A pretty stacked week this week for releases. Got a Girl - I Love You But I Must Drive Off of This Cliff Now : Got a Girl, the Dan the Automator/Mary Elizabeth Winstead project has been highlighted here at the blog before , and now that we have a full-length album, we can hear how well the initial song release matches the album. Overall, Ken is right that it feels a lot like the Lovage project, and while it may be a tad too long for my ears, there is more than enough here to really enjoy as a lounge-style electronic piece, and Winstead more than holds her own as a singer (which can be dicey for actors and actresses who try to cross over). Definitely worth putting in your rotation. Alvvays - Alvvays : I hate their name, and there's not exactly new ground forged in the debut album from Alvvays, but there's something very pleasant and reliable here that I appreciate. Got a Girl is the collaboration between Dan the Automator (Handsome Boy Modelling School, Deltron 3030) and actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead ( Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Smashed ). I know, I know. For those of us who remember " Party All the Time ," we know to cringe whenever we see an actor try to become a singer. Lately, there have been exceptions, with Zooey Deschanel and Donald Glover become bona fide recording artists. Luckily, Got a Girl is legitimately good. They duo just released their first video, "Did We Live Too Fast." The song plays with both 60s French torch songs and Dan the Automator's trademark laid back hip hop. It's much closer to Lovage... Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By than the Automator's more known work. The video features Winstead as a wife dealing with discovering her husband (the Automator) has a fetish for ladies with a third eye. It's definitely worth a watch. Somehow I missed out on this when it came out 5 months ago. Apparently Dan the Automator has an upcoming project called Got a Girl which is a collaboration with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, of Scott Pilgrim vs the World  and Death Proof . Whenever an actress decides to sing, it's always a bit iffy, but Mary Elizabeth Winstead actually pulls it off quite well. Got a Girl is more on the lines of Automator's work with Lovage: Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By and Pillowfight. Mary Elizabeth comes across like a 60s French lounge singer over Portishead if DJ Andy Smith had a bigger role.
