Bloodshot Records - Pandemophenia

Image
We're huge fans of just about anything Bloodshot Records puts out, so we're thrilled that they recently released a digital only label b-sides, alternate versions, and covers compilation. Pandemophenia is a seventeen song compilation featuring all of our favorites from Bloodshot Records. "I'm Not There Yet" is as good as anything on Jason Hawk Harris's 2019 album Love & the Dark. William Elliott Whitmore has a new wonderfully rough sounding folk tune called "New Skateboard." Barrence Whitfield and the Savages share Soul Flowers of Titan bonus track "Dream of June." ROOKIE adds an acoustic, old-timey version of last year's "Hold on Tight." And then there's the covers. Ruby Boots does a version of Tom Petty's "Keeping Me Alive," which may only exist as an outtake from the posthumous An American Treasure box set. Laura Jane Grace & The Devouring Mothers bring us a version of "This Land is Your La...

Ruby Boots w/ Indianola - "Might Be Losing My Mind"

Image
We loved Ruby Boots's 2018 album Don't Talk About It. Her blend of slickly produced Americana that still had a dirty and groovy feel to it hit us in just the right spot. She now has a new single out with Indianola! "Might Be Losing My Mind" goes away from her Americana/country roots and has more of an 80's sound to it. This isn't a synth-heavy 80's sound, but more of a top 40 80's sound. (You'll get it when you listen, trust me...) Plus, Indianola joining her for vocals gives it a bit of a Shovels & Rope go pop feel, which we can't argue with. You can listen to "Might Be Losing My Mind" below. The song is available as a single now via Bloodshot Records. You can get a copy here . For more on Ruby Boots, check out her website . Might Be Losing My Mind by Ruby Boots and Indianola

First Listen: New Releases for February 9

Image
A busyish week this week. Album of the Week : Artist : Ruby Boots Album : Don't Talk About It Quick Description : Roots-adjacent music from someone who could be your new favorite. Why You Should Listen : You haven't heard anything like this in a little while, even though you probably think you have. Overall Thoughts : If Lydia Loveless and Margo Price had a baby and gave it to Kathleen Edwards to raise in her coffee shop, you might end up with Ruby Boots. A wonderful listen from start to finish that has a rock sensibility with the roots base behind it without sounding too much like either of them, it feels both raw and polished, dirty yet deliberate. I have no complaints here at all, and if you’re not hooked by “Infatuation,” I may need to ask what’s wrong with you. Recommendation : Easily my favorite of the week. Artist : Various Artists Album : Black Panther soundtrack Quick Description : Probably the most anticipated rap collaboration in years. Why You Shou...

Ruby Boots - "Don't Talk About It"

We're less than a month away from the release of Ruby Boots's highly anticipated (by us) new album, Don't Talk About It. There's a new song we can listen to from the album, the title track "Don't Talk About It." The new song is more of a ballad than the previous single "It's So Cruel."  Like "It's So Cruel," "Don't Talk About It" is just dripping with cool. It's this slick sounding almost torch song, with Ruby Boots's southern twang by way of Australia. While there's definitely a country feel to the song, it's as much of a Nancy Sinatra style song as it is country. Like I said, everything she touches just drips with cool. You can listen to "Don't Talk About It" below. Ruby Boots's new album, Don't Talk About It, will be out February 9 on Bloodshot Records. You can pre-order your copy here . It will feature The Texas Gentlemen and Nikki Lane backing her up. For more on Ruby ...

Ruby Boots - "I Slept Through Christmas"

Image
Photo by Cal Quinn Ruby Boots, who already has us dying for February to hurry up so that we can listen to her new album Don't Talk About It , jumps into the Christmas music game with "I Slept Through Christmas." She tones down her noisy indie rock/garage side for this song, and instead gives us a torch song that would have been written in the 60's and originally produced by Phil Spector and is now being redone on a 70's variety show by a country legend. It's this great, cool Christmas song (and how many of them can you say that about?) with just enough groove to make you love it. You can listen to "I Slept Through Christmas" below. The song is currently available on Bloodshot Records 13 Days of Xmas compilation which also features Christmas songs from Murder By Death, Barrence Whitfield and the Savages, Ron Gallo, and more! You can get your copy here . For more on Ruby Boots, check out her website .

Ruby Boots - "It's So Cruel"

Image
Photo by Cal Quin The latest single from Ruby Boots pounds some of our favorite genres into a single cohesive song. "It's So Cruel"  has the chugging guitars, beat, and attitude of the whole indie rock/garage rock sound. Plus, it's has the grooviness of the 60's go-go boots era personified by Nancy Sinatra and the glam of T-Rex. The whole thing is wrapped up in the twang of outlaw country. And those are just the obvious elements. While blending this many genres into a solitary song might create a listening disaster, this is far from what happens with "It's So Cruel." Instead, Ruby Boots has created what might be the coolest song you've heard in years. Not to mention that she's originally from Australia and now resides in Nashville, which might be the two greatest places for a musical artist to call home. You can watch the video for "It's So Cruel" below. Ruby Boots' Blooshot Records debut, Don't Talk About It,  wil...
