If It's Too Loud...

Photo by Julian Brier I became completely enamored with Kiltro back in April when I first heard "Guanaco." The mixture of Latin folk and shoegaze was nothing like anything I'd heard before, and each single just sucked me in more and more. Since Underbelly was released earlier this month, I've played it an embarrassing amount of times, and get more and more into it each time. Sometimes you can just tell when a band will be amazing live, so I had to check them out when they came to Boston at the legendary Club Passim. I certainly wasn't expecting the configuration Kiltro is currently touring as. Chris Bowers was on vocals, guitar, keyboard, and loops, and was joined by a bass player, a second guitarist, and two drummers. Photo by Julien Brier We loved the unique blend of Latin rhythms, folk, and dance music we heard in Kiltro's previous two singles, but their latest seems to have come out of nowhere. "Softy" still has all of those elements, but it's both the most mainstream pop of their previous singles while still being the most left-field. The Denver based band have created a song that almost sounds like something that could easily be played on an Adult Contemporary radio station if it wasn't so odd. It's just soaking in too much reverb to ever to considered mainstream, even though Chris Bowers Castillo just has a voice your mom would adore.  You can listen to "Softy" below. The title of their latest single makes sense once you realize it was recorded in quarantine. "All the Time in the World" has the unique mixture of Latin rhythms, folk, and dance music we became enamored with the first time we heard Kiltro's previous single, "Guanaco." This newest song is a laid back and chilled out affair that is still going to have you needing to move. It's a truly unique sound made up of multiple familiar elements. Photo by Julian Brier Denver's Kiltro have a sound quite unlike other bands that combine Latin roots with mainstream rock. "Guanaco" is a rock song with Latin roots, but Kiltro is just mixing it up differently. There is an intensity to the song without it being particularly loud or heavy. There is a distinct groove that is going to make a listener want to dance and move, even though there is a heavy darkness in the song. The song has an almost electronic element to it, even though it's much more folk. This is an intriguing song that only gets more so with each listen. You'll find something new each time you spin it, so plan on doing so frequently.
