First Listen: New Releases for 1 March 2024

Image
Artist : ScHoolboy Q Album : BLUE LIPS Quick Thoughts : I'm like a lot of people where I got on board with Q thanks to "Druggys WitH Hoes Again" and "Hands on the Wheel," and his latest is still high quality and cements him as one of the more underrated rappers currently working. Lots of great tracks here, and one of the better rap albums of the year thus far. Songs of Note : "Pop," "THank god 4 me," "Yeern 101," "Pig feet," "Foux" Artist : Faye Webster Album : Underdressed at the Symphony Quick Thoughts : Faye Webster has a delivery that always catches me off-guard. Her voice floats above the music, which gives a timeless quality to her sound that's missing from even some of the best retro acts. "He Loves Me Yeah!" is an earworm and a half, and the title track is a real highlight, but there's a ton of great stuff in here in a busy week. Check it out. Songs of Note : "Wanna Qui...

Faye Webster - "Lifetime"

Image
Photo by Michelle Mercado Atlanta's Faye Webster has this very specific sound of mellow, laid back and incredibly groovy music. Her latest single, "Lifetime," might just be the most Faye Webster song to date. "Lifetime" is almost impossibly chill. It almost has this lounge song vibe to it, and has an almost jazzy quality. This is the definition of a cool sounding song. In another artist's hands, this song could have ended up boring, but Webster has this magical quality that makes virtually everything she does compelling. Part of it is her voice just sucks you in, but Webster has that certain intangible star quality that makes you need to listen. You can watch the video for "Lifetime" below. The single is out now via Secretly Canadian. For more on Faye Webster, check out the artist's website . Upcoming tour dates are below the video, and the U.S. portion is completely sold out. Oct 17 - Washington, DC @ 9:30 Club -  SOLD OUT Oct 18 - Washington,...

Faye Webster - "But Not Kiss"

Image
Photo by Michelle Mercado We've been giant fans of Faye Webster's take on chilled out indie rock and folk for a while now, so we're always thrilled when she releases new music. Her latest, "But Not Kiss," fits right into her catalog of music, but it is also her most ambitious song to date. The new song starts off just as we'd expect a Faye Webster song to start off. It's simple, and beautiful, and mellow. And then the piano kicks in, and everything changes. "But Not Kiss" is all of those things, but somehow the piano gives the song this absolutely epic feel. This is the biggest sounding of Webster's songs to date, and it shows some interesting growth for the artist. Faye Webster says of her new single: “ I think it could be a really romantic song or a really anti-romantic song.  It’s something I’ve looked for but struggled to find in other love songs, for them to describe this conflict or contradiction. ” You can watch the video for "But...

Live Shows: Here and There Festival, Mass MoCA, North Adams, MA 8/13/22

Image
When I first heard about the Courtney Barnett curated Here and There Festival, I knew I wanted to attend. Courtney Barnett putting together a travelling festival with a revolving group of artists playing? When I saw our local one was being held at Mass MoCA in North Adams, which is one of my favorite festival venues, and was going to be one of the larger all day ones, and also included Hana Vu, Faye Webster, The Beths, and Lucy Dacus, all of which are artists I'll go see any time they play in the area? How could I miss this? Despite having a logistical mishap on the way and missing Hana Vu, I was in great spirits. Besides the amazing musical line up, that was one of the great joys of Here and There: Everyone was happy. There was no aggression from everyone, everyone was nice and polite to each other, and everyone was just thrilled to be there. Even in the photo pit the vibe was just chill and friendly. I overheard two young women saying they drove twelve hours to be the...

