Heather Maloney - "Labyrinth in the Weeds"

Heather Maloney's upcoming album wasn't meant for release. It's a collection of songs mourning her late father, and sharing memories of him. It's set for release at the end of the month, and a new single is out now. "Labyrinth in the Weeds" feels more intimate than the previously released singles. It starts out with minimal instrumentation, and is mostly Maloney's vocals. The result is a song that is mostly positive despite how mournful it is. Just as you think the song is about to end, it transitions into a more passionate track. As touching as Maloney's previous singles have been, if "Labyrinth in the Weeds" doesn't touch something deep inside of you, you may not have a soul. Heather Maloney says of her latest single: “This song is an ode to one of my earliest and most favorite memories at my childhood home, which was at the edge of the Appalachians in northwest New Jersey. My dad would let the grass in the field grow until late summer....

The upcoming album from Heather Maloney was never meant to be released publicly. It's a deeply personal album that the Northampton singer-songwriter wrote and recorded after the death of her father, some of which was recorded in her childhood home. The latest single, "Light You Leave Behind," is a song about her father's youth spent sneaking into shows at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City. It's a beautiful song with its roots in folk, but with a little more rock to it than we typically hear in Maloney's music. It's a gorgeous and upbeat song that expresses loss while celebrating her father's life. Heather Maloney says of her new single: “This song came out of one of the last stories my dad ever told me. He was a Jersey boy with a legitimate twinkle in his eye and a serious mischievous streak. When he was a teenager he’d sneak out of his window - and then - sneak into the nosebleeds at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, where he got to see so many of the ...

The upcoming album from Northampton's Heather Maloney was never meant to be released. The songs were written after the death of her father, and it felt too personal to be made available for sale and to have to promote. (Maloney recorded for two days in her childhood home, including playing percussion on the walls of the house.) Her friends and family convinced her to release it. The first song released from the album is "Exploding Star." Even without knowing the backstory, the song feels intensely personal and intimate. It's the rare song that has that feeling without being stripped down. "Exploding Star" is a fully fleshed out and lush song. It's quite simply a beautiful and stunning song with folk roots, but is more of a singer-songwriter song than purely folk. Heather Maloney says of recording her new album in her childhood home: “ That house is the backdrop to so many moments with my father that became song lyrics on the record, so having *the house ...
