Artist : Suz Slezak Album : Our Wings May Be Featherless Quick Thoughts : It's impossible for us to be objective about one half of David Wax Museum, so I'm not going to even try. Suz Slezak's first solo album is a really gorgeous folky poppy effort, with a few songs that, were there any justice in the world, would sit comfortably on the radio. If you're a fan of David Wax Museum, you'll find a lot to love here, and if you're not, you'll still find a lot to love. It's easily a favorite of the year so far. Songs of Note : "Beautiful Mess," "Blaze of Gold," "Now It Is Morning" Artist : Luna Li Album : Duality Quick Thoughts : Luna Li has been on my radar for a bit, but even this album surprised me. This has a lot of interesting songs, and it's got a bit of an edge to it, too - the song with beadadoobee in particular is a highlight, but her mix of styles and themes makes her stand out in ways other efforts don't...

Rhyan Sinclair - "Interstate Sailors"

Image
Kentucky's Rhyan Sinclair started off as the singer for All the Little Pieces between the ages of eleven and fifteen. Now on her own as a solo artist, her music can best be described as cosmic country. Based on her latest single, "Interstate Sailors," her sound has elements of classic 70's country mixed with psychedelia, but updated for a 2022 audience. "Interstate Sailors" is an absolute anthem of a song reminiscent of an artist like Dolly Parton meets Stevie Nicks but with the trippy alt-rock edge of early Flaming Lips. It's a song that is almost mainstream but veers off into the odd just enough to keep Rhyan Sinclair's music interesting. Rhyan Sinclair says of her new song: “I think ‘Interstate Sailors’ is about reclaiming your power, in whatever way the listener wants to receive that. I don’t like to take away someone’s individual experience of a song by over-explaining my point of view. For me, when I wrote the song, it was about my career in mu...

Rhyan Sinclair - "Dragon Spirit"

Image
Photo via Facebook Kentucky's Rhyan Sinclair is definitely doing classic country on her latest single, but it has her own twist on the sound. "Dragon Spirit" has a cosmic, 70's rock vibe to it. It's almost as if Gram Parsons took a few more steps into rock while still keeping his music country. To those of us that listen to a lot of alt-country, "Dragon Spirit" is going to sound like it could be a huge crossover mainstream country hit, although we know it won't since mainstream country would never accept music that's actually country these days. Rhyan Sinclair is the latest in a line of artists like Margo Price and Jason Isbell that should be accepted a lot more by people who consider themselves country fans. But for those of us that discover Sinclair are lucky to have. You can watch the video for "Dragon Spirit" below. Letters to Aliens is due out March 4 and can be pre-ordered here .
