Linying - "Dial Tone"

Image
Photo by Michelle Mei "Dial Tone," the latest single from Los Angeles via Singapore artist Linying, is the perfect style of pop song for those that bristle from pop. The song is a delightfully chill track that combines Adult Contemporary with alt-R&B. Pop music tends to skew to a younger crowd, but "Dial Tone" feels like it's a grown up song while still sounding cool. The song combines ethereal vocals with chilled out beats in a way I don't think anyone can resist. Modern music seems to be doing away with the rigid genre restrictions that have dominated music for decades, and "Dial Tone" is a perfect example of how great music can be without them. Linying says of her latest single and video: “Lenne and I are both from Singapore — we’d moved to LA at different times and hadn’t really kept in touch, but I have always admired her work greatly. I remember a personal photo series she did many years ago titled 'A337'  that depicted a traditio...

Linying - "Blondie"

Image
Photo by Michelle Mei Los Angeles-via-Singapore artist Linying has a new single out that revels in the space between pop and indie rock. "Blondie" leans much more heavily into the world of pop music, with just enough of an indie rock edge and uniqueness to keep the music snobs enraptured. It's an upbeat song that you're going to need to dance around to. It includes some of the most interesting and thrilling instrumental flourishes throughout that make "Blondie" undeniably great. It's kind of like if Taylor Swift jammed with boygenius after all of them obsessively listened to Neutral Milk Hotel. Even as someone who typically shies away from pop music, Linying's latest is a phenomenal song. Linying says of her latest single: “It’s about a beautiful, idyllic day I spent swimming in a lagoon with someone I’d just met.  I felt so happy and light, but at the same time there was a part of me that kept thinking, ‘I’m not actually this light. You don’t know w...

Linying - "Donovan"

Image
The latest from Los Angeles-via-Singapore artist Linying is fairly hard to tie down to single genre. "Donovan" might be a rock song with electronic elements, or it could be an electronic song with rock elements. It's also both a dance and pop song, but it still rocks? There's just too strong of a chugging guitar to not be a rock song, although it has too strong of a pop and dance element to truly not be a pop song.. or a rock song. What we all really need to do is ignore genres and just enjoy a great song, which "Donovan" unquestionably is. Linying is a fascinating artist making some of the most fun music out there. Linying says of her latest single: “The person I allow myself to be is finally coaxed to the surface in this fertile and lonely world. These once seemingly threatening entities were really my guardians all along, keepers of my peace and steadfast, rock-solid admirers of my most uninhibited self." You can watch the video for "Donovan...
