The artist has a new single out, "Head Down," that's a slice of newfangled indie rock that's as based in pop as it is rock. It's a beautiful song with just enough of an edge to it to keep it from being pure pop. To me it sounds like late 90's Juliana Hatfield meets Blondshell. Plus, there's something summery about the song, and we could use that up here in the Northeast for this seemingly never ending winter. lucky break's vocals mesh with the music in "Head Down" in a way that perfectly complement each other. Photo by Izzie Austin Hailing from Melbourne, RVG have released a post punk song that isn't quite like what modern post punk typically sounds like. "Squid" is much more like a standard rock song than you would normally associate with the genre, and while many other Australian bands reach back to the 1990's, RVG go back further to the 1980's. "Squid" sound more like bands like Echo & The Bunnymen, The Cult, or Midnight Oil. There is even a little bit of Throwing Muses in the guitar. It feels like it's been ages since we've had any new music from 50 Foot Wave, Kristin Hersh's musical project for sounds that are "... too weird or wild for Throwing Muses." There have only been three EPs since 2004 with the last one being released in 2016, so that feeling is justified. Luckily for the universe as a whole, we now have a new song from the band! As soon as "Staring Into the Sun" starts with a rumble of feedback, you know you're in good hands. This song is just loud. It's a heavy, killer indie/alt-rock song with a wall of fuzz riding behind it the entire time. "Staring Into the Sun" is a slow burn of a song, proving that loud and fast aren't always chained together. Photo from Facebook The legendary Throwing Muses keep getting more and more intriguing as time goes on. Their latest single, "Frosting," is perfect for long term fans of the Rhode Island natives. It has the same intensity that classic Throwing Muses has, albeit a little more laid back than they were thirty years ago. It's nearly impossible to keep your sound this intense while being more laid back, but the Muses somehow pull it off. Plus, the slight sound of discordant noise lingering behind the entire track is some of the grooviest noise you would have ever thought possible.  You can watch the video for "Frosting" below. Any day we can bring you new music from the legendary Throwing Muses is a good day. This September they are all set to release their first album since 2013, and right now we can check out "Bo Diddley Bridge." This new song keeps intact everything we want in a Throwing Muses song. It's both dissonant and gorgeous, repelling some people while drawing others in. If you love Throwing Muses, you're going to love this. One new element is an almost funky song. "Bo Diddley Bridge" grooves much more than we've grown used to in Throwing Muses's nearly forty year history.  You can watch the video for "Bo Diddley Bridge" below. Even though we brought you a new track from Kristin Hersh's upcoming solo album a short time ago, "Breathe In" was still in the demo stages making "No Shade in Shadow" the first official single. It's not quite what we would have expected. Hersh's solo work usually fits more into the singer/songwriter category, and her noisier and more experimental work is taken on by Throwing Muses of 50 Foot Wave. "No Shade in Shadow" isn't as rock as Throwing Muses or as aggressive as 50 Foot Wave, but it's certainly not a standard singer/songwriter track. It's soaked in reverb and is one of Hersh's more dissonant tracks in recent memory. At the point Hersh is in her career, most of her contemporaries are on the nostalgia circuit and maybe churn out a dull, predictable record every few years. It's so refreshing to have an artist that continues to push herself with every release. You can listen to "No Shade in Shadow" below....

Any time we can bring you new music from one of Kristin Hersh's projects is an exciting time for us all. With an album upcoming later this year, Hersh has released a new single off it, "Breathe In." One thing we know from "Breathe In" is that the new album won't be one of her quiet acoustic releases. The track is dripping with what sounds like a tremelo effect on the guitar. When it doesn't have the effect, the guitar has a distinctly crunchy feel, and just about every element of the song, including Hersh's voice, has it's turn to distort. The song has a hypnotic and not entirely pleasant feel, although it's not entirely unpleasant, either.  You can listen to a rough mix of "Breathe In" below. The song features Fred Abong of Throwing Muses on bass and Wyatt True (aka Hersh's son) on drums. I've always loved Evan Dando's single true solo album Baby I'm Bored. (I'm not counting Live at the Brattle Theater since it's more of a live album, although it might be the best thing Dando has ever released.) I don't really remember it being considered a rousing success, especially since he went back to recording under the name The Lemonheads since then. But, it's beloved by enough people to warrant a two disc vinyl reissue for Record Store Day, with the second disc being filled with unreleased tracks and b-sides. Right now you can hear two songs from the reissue: An alternate version of "Shots is Fired" that features Liv Tyler on vocals and another alternate version, this time of "Rancho Santa Fe." Neither one is drastically different from the album versions. "Shots is Fired" is a bit more raw, and features a clanging guitar that isn't in the album version, and obviously Liv Tyler. "Rancho Sata Fe" feels a lit...

While we wait impatiently for the first sounds to emerge from the next Lemonheads album featuring Evan Dando, Ben Deily, and Juliana Hatfield (aka the LH-Punk All-Stars) and produced by Ryan Adams, we can tide ourselves over with this brand new video for the Lick classic "A Circle of One." According to Ben Deily's Facebook page, this is the first of multiple videos to commemorate the reissue of the first three Lemonheads albums on Fire Records.  In the video for "A Circle of One," you get to see footage of the band from '86-'89, mostly clowning around at home with friends. The "Art Truck" from the Creator  tour is also featured, as well as a cameo from Husker Du's Grant Hart. Keep an eye out for more videos.