First Listen: New Releases for 25 June

Image
Artist : Hurry Album : Fake Ideas Quick Thoughts : Hurry does a lot of great alt-rock, and has a few solid albums under their belt. Fake Ideas feels like an album from a band that has figured it out, and each song feels better than the last. It's a listen where I struggled in highlighting any specific songs, because they're all great, melodic alt-rock songs. Don't miss out. Songs of Note : "It's Dangerous," "A Fake Idea," "Slogging Through Summer" Artist : Lucy Dacus Album : Home Video Quick Thoughts : I don't think I'm speaking out of turn when I say that both Ken and I think "Night Shift" is a near-perfect song. So Lucy Dacus, with a great debut album, has a lot to live up to, and Home Video largely delivers. There are a lot of solid listens throughout, and it's thematically linked in many ways that was unexpected but welcome. This is definitely a better cohesive album than her debut, even if there is...

Faye Webster - "Better Distractions"

Image
We've been absolutely loving Faye Webster's ultracool combination of laid back 60's vibes updated with a modern indie rock/pop sound. Her latest single, "Better Distractions," personifies that immaculately. It's an insanely dreamy tune that is guaranteed to make you need to move, despite it being a slow ballad. As with any of Webster's songs, "Better Distractions" is just impossibly cool. There are a lot of other artists that we cover here that are combining 60's retro cool with a modern sound, but no one is quite nailing the vibe like she is. Webster says of "Better Distractions":  “ I wrote this song kinda without knowing I was writing it .  It’s a kind of free association, just thoughts running straight from my head onto paper untouched. I also think it’s best my band has ever sounded on record. ”  You can watch the video for "Better Distractions" below. For more on Faye Webster, be sure to check out her ...

Faye Webster - "In a Good Way"

Image
Photo by EatHumans Saying that we liked Faye Webster's 2019 release Atlanta Millionaires Club is a bit of an understatement. The album narrowly missed my top ten of the year, and now Webster is back with a new single. "In a Good Way" could be an unreleased track from her previous album. It's an R&B-tinged slow jam, which normally would be the last thing I'd want to hear, but Webster just has her own sound that I can't resist. Even if "R&B-tinged jam" doesn't sound like you're kinda thing, you really owe it to yourself to give "In a Good Way" a listen. Webster filters that genre through her own style. It's almost like 90's DIY indie rock decided to make a completely earnest R&B song, which I think we can all agree sounds like a killer concept. You can watch the video for "In a Good Way" below. You can stream and purchase the single here . For more on Faye Webster, check out her website .

Faye Webster - "Right Side of My Neck"

Image
Photo by Eat Humans As with all of the singles from her forthcoming album, the latest from Faye Webster is quite difficult to describe. Musically, "Right Side of My Neck" is very country/Americana based. There's quite a bit of steel guitar that solidifies that. But then there's Webster's voice. She just doesn't just even the slightest bit of twang or anything that resembles country. If anything, she sings in a gorgeous soft R&B style. While combining R&B and hip hop with country seems to be the goofy viral trend of the minute, Webster does it just slightly in an honest, non-gimmicky way. "Right Side of My Neck" might be a perfect song. You can listen to "Right Side of My Neck" below. Atlanta Millionaires Club , the new album from Faye Webster, will be out May 24 on Secretly Canadian. You can pre-order a copy here . For more on Faye Webster, check out her website . Current tour dates are below the song. Fri. May 3 – Mobi...

Faye Webster featuring Father - "Flowers"

Image
Photo by Eat Humans After hearing the first single off her upcoming album we thought we had Atlanta's Faye Webster pegged. "Room Temperature" is a groovy indie country ballad heavy on pedal guitar. Her latest, "Flowers," couldn't be more different. "Flowers" features fellow Atlanta artist Father, and is a straight up hip hop/R&B song. In fact, the song is meant as an homage to Awful Records which is a hip hop collective that helped launch her career. We never would have guessed that based on "Room Temperature." While "Flowers" is a hip hop song, it's also an odd hip hop song. It's incredibly mellow, and doesn't have the beat or instrumentation anyone would ever expect with hip hop. But it's still hip hop, although weird in the best possible way. You can watch the video for "Flowers" below. Atlanta Millionaires Club , the upcoming album from Faye Webster, will be out May 24 on Secretly Canadian...
