Spirits Having Fun - "Hold the Phone"

Spirits Having Fun started off in Boston and are now split between New York and Chicago. (We'll try not to hold leaving Boston against them...) Their latest single, "Hold the Phone," is a bizarre mish mash of styles that should not work together. It has some serious 90's guitar crunch. But there is also a twee sensibility that you'd get with a band like Belle and Sebastian. And then they also brings in an almost electronic European indie rock sound that's reminding me a lot of a band like Stereolab. Spirits Having Fun somehow pull this off into a charming and captivating song, which should be impossible.

In a press release, guitarist/vocalist Andrew Clinkman says of the song:

"'Hold The Phone' to me is really emblematic of a shift in how we write our songs. Before, we each would bring in songs as more or less finished objects and teach them to each other when we would get together, but as we've grown, there has been much more long distance sharing of just raw riffs and ideas, which Katie pieces together and makes whole. There's a bit of each of us woven into the DNA of this song."
