If It's Too Loud...

Photo by Kate Garner "Helium Balloon" is one of those songs that is nearly impossible to describe, but it's great, so we'll give it a shot. The latest from singer-songwriter Grace Inspace is probably mostly a pop song, but it's both far too complex and far too simple to truly be a pop song. The song is a lilting and stunning slice of modern music. Musically, it's fairly stripped back but also fairly complex, with multiple instruments and sounds wandering in and out at will. Grace Inspace's vocals are the true star of the song, and will instantly grab you as they progress and evolve throughout the track. The main genre would probably be indie pop, but there are elements of folk, indie rock, orchestral music, and maybe even ambient music within "Helium Balloon." "Emergency Contact" is mostly a pop song, but it has a much rougher edge than the vast majority of pop songs out there. It's laid back and dance friendly while also being fairly intense. It's also dark and gritty, and would have been considered much more alternative than pop back in the day. Grace Inspace delivers her vocals with a detached coolness while still injecting them with raw emotion. "Emergency Contact" may be hard to define, unless you want to classify it as a great song.
