First Listen: New Releases for 30 August

2/3rds through the year. With that said, not a ton of highlights in what was otherwise a busy week... Artist : !!! Album : Wallop Quick Description : The dance punks back again with another great listen. Why You Should Listen : They've been the model of consistency for ages. Overall Thoughts : I love !!! and they can do no wrong. The new album? More of what they do best while still evolving with the times. The lead track is awesome and the album simply flows all the way through. New converts always welcome, but this will not disappoint longtime fans, either. Recommendation : A favorite for me this week. Artist : Lana Del Rey Album : Norman Fucking Rockwell! Quick Description : Latest from the retro pop songstress. Why You Should Listen : Lana Del Rey occupies a space all her own. Overall Thoughts : No one else sounds like Lana Del Ray, and this album might be one of her more accessible efforts. I never quite know what to make of her on a whole, but that is not...

Rebecca Lou - "I Wanna Be Your Everything"

Back in February we brought you "Bitch u look Good" from Denmark's Rebecca Lou. If that song was riot grrrl meets more straightforward rock, then her latest single fits right in. "I Wanna Be Your Everything" is loud, catchy as you can possibly imagine rock. It exists in this bizarre universe where hard rock can still be pop, in a way it hasn't for years, maybe decades. It's crunchy, has blissfully fuzzed out guitars, and distorted vocals, but it's still a pop song. It almost sounds like if Nirvana went on a huge Cheap Trick kick. In a world where music can either be earnest or fun, an artist like Rebecca Lou that can be both is quite welcome for us. You can watch the live video for "I Wanna Be Your Everything" below. It's easy to call Rebecca Lou's new single, "Bitch u look Good," riot grrrl. It's crunchy, loud, in your face female fronted rock. But it's way too smooth and not abrasive enough to be truly riot grrrl. That's not meant as an insult in any way. "Bitch u look Good" is a great rock song. While the opening guitars reminded me of Bikini Kill's stellar classic "Rebel Girl," this song has a much bigger sound. It's more like if Joan Jett and Lita Ford decided to cover some Veruca Salt songs. It has Jett's punk/rock n roll feel with just a hint of Ford's 80's metal days. And, seriously... how can you go wrong with that? You can watch the video for "Bitch u look Good" below. The single is out now on We Are Suburban. For more on Rebecca Lou, follow her on Facebook .
