pop quartet. "Golden," which was co-written by Lynn Gunn of Pvris and Cameron Walker-Wright of Twin XL and The Ready Set, is right on the border of what would normally be too pop for my personal taste, but shallow pools just make it work. It's a chilled out pop song that resides in that mid-tempo area where it's a little too calm to dance but too upbeat to just chill out to. It's going to inspire you to move at least a little, and has an impossible to resist upbeat vibe. shallow pools says of their new single: “Living in the moment is hard when you know that the ending is inevitable.  We’ve all experienced the feeling of being stuck between happiness and existential dread, and we wanted to convey that feeling in ‘Golden’.” You can watch the video for "Golden" below. All Get Out - "Come Back Around"

Image
Photo by Riley Taylor South Carolina's All Get Out are labelled as folk-rock, and that's not entirely untrue. Their latest single, "Come Back Around," is reminding me more of post-grunge 90's artists like Gin Blossoms and Toad the Wet Sprocket mixed with the epic alt-rock of Band of Horses. The song has buzzy guitars soaring to huge heights while still staying rooted in Americana. This might not be truly traditional folk, but if artists like Courtney Barnett and Dinosaur Jr can play the Newport Folk Festival, All Get Out can be considered firmly folk rock with some indie rock flourishes. Frontman Nathan Hussey says of his band's upcoming album: “My hope for this record  is to reach a new audience. And that’s harder than making a new record. Because I want to reach the people who don’t know our band, but who would probably like this if they ever heard it. I didn’t really walk into this record with a theme, and I didn’t really walk out of it with one, either. It...
