Ronnie and the Savoys with Steve "Poppy" Popovich - "Domino"

Image
Photo courtesy Cleveland International Records Growing up, I spent my tween years listening to oldies instead of the current hits of the day. (As you can imagine, I was wildly popular...) Because of this, I will always have a fondness for early 1950's rock 'n' roll. It's becoming a lost genre, which is one of the reasons why it's great when a lost song from that era gets rediscovered. "Domino" from Ronnie and the Savoys was originally recorded in 1958 at Cleveland Recording Company in Cleveland, OH. "Domino" is just a pure, lost 1950's garage rock 'n' roll song that includes a killer horn solo. There aren't many of these lost songs out there waiting to be rediscovered, so when one if found, it's our duty to bring it to you. Wicked Cool Records founder Stevie Van Zandt says of the track: “Steve Popovich was one of my lifelong best friends. He signed the Asbury Jukes among other things. I knew he had a band when he was young, bu...

Shovels & Rope - "Domino"

Image
Photo by Leslie Ryan McKellar According to Shovels & Rope, their upcoming album is going to be their heavy metal album. Well, heavy metal for them. As Michael Trent says, " It’s not heavy metal, but in our guts, it feels a bit like Heavy Metal ." You'll get what he means when you hear the first single from the album. "Domino" is still based in the folk and early rock 'n' roll we've come to adore from Shovels & Rope, but you can see why the South Carolina duo would call this their heavy metal album. Instead of sounding like heavy metal, "Domino" contains the spirit of heavy metal. There is just the slightest hint of the attitude and edge of heavy metal that is typically missing in a Shovels & Rope song. It still sounds like them, but just the slightest hint of a band expanding their sound after ten years is always welcome. You can watch the video for "Domino" below. Manticore is due out February 18 on Dualtone. You can ...

Flasher - "Pressure"

Image
Photo by Jen Dessinger Last year we brought you a few of Flasher's singles, and since then we've been waiting to hear more from the Washington DC band. We're finally in luck since June will see the release of their debut album. While we wait, we can check out "Pressure," the first single from the album.  Everything we loved about Flasher is on display here. "Pressure" is fairly straightforward modern alt rock with a bouncy, danceable flair. Maybe it's just the DC connection, but I hear some influence from bands like Rites of Spring or Fugazi. But, you know, fun. Most people are probably going to hear more DEVO or B-52's than those other bands, and they're probably right. It's a manic mixture that sounds fresh while drawing from the past. You can watch the video for "Pressure" below. Constant Image, the debut album from Flasher, will be out June 8 on Domino Recording Co. You can pre-order a copy here . For more on Flasher...

Animal House - "Domino"

Image
This one will make you feel old. Apparently the whole neo-rock/garage movement of the early 2000s that brought us The Strokes, The Hives, etc is now due for its own revival. The latest single from Animal House is filled with the type of garage rock that was all the rage back at the turn of the century. "Domino" is fun and catchy as hell, with the kind of attitude that's going to reinvigorate the term cheeky. Although I had assumed they were British, the band is from Australia, so let's hope they're just the start of a new burst of Australian garage rock. "Domino" is the latest single from the new EP, Sorry , from Animal House. You can watch the video for "Domino" below. For more on Animal House, check out their website .
