Owen FitzGerald - "I Went Back in Time (To Tell You I Love You)"

Image
Photo by Shannon Kelley Durham, NC's Owen FitzGerald has created one of the most unique love songs you've ever heard. "I Went Back in Time (To Tell You I Love You)" is an indie rock meets folk rocker that imagines FitzGerald going back in time to meet his wife before they met, but then abandoning the plan since doing so could jeopardize everything (the laws of time travel and all...) It's a ridiculously fun song filled with a bunch of fuzz and heart, along with the perfect amount of twang. FitzGerald has hit the perfect mix of indie rock and folk, which is kind of our sweet spot around here, so obviously we're going to be on board for a song this epic. Owen FitzGerald says of the song: “I wrote this song for her birthday, and as I wrote I realized: I'm so glad she didn't know me in my 20s. It wasn't the right time, but I'm so glad I know her now.  Where will our timeline go next? I'm still greedy for our future.” You can listen to "I W...

Owen FitzGerald - "Don't Give Me a Pet"

Durham's outsider poet/country singer Owen FitzGerald is back with a new single. "Don't Give Me a Pet" starts off as a relatively straightforward modern country song, despite the noise loop at the beginning. It's a little bit off from mainstream, but that's hardly a bad thing. And then the bizarro rock burst kicks in that just leads the song into strange territory. It ushers in an indie rock fuzz that never quite leaves the song even as it tries to head back into a more traditional sound. Instead, the song wildly veers around with changing tempos and styles with little to no warning. In other words, it's exactly what we love around here. In a press release, Owen FitzGerald says of the new song: "My family attended the 10am Mass at St. Raphael's every Sunday while I was a child. 'Our' seats were on the left, and towards the front, if you were looking at the altar. I always held the aisle. After taking communion, a Catholic is supposed to kn...

Owen Fitzgerald - "Touching the Oven at Work"

Image
Durham, NC's Owen Fitzgerald makes folk/country... kind of? His latest single, "Touching the Oven at Work," would be considered folk, but mostly because we wouldn't know what to call it. It almost has that raw, unpolished charm you would get from someone that has had no training and is just kind of clunking away at making music, but Fitzgerald clearly knows what he's doing. It's kind of like a song that throws out all basic song structure, but "Touching the Ovens at Work" does follow its own structure. Fitzgerald is taking a very well known and well used basis for his music, but just kind of doing his own thing with it. This is a unique artist that you're going to want to check out ASAP. You can listen to "Touching the Oven at Work" below. The song is currently available as a single via Bandcamp .  A deep clean you can count on! is due out in 2022 on Sleepy Cat Records.
