First Listen: New Releases for 26 April 2024

Artist : Joh Chase Album : Solo Quick Thoughts : Joh Chase has gotten some worthwhile attention in this place as of late, with "Avalanche" a certified killer track, and I'm happy to inform you that their whole album is absolutely stellar. "Gone" and "TV of Your Mind" are both in constant rotation in my head, and this roots-esque singer-songwriter effort is not one to be missed. A mandatory listen this week. Arrows of Athena - "Reckless Heart"

Photo by Karla Lopresti Something about Arrows of Athena just sounds like they're from Boston. The band started as a pandemic project of Scott Lerner and Jac-Lyn Gibson and just released a new single, "Reckless Heart." The song specifically sounds like late 90's Boston as the alt-rock scene started to edge its way into the world of pop, although we never would have admitted that back then. To me it sounds like if Letters to Cleo's Go! had gone a little deeper into the world of pop music. "Reckless Heart" still has a harder, almost industrial edge to a guitar than pop music would typically have, and it's this dichotomy of sounds that makes Arrows of Athena such an intriguing band. Jac-Lyn Gibson says of her band's latest single: “‘Reckless Heart’ is just the kind of song that no matter what genre you’re into, it just pulls you in right from the beginning. It has some rock, a little pop, and I’m obsessed with the overall ‘90s throwback sound of it....
