Frances Chang - "Eye Land"

Image
Photo by Desmond Picotte Brooklyn's Frances Chang just released one of the most thrilling singles of 2023. "Eye Land" starts out as this dreamy and twangy song that has just the slightest hints of grunge hidden behind the twang. It then proceeds to morph multiple times through multiple genres, including dream pop, indie pop, power pop, post-grunge, etc. It's the kind of song that you never know what's coming next, and this is all packed into a just over four minute run time. I checked how long I had been listening at one point and it was less than ninety seconds. It felt like so much longer, only because of how much had already happened in the song. Despite the fact that "Eye Land" feels a lot longer than it is, you're going to end up disappointed there isn't more when it ends. Frances Chang says of her new single: "This song marked a period of change - a big relationship was ending, I was solo touring with my friend around the Ireland and E...

Frances Chang - "i quit cigs"

Photo by Em Joseph In what is sure to be your new favorite song about quitting smoking, Frances Chang has just released a new single, "i quit cigs." This new song is absolutely tortured. It's a highly emotional freak out of a song that starts off relatively calmly and then explodes into these bursts of noise and pain. At times "i quit cigs" is fairly painful to listen to, and at times it's oddly soothing. The noise comes and goes unexpectedly, and Chang uses saxophone to cause the most discomfort. This one is most certainly not going to be for everyone out there, but if you think a discordant singer/songwriter tune might be your thing, you're going to love this one. You can watch the video for "i quit cigs" below. support your local nihilist is due out on July 22 via Destiny is a Dog, and can be pre-ordered through Bandcamp . Frances Chang - "support your local nihilist"

Photo by Em Joseph Brooklyn's Frances Chang just released one of the most sonically interesting songs of the year. "support your local nihilist" is either an art punk song masquerading as a pop song or a pop song masquerading as an art punk song. Chang's vocals are pure pop, almost like the Top 40 kind but probably a little too indie pop... most of the time. But this single couldn't be considered pop by any stretch of the imagination. It's an absurdly noisy song that's structure devolves completely by the end. It's just buzzing guitars that eventually just implode. What's bizarre is how much harmony exists in "support your local nihilist." This is the kind of song you're going to either love or hate, but you'll at least find it intriguing either way.
