Goldpark Cover Wham!

Image
Photo by Kara Sheridan I agree that it's too early for Christmas music, but this is a cover of Wham!'s immortal "Last Christmas," which is my personal favorite Christmas song, but ironically and unironically. Nashville's Goldpark take their shot at the song, and it's a mostly faithful version that updates the sound of "Last Christmas" while keeping the roots of the 80's original. This is pure pop cheese done in a glorious modern indie rock way, and you can tell that Goldpark had a ton of fun with this one. And isn't that all we truly want with a Christmas song? Goldpark says of the song: "' Last Christmas' was one of the first songs that came to our minds when thinking about Christmas songs that we would like to cover.  It strikes this interesting balance of being warm and bringing a smile to your face while also giving you a sense of sorrow. Those two things together tend to make a great Christmas song." You can listen to G...

Eli Paperboy Reed Covers Wham

Image
It's December, so you know that if a band is covering Wham, they're covering "Last Christmas." Eli Paperboy Reed is the latest artist to take on one of the greatest Christmas songs of all time, if not one of the greatest songs of all time. His rendition of "Last Christmas" is obviously going to be a neo-soul version. It's insanely fun and upbeat, and is exactly what we want from any cover, but especially a Christmas cover song, and really especially this one. Plus, covers don't count towards Whamageddon, so you run no risks by listening to this one. You can listen to Eli Paperboy Reed's version of "Last Christmas" below. The song is available as a single via Bandcamp with an original Christmas song, "Merry Christmas to Me." It's also a pretty great song, but there's no way we're going to pass up highlighting a cover of "Last Christmas." For more on Eli Paperboy Reed, check out his website . Last Christmas...

Molly Burch (featuring Kate Berlant and John Early) Covers Wham!

Image
Photo via Facebook Maybe it's the upcoming film of the same name, or maybe people are just discovering that it is in fact the greatest song ever recorded, but w e're barely in November and we're already on our second cover of "Last Christmas."  This one is from Molly Burch's upcoming Christmas album, and for her version she's enlisted comedians Kate Berlant and John Early to help her out. Having comedians on a song shows that Burch is having a bit of fun on her cover of the Wham! holiday classic, which is possibly the best way to perform this one. This is one of the best of the many covers of "Last Christmas" I've heard, most likely because you can tell how much fun they're having with it. You can listen to Molly Burch's version of "Last Christmas" below. The Molly Burch Christmas Album will be out November 15. You can pre-order a copy here . Lucy Dacus Covers Wham!

Personally, I think it's far too early to post about Christmas music, but when it's Lucy Dacus covering Wham!'s "Last Christmas" (which I think we can all agree might be the greatest song ever recorded), I have no other choice but to post about it. This is the final entry into Dacus's holiday singles series, and it's sure to be a classic. While I may not have agreed with her choice to cover "In the Air Tonight" for Halloween, her Christmas choice of "Last Christmas" couldn't have been better. In a press release, Dacus says"  “I don’t really like Christmas. In the studio, we listened to the original of ‘Last Christmas’ and didn’t talk about an arrangement. I just told everyone to play it angry. This is what happened first take. It actually came out pretty fun, maybe a tad psychotic.” I don't know if I'd call it psychotic, but it's a much faster version of the original, stopping just barely short of punk. Well, ma...
