If It's Too Loud...

Photo by Daniel Topete Of all of the singles from Fake Fruit's upcoming album, "Gotta Meet You" sounds the most traditionally post-punk. The song is a frantic burst of discordant noise all squished together to make a mind melting mish mash. It's a bonkers song, made all the more so by Hannah "Ham" D'Amato singing as if she's in a normal rock or pop song. The whole shebang sounds like DEVO jamming with James Chance. This is sure to be one of those songs to get your co-workers to ask "What the hell are you listening to?" before turning up their bro country. But, for those of us that like this sort of thing, "Gotta Meet You" is a pure delight. You can listen to "Gotta Meet You" below. "Má s O Menos" is an absolute buzzsaw of a song that combines post-punk with 90's alt-rock. The guitars are just driven straight at you with a disjointed sound, and singer Hannah "Ham" D'Amato powers the song into your skull with her vocals. It's shout and spoken word heavy punk rock that is going to make you want to dance, pogo, and mosh all at once. It's hard to make a song as aggressive as "M ás O Menos" this fun and enjoyable, but most bands aren't Fake Fruit. You can watch the video for "Más O Menos" below. Photo by Daniel Topete Oakland's Fake Fruit are back with a new single that helps redefine what post punk can be. "Cause of Death" starts of as a laid back post punk song that is almost ramblin'. It switches over to a louder, but still laid back alt-rock song with jangly and jerky guitars. The song is quite noisy and dissonant, but in a pleasant way. It's a fun song even though it doesn't have that dance friendly feel some music in the genre has. Despite being four minutes long, "Cause of Death" is an absolute epic song with more tempo and sonic changes than we can count.  Hannah "Ham" D'Amato says of her band's latest single: “I wrote the lyrics for this song when I felt so indecisive that I imagined someone performing an autopsy on me and declaring my cause of death to be indecision." "Mucho Mistrust" has this warped guitar noise that is reminiscent of classic post-punk from bands like Gang of Four. It also has a little bit of the dance friendly style that you get from Bodega. But singer Hannah "Ham" D'Amato doesn't sing like she's fronting a post-punk band. "Mucho Mistrust" sees her crooning like Chrissie Hynde on The Pretenders' more Americana based songs. Plus, Fake Fruit let some pop hooks poke their heads into the song just a tiny bit. It's a mash up of sounds that helps create something fresh and lets the genre mutate into the future.
