Noël Wells - "Show Me (What You Got)"

Image
Photo by Bernie Bridges It's been six years since we last heard from musician/actor/director/writer No ë l Wells, but the long wait is over with a new single! While her 2019 album, It's So Nice! , was more of a poppy singer-songwriter release, "Show Me (What You Got)" is pure dance pop. It's probably more indie dance pop, or "bonk-pop" as Wells calls it, and it's a wonderfully danceable song. 2025 is a completely different animal than 2019 was, and I think we could all use some fun right now. "Show Me (What You Got)" is perfect for that, with it's glittery disco vibes. Just try to sit still and not dance while this one is playing. Actually, don't try that. I wouldn't want to be responsible for you not fully enjoying the pure joy of Wells' latest. No ë l Wells says of her new single: “‘Show Me (What You Got)’ came to me while I was feeling lonely visiting a garden in Los Angeles — it felt too happy so I didn't do anything...

Noël Wells Covers Bill Withers

Image
We were as surprised as anyone was at how great Noël Wells' 2019 album It's So Nice! was. Typically when someone better known as an actor/comedian/director decides to add musician to that list, it doesn't go very well. But Wells is ridiculously talented, and that extends to her music as well. Inspired by seeing people dancing in the streets after Joe Biden's victory earlier this month, Wells recorded a cover of Bill Withers' iconic "Lovely Day." It's not a straightforward cover, as Wells puts a disco glitter shine on the song. Gone is the smooth 70's R&B, and in its place is a chilled out wall of synths. It's the kind of cover that completely reimagines the original but keeps the original's spirit alive. You can listen to Noël Wells' take on "Lovely Day" below. First Listen: New Releases for 30 August

Image
2/3rds through the year. With that said, not a ton of highlights in what was otherwise a busy week... Artist : !!! Album : Wallop Quick Description : The dance punks back again with another great listen. Why You Should Listen : They've been the model of consistency for ages. Overall Thoughts : I love !!! and they can do no wrong. The new album? More of what they do best while still evolving with the times. The lead track is awesome and the album simply flows all the way through. New converts always welcome, but this will not disappoint longtime fans, either. Recommendation : A favorite for me this week. Artist : Lana Del Rey Album : Norman Fucking Rockwell! Quick Description : Latest from the retro pop songstress. Why You Should Listen : Lana Del Rey occupies a space all her own. Overall Thoughts : No one else sounds like Lana Del Ray, and this album might be one of her more accessible efforts. I never quite know what to make of her on a whole, but that is not...

Noël Wells - "Played for Keeps"

Image
Picture via Twitter Why are we so surprised when an actor releases a musical project and it's actually good? The terrible vanity project trend seems to be long over, and instead we're getting music from people we don't necessarily view as musicians that is quite good! The latest is  Noël Wells. The actor/comedian/director is set to release her debut album this month, and judging from "Played for Keeps," we're going to be into it. "Played for Keeps" is this enjoyable blend of Americana and pop, leaning just slightly more heavily on the Americana side of things. Wells has the slightest 60's girl group sound to her voice, so this could remind you a little of Molly Burch (which makes this right up our alley!) You can watch the video for "Played for Keeps" below. It's So Nice! , Noël Wells's debut album, will be out on August 30. You can pre-order a copy here . Peterborough, NH is a surprisingly fun little town in south central part of New Hampshire. One of the things that makes it cool is the annual music festival The Thing in the Spring. Every single year it's shocking how diverse and huge the artists they get are. 2019 is no exception. Running June 5-9, they're bringing such artists as indie rock/electronica artist Dirty Projectors (performing solo), shoegaze/post-rockers Bardo Pond, folk artists Suzzy Roche and Lucy Wainwright Roche, Ryley Walker, Boston legend Thalia Zedek Band, actor/comedian turned singer Noel Wells, blog favorite The Huntress & The Holder of Hands, experimental rockers Sunburned Hand of the Man, Trinary System (featuring Mission of Burma's Roger Miller), and many more. Shows happen over multiple venues, including the UU Church and a free show on the roof of the Toadstool Bookshop to close out the weekend.
