"I'll Change for You" sounds more like a jazz standard than an indie rock or singer-songwriter release. The song is enchanting and captivates the listener more and more as it goes on. It's also a fantastic showcase for Mitski's vocal abilities. It sounds like a song that could have been released nearly a century ago while still sounding fully modern. The album is something of a concept album about "... a reclusive woman in an unkempt house." The latest single, "Where's My Phone?," is a huge, epic song playing in the worlds of rock and pop. It's ridiculously catchy, and is almost demanding the listener to start pogoing. Mitski is crooning the track that would make singers of the 50's and 60's jealous, and the song keeps the guitars just noisy enough to not fall too far into the realm of pop music. "Where's My Phone?" is an incredibly creative track that is much more complex than your typical rock or pop song. If you're still unsure about jumping on the Mitski bandwagon, now is a perfect time. Artist : Brimheim Album : can't hate myself into a different shape Quick Thoughts : Brimheim came as a surprise to me this week. It's an interesting listen rhhat leans in fairly hard into the lower-fi alt-rock territory, but then you get songs like the title track or "hey amanda" and you realize quickly how special this is. On a whole, I really enjoyed this listen, and I'm looking forward to getting back to it. Songs of Note : "can't hate myself into a different shape," "baleen feeder," "hey amanda," "hurting me for fun" Artist : Thank Album : Thoughtless Cruelty Quick Thoughts : In some ways, this is sort of a loud, brash Idles. It's angsty and angry (post?) punk music and I found myself loving it over and over through its entire runtime. Is summer over yet? Album of the Week : Artist : Still Corners Album : Slow Air Quick Description : Dark, synthy, poppy goodness. Why You Should Listen : This album sounds so unique and out of nowhere... Overall Thoughts : I heard "Black Lagoon" early on and fell in love with it, so the fact that we get an album is awesome. It more than exceeded my expectations: it's a dark album without feeling brooding, it has an atmosphere all its own. I'm shocked at how great this ended up being, and I think people who have an affinity for gothy-ish stuff from the 1980s will find a lot to like here. Recommendation : Easily my favorite this week. Overall Thoughts : Mitski was a Discover Weekly find for me some time ago, so this new album hit my radar immediately and it was as good as advertised. A good mix of alt-rock and grunge-style instrumentation with solid vocals and lyrics, it's a pretty great package on a whole and is something readers here should love.
