Grace Inspace - "Emergency Contact"

The latest from Grace Inspace is fairly hard to define as it doesn't fit snugly into one, or even two, genres. "Emergency Contact" is mostly a pop song, but it has a much rougher edge than the vast majority of pop songs out there. It's laid back and dance friendly while also being fairly intense. It's also dark and gritty, and would have been considered much more alternative than pop back in the day. Grace Inspace delivers her vocals with a detached coolness while still injecting them with raw emotion. "Emergency Contact" may be hard to define, unless you want to classify it as a great song.

Grace Inspace says of her latest single:

"'Emergency Contact' is the story of a lifelong people pleaser reaching her breaking point. It’s a moment of self-realization—when anger, long suppressed, finally spills over and becomes the spark for change. In the chorus, I sing about storing resentment in 'our heavy hair,' a metaphor that’s lived with me since I was a kid. I used to draw girls with hair so heavy it dragged along the floor, weighed down by everything unsaid and would tell my mum my hair felt heavy with emotions. I saw those drawings again before writing this song and to me it captured how women are taught to please, to smooth over, to silence any emotion deemed ugly or excessive. Our hair—heavy with the weight of pandering and pleasing. The song came to life almost entirely in one night, sitting on the couch with Parker Mulherin, recording vocals straight into voice notes. It poured out and was one of the most liberating writing experiences I’ve had."
