Enneads - "Eidos"

Image
Doom jazz trio Enneads have released a single off their upcoming album, and if doom jazz sounds like your kind of thing, you're going to love "Eidos." First, doom jazz doesn't sound like what you're expecting anything in the jazz genre. The two singles we've heard from Enneads' upcoming album are jazz based more on the instruments used than the musical style. This sounds more like something Sonic Youth would have released on an SYR album, or a side project of theirs. It's dark and deeply experimental, and, if you like that sort of thing, it will absolutely grip you. "Eidos" is a song that sets an immediate mood, and it's certainly not a cheery one. But, if you like dark and experimental music that doesn't fit any true genre, Enneads will be for you. You can listen to "Eidos" below. Enneads self-titled debut album is due out August 28 on Birdwatcher, and is available for pre-order through Bandcamp . They will be playing Septe...

Enneads - "Metanoia"

Image
I never knew how much I needed doom jazz in my life, but now that I've heard the new single from Enneads, I'm fully on board with the genre. The band consists of Zach Layton, Hamir Atwal, and Phyllis Chen. Much of the sound on "Metanoia" comes from a seventeen string electric bass and an amplified piano. This will completely deconstruct your idea of what jazz is, and it sounds more aligned with noise rock than I expected. "Metanoia" is delightfully experimental besides being considered doom. Enneads aren't going to be for everyone, but I highly doubt universal appeal is their end game. This is one of the most unique and interesting sounds we've covered this year and defies any of our genre expectations. Zach Layton says of his band's new single: "unusual instrumentation of 17 string electric bass with natural plucked string harmonics produced inside the lid of a grand piano and drums, 'chopped and screwed' - slowed down - to produce ...

Hot Mustard - "Birdwatcher"

Image
Image via Facebook Hot Mustard is the instrumental jazz meets hip hop project that features Jordan Mclean (Antibalas), Dave "Smoota" Smith (TV on the Radio), and Matt Bauder (Father John Misty and Arcade Fire) on horns. The group's latest single, "Birdwatcher," continues what we loved about 2023's Seconds. The song sounds like it's pieced together from obscure jazz and soul samples from the 60's and 70's, but this is all fresh jazz. If you're one of those people that's never really been able to appreciate jazz but loves hip hop that samples jazz and soul classics, this is a great jumping on point. "Birdwatcher" is wonderfully creative and impossibly engaging. Jack Powell (guitar) of Hot Mustard says of the band's latest single: “It’s really just a simple allegory about getting caught up and losing sight of one’s passions; these things tend to unintentionally draw from deeply personal experience. For Hot Mustard, I try to str...

Kaleah Lee - "The Same"

Image
Photo by Donnel Garcia I'm the type of music snob that would typically avoid a musician who became big on TikTok, but something about Kaleah Lee's single "Rotting Fruit" worked for me. With her latest, the Vancouver based artist surpasses her previous single. "Rotting Fruit" was more of a folk leaning pop song, but "The Same" is a folk song with some pop leanings. If anything, "The Same" sounds more like an intimate bedroom recording than a pop song designed for teens to lip sync to. I hesitate to call Lee's latest alt-folk, although I probably would if it was nearly anyone else. Lee just has something intensely compelling that I doubt most music fans are going to be able to resist. You can listen to "The Same" below. Birdwatcher is due out March 22 and is available for pre-order here . For more on Kaleah Lee, check out the artist on Instagram and Twitter .
