"Island of One" is awash in the lush, gorgeous wall of noise you associate with any shoegaze or dream pop artist. For this one, they've added in some Latin elements to the song, making it upbeat and increasingly catchy. This latest song is especially fun and beautiful, with even the noisier elements carrying much of the beauty of the song. It's also a little more trippy than we normally hear from MB3. Overall, "Island of One" is a fantastic song that will have you going back for more, partly because it's great and partly since more is revealed within the song after repeated listens. As soon as the band announced an October 12 show at The Sinclair in Cambridge, MA, I instantly made plans to attend. Once it was announced that this would most likely be their final US tour, I knew nothing, not even a deluge from a nor'easter, would stop me. Taking the stage in a two guitars, one bass, and programmed drums formation, Miki Berenyi Trio played mostly from the just released Tripla. Live their songs had a slightly adjusted sound, with most alternating between dream pop and shoegaze, and others creating an almost dance party friendly version of shoegaze. Last year, Miki Berenyi Trio toured with Lol Tolhurst x Budgie. They had such a good time that they've decided to play some dates together this year, only with Tolhurst's son Gray stepping in since Budgie couldn't make it. They've also released a new single under the name Miki Berenyi Trio x Lol Tolhurst x Gray. "Stranger" is exactly what we want to hear from these alt-rock legends. You have the psychedelic shoegaze/dream pop associated with Berenyi's musical projects along with keyboards that sound like vintage Cure songs. This is a collaboration between members of Lush and The Cure, and it certainly does not disappoint. If anything, "Stranger" exceeds are already high expectations. "Kinch" is about that happy and sad feeling you get when you see photos of loved ones who have passed away. In Berenyi's case, it's about her father and Chris Acland, Lush's drummer who died in 1996. Musically, the song is equal parts alt-rock (including shoegaze) mixed with a chilled out electronic sound. It almost sounds like a cross between classic shoegaze bands of the 90's with some trip hop elements. It's a beautiful and engaging new song that will suck you in with its more hypnotic sounds.  Miki Berenyi says of her band's latest single: “The lyrics are inspired by love and loss, and how those people never leave you, and how it makes you think about the nature of love.” You can watch the video for "Kinch" below. "Big I Am" is reminding me of that period in the 90's when rave and electronic music culture started invading alt-rock. It has a hypnotic sound and dances right in the middle of being either electronic or alt-rock. It's reminding me a lot of a mix between The Stone Roses' "Fools Gold" and Hotwired era Soup Dragons... just a little more electronic. Now she's back with the Miki Berenyi Trio, which also features Kevin "Moose" McKillop on guitar and Oliver Cherer on bass. They've released a brand new single, and if you enjoyed her previous bands, you're going to be into "Vertigo." This feels like a natural extension of Lush. It has that dreamy, shoegaze quality along with the pop side of Britpop. It's all just toned down a bit, but aren't we all. There's a bit of a trip hop sound going on here, but just slightly.
