Photo by Xander Lewis Our most anticipated new album of this week comes from mary in the junkyard, and now the London band have a new single out to help satiate our desire for the new album. "Blood" is a dreamlike indie rock track that sees vocalist Clari Freeman-Taylor showing off her speak-singing abilities. The song is hypnotizing, with fantastic guitarwork to fully suck you in. It's an almost ramblin' kind of song, or at least as ramblin' as you can get with indie and alt-rock. It's almost an epic, if it wasn't just a tiny bit too mellow to hit the epic mark. I've been a huge fan of mary in the junkyard since I first heard "marble arch" in 2024, and "Blood" could end up being my favorite from them. You can watch the video for "Blood" below. "Mouse" is a gorgeous and powerful track. It starts off as quiet as it could possibly be, feeling deeply personal. Even as the volume and tempo speeds up, the song continues feeling intimate. Even at its most quiet, "Mouse" is a great song and would be one of our favorites of the year. However, when more instruments and volume kick in, mary in the junkyard suck you in even deeper. This is one of our favorite tracks of the year, and makes us more desperate to hear the full album, which is due out next month. "New Muscles" is a hypnotic track focused on vocal harmonies and percussion. It's like a psychedelic version of alt-pop-rock. The song is relatively stripped down and feels quite raw. Saya Barbaglia's viola and/or violin truly has a chance to shine in the song, and the song will lull you despite its quiet intensity. It may feel like mary in the junkyard have been morphing and playing with their sound quite a bit in the past two years, but not as much as they are in "New Muscles." Photo by Daisy & Tomos Ayscough "Candelabra," the latest release from mary in the junkyard, is a quiet and contemplative acoustic track written by Clari Freeman-Taylor when she was seventeen. It's much more stripped down than what we're used to from the indie rock trio, and is painfully quiet. At times Freeman-Taylor's vocals are sung, other times they are spoken, and others it's barely more than a whisper. Maybe it's because of what we're used to from mary in the junkyard, but I kept expecting the song to explode into a crescendo of noise or at least louder rock... but it never does. When a song is as fantastic and engaging as "Candelabra" is, you certainly won't miss any volume. The London trio's latest, "Crash Landing," continues their foray into the various styles that make up indie rock. The latest is a lush and gorgeous track that's possibly more in the realm of dream pop. It's virtually without the noise that we associate with mary in the junkyard, but when a song is this beautiful, the noise isn't fully missed. That's not to say that "Crash Landing" is noise free. The song has some indie rock feedback lurking in the background, causing an odd sense of foreboding. This latest single is a fantastic new chapter for one of our favorite newer discoveries.
