Free Range - "Growing Away"

Free Range (the musical project of Chicago based artist Sofia Jensen) has released a new song that is brilliant in its simplicity. "Growing Away" isn't rewriting the rules of the singer/songwriter genre. It's pretty standard stuff, although when it's done this perfectly you can't exactly call it standard. "Growing Away" is the kind of song that sucks you in from the first chord. Jensen is just a purely captivating musician, from their vocals to their style of playing. What makes this song so special is that no part truly stands out as exceptional on its own. This is just one of those songs that is so perfectly done that you can't help but be enchanted from beginning to end.

Sofia Jensen says of the new song:

“‘Growing Away’ was written a few months before I ultimately did get sober, and it deals with the realization that I was losing track of who I was. The things I was doing were all controlled by the lack of compassion I had for myself. I felt really disoriented in this haze of memory loss that was becoming a huge part of my life, and I was still at a point where I had no idea how to talk about it with anyone. It was really important for me to write this song I think, because it served as an exercise in acceptance for me for the things I needed to do to finally take care of myself.”
