If It's Too Loud...

Photo by Stellina Stampouli As the current generation of bands continues to redefine the shoegaze genre, our latest discovery is STRANGE LOT. The Austin band just released a video for "Rain and Fog," the B-side of their recent 7". This new song adds some synths and unexpected psychedelia to shoegaze, creating an intense, swirling sound. Along with the standard heavy fuzz, the synths add some pop and the psychedelic aspect of the song, plus there's some wonderfully noisy feedback at times. "Rain and Fog" also includes driving beats that almost make you want to dance. STRANGE LOT have taken the decades old genre and reworked it into a sound all their own.  STRANGE LOT says of their latest song: “Rain and Fog is a glimpse into the next chapter of our sound, blending shoegaze guitars with driving bass and crisp synths. Photo by Adela Loconte Hailing from Brooklyn, Las Rosas's new single combines multiple standard rock elements in a way I can't remember them being combined. "Christa" is a ramblin' odyssey of a song, combining both Bob Dylan's more country sound and Pavement's laid back indie rock. Yeah, I know. How has that never happened before? They could have just stopped there, but the whole thing is wrapped in a pop sheen, along with a distinct psychedelic groove throughout. Plus, they throw in guitar solos towards the end that come out of nowhere. You can watch the video for "Christa" below. Photo by Alec Castillo We bring you a lot of 90's inspired indie rock here at If It's Too Loud..., but there's just so much of it right now that's absolutely great. The latest single from Acid Dad recalls this era just before nu-metal took over the late 90's when everything seemed possible. "2Ci" is an upbeat indie rock semi-anthem that has the pop hooks of Superdrag, the slight quirkiness of Archers of Loaf, and the almost unhinged feeling of early Arctic Monkeys. Photo by Devon Bristol Shaw Arriving just a little too late for Halloween is the latest song from Brooklyn's BIRDS, "Most Ghost." "Most Ghost" continues the band's knack for deftly merging classic psychedelia and 90's indie rock. It's starts off with guitar feedback that turns into perfect slacker guitar riffs. The song builds so slowly that you might not even notice. Somehow the guitar solo at the bridge (which feels similar to the Pixies' "Velouria") ends up being the most quiet part of the song. It all closes up with some Mission of Burma style looping, while still being a chill, psychedelic and intense indie rock song and the same time. You can listen to "Most Ghost" over at What Youth . Those of us that love indie rock far above 60's hippie stuff might get scared of a lot of the press surrounding Everything All At Once , the latest album from Brooklyn's BIRDS. Sure, the album has a lot of psychedelic elements, but based on reviews you'd think they were a jam band. Instead, BIRDS are psychedelic the way Built to Spill are psychedelic. To further the Built to Spill comparison, they're a splendid mix of earlier, poppier Built to Spill and later, 10+ minute epic song Built to Spill. The album opener, "See it All," might be the best example with it's swirling guitars, almost military style drumming, and slacker vocals. "Scatter" pulls a bit away from the Built to Spill comparisons and feels like a melding of The Strokes and Superdrag. "Get Away" might be my favorite track, and is what the early 00's garage rock boom would have sounded like if any of the bands came from southern California. You can listen to "Ge...
