Photo by The Company Film The press release for the latest single from The Concrete Boys refers to "Boing" as "baby shark for meth heads," and we can't exactly argue that point. The Denmark metapunk band (that includes three members of Powersolo) might have one of the catchiest songs on their hands with this one. There is kind of a children's song element to the track, especially with the repeated chorus of "Boing, boing, boing, boing, boing" repeated many times. This one is a ridiculous amount of fun by design. Even before the lyrics kick in, the guitars are going to have you completely sucked in with how catchy they are. "Boing" is a surprising winner of a song that is guaranteed to be crammed into your skull for at least a week. You can listen to "Boing" below. Photo by The Company Film Even if I had never heard of The Concrete Boys and didn't know that three members also play in Powersolo, their new single would have won me over with the title. "Stop Flattening the Baby" is an unhinged garage rock meets punk (or "metapunk, as The Concrete Boys" call it) single that trods along at a medium pace. It's loud, it's noisy, and it's undeniably groovy. This reminds me of a more straight up garage rock version of Butthole Surfers or Ween, even if the title is reminiscent of Happy Flowers. I can't imagine "Stop Flattening the Baby" is going to appeal to everyone, but if you like this, it's going to burrow itself deep into your brain until you become a rabid fan of The Concrete Boys. Their latest single, "Uh Huh Yeah," is a bizarre but instantly gripping song that has few lyrics other than the song's title repeated. It's just a fun song that combines garage punk and psychedelia with some late 90's artists that combined dance music with rock. I'm getting some odd Dandy Warhols vibes from "Uh Huh Yeah," especially from Dandys Rule OK. The other band that "Uh Huh Yeah" reminds me of is PowerSolo, which makes sense since it turns out that three members of The Concrete Boys are also in that band. To make the song even more appealing, it's introduced by German wrestling commentator Carsten Schaefer. This is as much fun as a song can possibly get. Powersolo is a rock and roll outfit out of Denmark I discovered opening for Heavy Trash way back in 2005. The project of Kim "Railthin" Kix just released a new single that isn't quite like what I expected. "She's a Trucker" features vocals by Phoebe Killdeer and is more of a freak out ballad than the normal high octane rock and roll we're used to from Powersolo. The new single is more along the lines of The Stooges' weirdo jam kind of songs, if they were more R&B inspired and were trying for a single and not just album filler. If anything, "She's a Trucker" is like a cross between 60's Stooges and Beck's "Debra." You can listen to "She's a Trucker" below.
